'A majority of students know of only a few career options, even as there are over 250 of them'

The Hindu18-05-2025

As per a recent survey, around 93% of the students are aware of just seven career options, while there are more than 250 career options. But more focus has only been on engineering, medical, architecture, pharmacy among others, which is why career counselling becomes key to those facing challenges in finding their career paths, said Shivakumaraiah, CEO and Joint Secretary, Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumakuru, inaugurating the 23rd edition of The Hindu Education Plus Career Counselling - 2025 session, held at Birla Auditorium, Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumakuru on Sunday.
Over 500 students and their parents participated in the event.
He said even as new opportunities were emerging, new innovations were also transforming traditional careers like engineering, which remains the most popular career choice. He said new subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Blockchain Technology, Machine Learning, Data Analysis, Robotics, Cyber Security among others as the new game changers.
'Career counselling is the stepping stone for all young minds. Generally, a majority of students follow the crowd, especially follow their friends, a mistake many make. You should have a passion for the stream of study and career you choose to pursue,' he advised students.
Jayasheel P.J., former Assistant Nodal Officer, CET Nodal Centre, Tumakuru, explained the process of the Common Entrance Test (CET) for various professional courses like Engineering, B.Sc Agriculture, BVSc, Pharmacy, B.Sc Nursing and others.
Ravikumar L., vice-principal, BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru, said that in engineering studies, choosing the best course and college was key. 'Choices are plenty. But the infrastructure at a college, the quality of its faculty, and companies visiting the college for placement are key to selecting a college,' he said, adding, 'improving skills to meet the expectations of the industry was key to the success of engineering students'. 'Improving communication skills, technological skills, team building, leadership skills, and entrepreneurial skills is very important,' he said.
Ameen E-Mudassar, career counsellor and CEO of CIGMA India, said for success in any career students choose, they must learn multiple skills, upgrade themselves and try to acquire knowledge online by taking up courses. 'Doing online courses and learning a foreign language will always help any career you choose to pursue,' he said.
Speaking about Chartered Accountancy, Manjunath M. Hallur, Chairman of ICAI-Bengaluru branch, said, 'Chartered accountancy is not just about numbers, but it's about trust, responsibility and making smart decisions in the world of finance and business. CAs are the most trusted professionals in India,' he said.
'Civil Services best gateway to make a difference'
Anupriya Sakya, IPS Probationer (2023 batch) and All India Rank (AIR) 120 in Union Public Service Commission Civil Service Exams - 2024, who addressed students at the event, said how civic services were the best gateway for especially people from the middle class to make a real difference in the society. 'I come from a very humble and middle class background. I had not been to any fancy schools. But during college days, I had friends whose parents were civil servants. Inspired by them, I decided to become a civil servant. Even in my distant and extended family, I am the first person to pursue civil service exams,' she said.
She shared her journey and how her persistence to become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer was finally paying off. 'My first attempt was in 2022 and I missed out from being selected by six marks. And then, in 2023 I was fortunate to get into the Indian Police Service (IPS), but I again missed out becoming an IAS officer again by 6 marks. And finally in my third attempt I have got a good ranking and hope to be selected as an IAS officer,' she said.
'If you pass civil service exams, you will be a direct part of administration and governance. In your initial days of your career, you will be posted as Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police (SP) among other posting depending on your service. When we talk of policy implementation on the ground, it is the DC who will play a key role. In the later phase of your IAS career, you will serve as a Secretary of the government and you will have the opportunity to draft policies,' she explained about the career of a civil servant.
'As a civil servant, you not only get diverse opportunities and experiences, but also come face to face with the society's challenges and faultlines. The common saying goes that no two days in the life of a civil servant are similar,' she said.
'I am very much interested in Aeronautical Engineering, and I am planning to join a good college in the State. So, this career counseling was really helpful and I got a lot of information.'
Kiran Kumar, II PU Student, Tumakuru
'I passed out of II PU this year with 75% of marks in the Science stream. I am planning to pursue engineering, specialising either in Computer Science or Mechanical. I could gather information about college selection and other issues. It was a very good session.'
Harshitha G. Kadadevarmath, Tumakuru
'My daughter has passed II PU, and she is planning to pursue engineering. We did not have enough information about colleges, courses, fees, and other things. This career counselling helped us a lot.'
Chandrika, Parent, Tumakuru
'My daughter joined I PU this year. However, this career counselling has helped us decide the future course, college, various career options and placements.'
Rangaswamy, Parent, Tumakuru

