‘This Is Sing-Out' film showcases 30 years of community giving
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — One Rochester non-profit's history is coming to the big screen next week. 'This is Sing-Out' tells the 30-year story of the organization of the same name.
Director Frank Vella is one of thousands who have been a member of Sing-Out.
'The whole ethos of why I wanted to make the film is, I was very inspired by these adults,' Vella told News 8. 'It's been this really great, rich piece of like Rochester history for years.
The organization was founded in the 1970s by Lisa Romack. She started it after her friend Tim passed away with the concept of putting on a musical revue together to raise money for children's charities.
'It ran for two years in the 70s, and he basically, while in hospice, was telling her that those were really the best memories of my life,' Vella said.
So, Romack brought it back. Initially just for one year in Tim's honor.
''We should do it again. We should do it again,'' Vella quoted Romach saying. 'And it kind of grew. They switched it to where, in the beginning, it was all the adults that were in the original show, and it kind of transformed it to, 'Well, let's just make it high school kids and make it all about high school kids.''
Decades of history, decades of giving back to the community — mixed with the history of thousands of Sing-Out members, past and present — including Vella — he showcases it all through film… with a little help.
'The Town of East Rochester had filmed all 30 years,' Vella said. 'So I was able to go in, and they were able to give me all this footage. I really wanted to focus on the adults involved in Sing-Out, because these guys do so much work for the community, and they don't get the credit. They always keep it about the kids.'
That theme of giving back: incorporated behind the scenes as well.
'Every penny we make from this film is going to go back to the Sing-Out organization,' Vella said. 'It played into the theme of the film. It's all about giving back. I wanted to make sure we were doing that on our end as well.'

I wouldn't say I've ever been particularly claustrophobic, but after watching Netflix's first trailer for the German thriller 'Brick,' I can definitely feel the nightmare of confinement setting in. The premise is simple but intriguing: a couple wakes up to find their apartment building completely encased by an impenetrable brick wall that appeared overnight. The plot immediately reminded me of 'The Platform' and '10 Cloverfield Lane,' which are two of my favorite claustrophobic thrillers. So, it's no surprise this one went straight onto my summer watchlist. 'Brick' will land on Netflix on July 10, 2025, and judging by the first trailer, it looks like a mystery thriller viewers will devour (and maybe come to fear enclosed spaces a little more). The trailer opens with Olivia (Ruby O. Fee) telling her partner, Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer), that she's leaving him and not coming back. But as she tries to walk out of the apartment, she's met with a brick wall. Confused, they soon realize their entire building is surrounded by this strange structure. Like anyone would, they start kicking and throwing themselves against it, but it doesn't budge. The water doesn't work, there's no cell reception and even drilling through the brick gets them nowhere. Instead, they manage to break through a plastered wall and find their neighbor on the other side just as panicked as they are. You can feel the tension start to rise as Tim, Olivia, and the rest of the building's residents try to figure out what's happening and how to escape. But as the fear and claustrophobia set in, it's clear the real danger might be what's happening inside, not just outside. The trailer might reveal a bit more than it should, so the movie will need to pull off a truly unexpected twist to keep the story engaging and leave a lasting impact. Along with the trailer and release date, Netflix's synopsis reads: 'Tim and Olivia awake trapped in their apartment behind an impenetrable, futuristic wall which has materialized overnight … and they are not alone. The entire building and its residents seem to be enclosed. 'What happened? Who built that wall and why? Without any chance of outside help, they must band together to find a way out. Can they solve the mystery of the wall in time — and survive?' Nearly four years after starring together in 'Army of Thieves' (the prequel to 'Army of the Dead'), real-life couple Matthias Schweighöfer and Ruby O. Fee reunite for another Netflix project with 'Brick,' this time in a much darker, more suspenseful setting. 'Brick' is directed by Philip Koch and features a strong ensemble cast alongside Fee and Schweighöfer, including Frederick Lau, Salber Lee Williams, Murathan Muslu, Axel Werner, Sira-Anna Faal, and Alexander Beyer. Koch has a real knack for creating tense, atmospheric stories that feel just a little off-kilter in the best way, like he did with 'Tribes of Europa.' With 'Brick,' he seems to be bringing that same energy, turning a simple, contained setting into something eerie and unpredictable. There's a good chance this won't just be a survival thriller, as it looks to explore how people unravel under pressure. Given his background in sci-fi and psychological thrillers, Koch knows how to make familiar spaces feel strange and claustrophobic. If this new movie leans into that, it could end up being something really memorable. This is very much a claustrophobic thriller and one that will probably have you guessing until the very end. The trailer suggests a story that leans heavily into psychological pressure, exploring what happens to people when their world suddenly shrinks and the rules no longer make sense. Plus, it's perfect for anyone who enjoys a good single-location thriller. Visually, though, it actually looks pretty sharp and stylized, and I'm curious to see how it balances dread and mystery in the right way. Thankfully, we don't have long to wait to see the mystery unfold. If you're drawn to stories that thrive on slow-building tension, this one looks like it'll have you hooked from the first minute. 'Survivor' winner Luciano Plazibat reacts to the gays flooding his DMs
