Mother mourns son, prays for unconscious husband after hit-and-run tragedy

RANTAU PANJANG: A woman who lost her three-year-old son in a hit-and-run crash is now facing the possibility of losing her husband, who remains unconscious in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Nur Zarini Mokhtar, 39, said her husband, Mohd Fakhrazi Mat Zain, 43, has yet to regain consciousness after suffering severe head injuries in the same incident that claimed the life of Muhammad Uwais, their youngest child.
"I still miss my late son and I constantly worry about my husband, who is now being treated in the ICU at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZII) in Kota Baru," she said when met at their home in Kampung Baroh Pial yesterday.
She said she has lost her main source of support and now relies on her eldest son, Mohd Hamdan Mohd Fakhrazi, 18, who recently began working at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
"Right now, I'm managing daily life with my second child, Asma'a Mohd Fakhrazi, 15, who is still in school. We live off the donations of visitors and help from relatives and close family members.
"We still have food to eat, but our priority is my husband who is fighting for his life due to severe head injuries. He also suffers from a heart condition," she said.
Adding to her heartbreak, she said her husband has not yet been told that their youngest child has died. Doctors have advised her to keep the news from him until his condition stabilises.
"My husband was very close to our youngest son. We waited over 10 years to have Muhammad Uwais. I have accepted what happened, though it is painful to face the reality that he is gone in such a way," she added.
Nur Zarini said she has been travelling back and forth to the hospital with the help of relatives, as she does not drive.
"For the past two weeks, I've had to rely on relatives for transport to visit my husband in hospital. My daughter stays home alone and still has to attend school.
"My biggest hope is that my husband regains consciousness. I'm ready to care for him until he recovers, so that we can try to live a normal life again, even without our beloved son's presence," she said.
Nur Zarini admitted she is unsure about what the future holds.
"To be honest, I'm at a loss about what comes next. But for now, I just want to focus on my husband. If possible, I plan to find a job to support our family and will apply for assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM)," she said.
The crash occurred on May 15 in Kampung Baroh Pial when Mohd Fakhrazi, their son Muhammad Uwais, and two young relatives — a niece and a nephew — were riding a motorcycle and were struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident.
A 54-year-old man suspected to be the driver of the Proton Persona involved in the crash was arrested on the same day.
Pasir Mas police said the suspect tested negative for drugs and will be brought to court for a remand application.

Social Welfare Department seeks next-of-kin of abandoned baby

SUNGAI PETANI: The Social Welfare Department is seeking the mother or relatives of a baby girl abandoned in a wooden shed in Taman Semarak in March. Kuala Muda district child protector Nurul Dalila Nasuha Othman said the infant was discovered on March 9 in Taman Semarak with her umbilical cord still intact and is believed to have been recently born. "The baby was left without any form of identification. At the time she was found, she was in good health, had black hair, and showed no signs of serious medical complications," she said in a statement today. The baby was taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for a medical check-up and is now under temporary care at a children's home in accordance with Section 25(2) of the Child Act 2001 (Amendment 2016). She urged the biological mother or any relatives to assist in the welfare process by contacting the Kuala Muda District Social Welfare Office's Child Protector at 04-4204900 or by visiting the office directly.

According to Hope Place, Chai was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 and had to quit her job as a cashier at a supermarket, losing her stable income. 'She is now very weak and can barely walk by herself — she depends solely on her family,' it said. Chai told Hope Place: 'I feel so frustrated and helpless but I want to be better.' The NGO said Chai lives with her mother and 29-year-old brother, Yeen, in Matang, adding that the brother had quit his job to take care of his sister. 'Her mother, 63, has leg problems and uses a walking cane. However, she still does all the household chores and cooks for her children,' it added. It is understood that Chai is receiving RM200 monthly from the state Social Welfare Department, but is not enough to get by. Serious attention to mental health needed, says minister

Nancy delivers some points during the press conference. — Penerangan photo KUCHING (June 15): Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Nancy Shukri has stressed the need for a comprehensive and sustained approach to addressing mental health issues, particularly among teenagers, through multi-agency cooperation and community-based strategies. She referred to the recent tragic case in Melaka involving a teenage boy who killed his mother due to stress and emotional distress. Nancy said such cases reflected the urgent need to raise awareness, provide support and ensure early intervention for individuals facing mental health struggles. 'The teenager was reportedly under pressure and stressed due to academic pressure. 'While in custody, he showed good behaviour, but remains preoccupied with thoughts of his younger brother, who was also injured. This reflects the heavy mental burden he is carrying,' she told a press conference held in conjunction with the Family Captain Camp at Damai Escape Park in Santubong near here today. She added that the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and the police had extended appropriate care and attention to the teen, but the incident should serve as a lesson that mental health support and treatment must be strengthened. Nancy also highlighted the importance of expanding intervention programmes such as the One-Stop Social Support Centre (PSSS) and mobile services using community counter buses to reach those in need of psychosocial support. 'We bring the mobile counter buses into communities to identify those who may not even realise they are facing mental health issues. Some only become aware they need help after going through interactive sessions like drawing activities or brief counselling,' she said. She urged the public not to feel ashamed about seeking help and encouraged the cultivation of friendships and open conversations with trusted individuals. 'Sometimes, people experiencing distress don't even realise they need help. 'That's why it is important to provide platforms and safe spaces for them to express themselves, including through NGOs and community support groups,' she added. She noted that in today's challenging modern world, fathers also face tremendous pressure but often bottled up their emotions without expressing them. 'The 2024 Father's Day Survey revealed that nine out of 10 fathers admit that being a father today is far more challenging than in the past. 'A father's role is not only in the home but also within the community. They must be listeners, protectors, and guides, especially in today's digital world,' she said. Nancy also underscored the importance of parenting modules such as PEKA (Empowered Parenting) and KASIH Digital Parenting, which aim to build communication skills, emotional management, and cyber safety awareness among parents. Among the activities that stood out at the camp were interactive sessions titled 'Know Your Father, Know Your Child' and 'KASIH Family Exploration', which provided meaningful bonding opportunities for fathers and their children. Nancy also officiated the symbolic launch of the National Father's Day 2025 Kick-Off Celebration at the event. community mental health nancy shukri youth
