Perry Police arrest woman for allowing her child to eat cannabis brownie
PERRY, N.Y. (WROC) – A Perry man was arrested after officers with the Perry Police Department received reports of a domestic incident in Perry on Covington Street last month. Officers say the incident took place during a party between 44-year-old Bobbie Ellis, 444, a man, and a child the two have in common. During the investigation, officers say Ellis provided and allowed her child, who's a minor, to consume a cannabis brownie and that Ellis was growing her own cannabis and 'had more plants than what is allowed by New York State Law governing the private ownership, cultivating, and harvesting of cannabis for private consumption.' Officers say when Ellis arrived to Perry Village Court for another matter on June 10, she was taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child for providing and allowing her child to consume a cannabis brownie. Officers also charged Ellis with cultivating more than six mature cannabis plants and six immature cannabis plants for a total of 12 plants. While investigating officers learned Ellis was in possession of 21 immature cannabis plants which were seized and disposed of by the Perry Police Department. Ellis was processed by Perry Police and returned to Perry Village Court where she was arraigned and released on her own recognizance. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘This Is Sing-Out' film showcases 30 years of community giving
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — One Rochester non-profit's history is coming to the big screen next week. 'This is Sing-Out' tells the 30-year story of the organization of the same name. Director Frank Vella is one of thousands who have been a member of Sing-Out. 'The whole ethos of why I wanted to make the film is, I was very inspired by these adults,' Vella told News 8. 'It's been this really great, rich piece of like Rochester history for years. The organization was founded in the 1970s by Lisa Romack. She started it after her friend Tim passed away with the concept of putting on a musical revue together to raise money for children's charities. 'It ran for two years in the 70s, and he basically, while in hospice, was telling her that those were really the best memories of my life,' Vella said. So, Romack brought it back. Initially just for one year in Tim's honor. ''We should do it again. We should do it again,'' Vella quoted Romach saying. 'And it kind of grew. They switched it to where, in the beginning, it was all the adults that were in the original show, and it kind of transformed it to, 'Well, let's just make it high school kids and make it all about high school kids.'' Decades of history, decades of giving back to the community — mixed with the history of thousands of Sing-Out members, past and present — including Vella — he showcases it all through film… with a little help. 'The Town of East Rochester had filmed all 30 years,' Vella said. 'So I was able to go in, and they were able to give me all this footage. I really wanted to focus on the adults involved in Sing-Out, because these guys do so much work for the community, and they don't get the credit. They always keep it about the kids.' That theme of giving back: incorporated behind the scenes as well. 'Every penny we make from this film is going to go back to the Sing-Out organization,' Vella said. 'It played into the theme of the film. It's all about giving back. I wanted to make sure we were doing that on our end as well.' 'This is Sing-Out' premieres on Prime Video June 17. Now open: Roc Star Academy South in Geneseo
GENESEO, N.Y. (WROC) — Now open in Geneseo: Roc Star Academy South. The new academy is at 11 Franklin Street, right by SUNY Geneseo. Rochester native and member of the band Daughtry, Elvio Fernandes, founded the music academy about 15 years ago as a summer camp. Roc Star Academy South will work just like the Rochester location: school-age kids can enroll, learn from some of the best local musicians in one-on-one settings, form their own band, and get real experience playing out at clubs and festivals. Fernandes said there is no cap on the number of students they will be admitting to Roc Star Academy South, and teased a possible partnership with the neighboring SUNY Geneseo. 'This Is Sing-Out' film showcases 30 years of community giving Fernandes says he got his musical start in Geneseo, and here, he can show a whole new generation of musicians the ropes, like Bianca Lewey. 'I got to join a band… Nothing has changed my life more,' she said. 'I've had the opportunity to perform in front of thousands of people, without Roc Star Academy, I would have never ever gotten the chance… I would have never gotten to explore songwriting, and explore the genres I sing, and open my horizons to so much new stuff.' 'Just seeing the look on that kid's face who came in as a shy kid and leaves with this much more confidence, that's the addiction,' Fernandes said. 'I want every kid who doesn't feel like they're cool… I want to show you how cool you are.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