Between winning Survivor Croatia and going viral with a video of himself singing and dancing to "Abracadabra" by Lady Gaga, this has been a very special Pride Month for Luciano Plazibat. Now, the professional dancer and reality TV heartthrob is spilling some tea about his run on the show, his connection with Lady Gaga, and the response he's been getting from the gays since that viral video. "I have to admit that being on Survivor Croatia was never on my wish list, let alone imagining that I could win," Plazibat tells Out. "I always thought Survivor was more for the 'manly men,' for lack of a better word. Guys who excel at sports. And I'm a dancer. This could also be my upbringing talking, but [I thought] a dancer is for Dancing With the Stars, and athletic men go to Survivor." He adds, "I found that being a dancer definitely helped in the physical challenges on the show, so I changed my own mind and proved to myself that I'm capable of different things — even if I didn't necessarily plan for them. Survivor is hard; it was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. But after being on the show, I feel that not much else will be harder than that." Though Plazibat is still recovering from competing on (and winning) Survivor Croatia, the 26-year-old spent the weekend celebrating Zagreb Pride, has his 27th birthday coming up in a week — Monday, June 23 — and wants to attend Tomorrowland this year. "We're the best of friends, but she doesn't know it yet," Plazibat jokes when asked about Mother Monster. "Just kidding!" In reality, the Survivor winner was 10 years old when he first saw Gaga "coming out of that pool in the 'Poker Face' music video," adding: "I thought to myself, 'I need to have that mask, but also those bangs.' And the rest is history; I was a fan ever since." Plazibat says that being a Gaga fan has "kept me going as a dancer" over the years. "I'm still working towards one day performing [with her] and being on stage myself," he explains. "Name any one of her songs and I can dance it out right now." And yet, that creative connection with Gaga actually took an even more personal turn while Plazibat competed on Survivor Croatia. "In week two, some of the contestants made fun of me for being her fan. They even mentioned it as one of the reasons why I should be kicked out… half-jokingly, probably," he recalls. "But, to me, it became like a symbol of staying on Survivor. The longer I stayed, the more I would sing and dance." Plazibat's also proud to reveal that loving Lady Gaga is a family affair. "After two months of being on the show, we received video messages from our families, and my father quoted Lady Gaga in his video message," the Survivor Croatia star notes. "He wanted to motivate me, and send his support, and he knew exactly what to do." The Croatian series — airing on Nova TV since 2022 — shared that video on its official Instagram page, which took Plazibat by surprise. "That video was actually filmed before my final interview on the TV studio. We were waiting for the interview to start," he explains. "Me being me, I felt like the room needed some entertainment; a little bit of 'Abracadabra.'" As far as Plazibat knew, he was just trying to entertain himself and the production crew while the equipment was set up for his final interview. Though he was mic'd and knew the cameras were on, he didn't realize that the footage of him singing and dancing "Abracadabra" before his final interview would ever be used. "It was a surprise to me to when the channel decided to post that," he says, adding that he also didn't expect that the video would go so viral. "I was very surprised, but also very happy, that the Little Monster community picked up on it." "Picked up on it" is an understatement: The video has gotten millions of views, and has reached way more people than just Little Monsters. The official Instagram page for Survivor Croatia first shared Plazibat's "Abracadabra" video on Saturday, May 24. Overall, the video has already reached 1.2 million views. On Wednesday, May 28 — just four days later — Plazibat's video was re-shared on X/Twitter and got a new wave of very thirsty (and very queer!) responses. "A contestant on Survivor sang Abracadabra," X/Twitter user @nichblink wrote along with the video, which can be seen below. This clip alone has reached 4.8 million views as of this writing — including 41,000 likes, 8,000 bookmarks, and 3,300 re-shares. Or, in this case, a lot of flirting in the DMs." Wildest response to the video so far? "A certain adult movie actor re-posted my video on his story and wrote, 'Marry me.' And that's nice, right? Because usually it's the other way around." And, if anyone's curious, Plazibat confirms during this Out interview that he is indeed gay and single. Even when facing no-so-positive reactions to the viral video, Plazibat remains unbothered — and even friendly. "I figured out why Luciano Plazibat is irritating to me, and the sad truth is because the guy is actually happy, and it radiates from him. I'm just jealous and projecting," X user @trjkvcnkl wrote on Friday, May 30. Plazibat reacted to that X post, writing: "Hahahahaha, Nikola, let's grab some coffee." So, what's next for the Survivor Croatia winner? "Right now I'm taking some time off for the summer," he says. "I have some offers and plans for future projects in the fall, but nothing confirmed yet." "But, whatever I do, I'll see to it that it's always something creative and entertaining for me and for others. Everyone needs a little bit of 'Abracadabra' right now," Plazibat says. Sack The DJ: Apple launches its new feature that can mix tracks using AI

Apple has introduced a new feature to its iOS26 operating system that blends and mixes tracks together using AI. It's called AutoMix and allows users to create 'unique transitions' between tracks, in the same manner of the DJ. Of course, Spotify users have been able to crossfade between songs for some time. What's different with this new Apple feature is that it takes it a step further to allow "time stretching and beat matching to deliver continuous playback and an even more seamless listening experience." There are other upgrades too. Also added is Lyrics Translation, which lets users understand the meaning of their favourite songs, and Lyrics Pronunciation, which enables users to sing along when lyrics are in another language. So if you end up – for some reason - at a K Pop karaoke session, you'll no longer be scratching your head at how you're supposed to render the songs. According to Apple, the AI machine learning apparently ensures 'the emotion, cultural context, and lyrical intent are fully preserved.' Meanwhile there's Sing, which allows users to convert the iPhone into a handheld microphone. Used in tandem with for Apple TV, it amplifies your voice you could can belt out your favourite songs with friends. With real-time lyrics and visual effects that light up the screen, Sing reaches a 'new level of fun' according to the people at Apple.
