Mother mourns son, prays for unconscious husband after hit-and-run tragedy
RANTAU PANJANG: A woman who lost her three-year-old son in a hit-and-run crash is now facing the possibility of losing her husband, who remains unconscious in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Nur Zarini Mokhtar, 39, said her husband, Mohd Fakhrazi Mat Zain, 43, has yet to regain consciousness after suffering severe head injuries in the same incident that claimed the life of Muhammad Uwais, their youngest child.
"I still miss my late son and I constantly worry about my husband, who is now being treated in the ICU at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZII) in Kota Baru," she said when met at their home in Kampung Baroh Pial yesterday.
She said she has lost her main source of support and now relies on her eldest son, Mohd Hamdan Mohd Fakhrazi, 18, who recently began working at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
"Right now, I'm managing daily life with my second child, Asma'a Mohd Fakhrazi, 15, who is still in school. We live off the donations of visitors and help from relatives and close family members.
"We still have food to eat, but our priority is my husband who is fighting for his life due to severe head injuries. He also suffers from a heart condition," she said.
Adding to her heartbreak, she said her husband has not yet been told that their youngest child has died. Doctors have advised her to keep the news from him until his condition stabilises.
"My husband was very close to our youngest son. We waited over 10 years to have Muhammad Uwais. I have accepted what happened, though it is painful to face the reality that he is gone in such a way," she added.
Nur Zarini said she has been travelling back and forth to the hospital with the help of relatives, as she does not drive.
"For the past two weeks, I've had to rely on relatives for transport to visit my husband in hospital. My daughter stays home alone and still has to attend school.
"My biggest hope is that my husband regains consciousness. I'm ready to care for him until he recovers, so that we can try to live a normal life again, even without our beloved son's presence," she said.
Nur Zarini admitted she is unsure about what the future holds.
"To be honest, I'm at a loss about what comes next. But for now, I just want to focus on my husband. If possible, I plan to find a job to support our family and will apply for assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM)," she said.
The crash occurred on May 15 in Kampung Baroh Pial when Mohd Fakhrazi, their son Muhammad Uwais, and two young relatives — a niece and a nephew — were riding a motorcycle and were struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident.
A 54-year-old man suspected to be the driver of the Proton Persona involved in the crash was arrested on the same day.
Pasir Mas police said the suspect tested negative for drugs and will be brought to court for a remand application.