Meet Sachin Agrawal, brother of world's youngest female Chartered Accountant who topped CA finals exam at…, she holds Guinness World Record for…, her name is... Success in India's toughest exams—like JEE, NEET, UPSC CSE, CA, and SSC—is a journey that requires a combination of immense stress and great commitment. These exams not only test academic prowess but also test discipline, time management, and mental toughness. With lakhs of students sitting for exams every year, the path to success becomes narrower and narrower. More and more students want to clear the exam each year with the hope of success. But only a small number clear the first hurdle. As the process unfolds, the percentage drops significantly. At the end, only a handful have made it, and from there, just one candidate claims the All India Rank 1 title. In a world where passing challenging exams is a feat in its own right, only a few names pass the exams on the first attempt, while becoming stars in their own right. One of these incredible feats is the journey of Nandini Agrawal, an inspiring woman from Morena in Madhya Pradesh, who not only passed the Chartered Accountancy; she made history. At just 19, Nandini became the youngest female Chartered Accountant in the world. This is confirmed by the Guinness World Records. Nandini's inspiring journey is a huge reminder that age is no barrier to achieving greatness if you have focus, hard work, and a strong mindset. Born on October 18, 2001, Nandini Agrawal made history in 2021 by becoming ranked All India Rank 1 in the Chartered Accountancy (New) examination, a feat the India Book of Records recognizes. Nandini appeared for the final exam in July 2021, achieving the distinguished milestone at only 19 years, 8 months, and 18 days old. Nandini Agrawal's results were officially declared on November 29, 2021, and as such, she is not only one of the youngest Chartered Accountants but also one of the youngest to achieve All India Rank 1. Nandini Agrawal's story is the perfect example of how grit and concentration can help to break age-old records—quite literally. All India Rank 1 topper in the CA final exam at just 19 years old, Nandini scored a sensational total of 614 out of 800 marks. This achievement is made even more exciting as Nandini's older brother, 21-year-old Sachin Agrawal, passed the same exam, securing All India Rank 18. The sibling success story is a rare example of dedication to help one another succeed through the shared experience of working hard to achieve excellence in an academic environment. In 2021, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, also wished the remarkable siblings well. Taking to his official Twitter account, he wrote, 'Congratulations to the star siblings of Morena, Madhya Pradesh! Well done Nandini Agrawal for topping the all-India CA final exam and her brother Sachin Agrawal for securing the 18th rank. Best of luck for a bright future to both of you.' Their achievement was even more remarkable because the pandemic adversely affected the preparation of many other aspirants, gradually resulting in these dedicated siblings utilizing the time at home to study and revise for their exam. Nandini Agrawal completed her 11th and 12th grade studies in Victor Convent Higher Secondary School. She created history in 2021 by becoming the world's youngest female Chartered Accountant at the age of 19 years, obtaining All India Rank 1 in the CA Final examination by scoring 614 out of 800, which is 76.75%. When the previous results were declared, she was 19 years and 330 days old, which officially verified the Guinness World Record for being the youngest female Chartered Accountant. In a 2021 interview with The Indian Express, Sachin Agrawal, Nandini's brother, reflected on their journey together, saying, 'There were times when we fought like crazy but that only lasted for some time and we got back to normal. I would have been happy with even 70 per cent marks as I did not have high expectations but I knew that Nandini will do great. She's brilliant and deserves all the success. In many ways, she is my mentor.' Nandini and Sachin's father, Naresh Chandra Gupta, is a tax practitioner. Their mother, Dimple Gupta, is a homemaker. Nandini and Sachin attribute their success to consistent preparations and in their experience, encourage aspirants to be diligent with ICAI study material as it was key to their success in helping them to crack the exam as they have done. The statement on the official website of the India Book of Records reads,' The record for being the youngest Chartered Accountant was set by Nandini Agrawal (born on October 18, 2001) of Morena, Madhya Pradesh. She appeared for her final CA (New) examination in July 2021 and secured the 1st rank at the age of 19 years, 8 months and 18 days, as confirmed on November 29, 2021.'

Institutional round applications for engg, mgmt via CET cell too

Mumbai: Aspirants seeking admission in the institutional round for engineering, management and pharmacy courses can now apply centrally through the state's CET cell too. Previously, candidates only had the option of approaching individual colleges directly and often faced the risk of being turned away on various pretexts. To bring in more transparency in admissions to institutional quota seats across technical courses, including diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate, the state govt has decided to step up precautionary measures. For instance, the govt has now removed the ambiguity in the definition of 'NRI', paving the way for only genuine candidates to secure seats under the quota. Additionally, the state's Fees Regulatory Authority (FRA) also fixed fees for institutional quota seats for the first time in technical colleges—private, unaided colleges can now charge up to five times the fees for merit seats from NRI students and three times from students taking admission in management seats. The govt issued a notification bringing in amendments in the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Fees) Act, 2015 on Friday. One of the provisions in the notification stated, "In case a candidate is unable to submit the application directly to the concerned institute for any reason, the candidate shall have the opportunity to apply through the website of the CET cell till the date of allotment of final admission round. " These applications will be forwarded to the respective institutions after the allotment process of round four and will be considered for merit, it mentioned. Vinod Mohitkar, director, directorate of technical education, said the govt is not overstepping on the rights of management to conduct the institutional round. "We receive some complaints from students about certain institutions refusing applications for the institutional round. We are, therefore, only offering students an additional platform to apply. These applications will be compiled and sent to respective institutions and they will include these names, while preparing their merit list," said the director. Some of the admission rules were also modified in the notification, but were announced before. The state's cabinet, in a meeting this week, also announced aspirants seeking admission under the NRI quota for any courses will have to submit a certificate from respective consulate offices or documents mentioned in Guardians and Wards Act, 1890. A department official said even local students claimed admissions under NRI quota by submitting affidavits. Higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil had announced revision in admission process for more transparency.

3 city girls score 100 percentile in MHT-CET for sciences

Pune: Fourteen students from the state have scored a perfect 100 percentile in the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) for pharmacy and agriculture undergraduate courses, whose results were declared on Tuesday. According to the list released by the CET cell, city girls have secured top ranks. Shreya Yadav, Siddhi Manjabapu Badhe and Snehal Nivrutti Diwate are among the 14 students who have scored 100 percentile. The next step for successful students is the counselling process likely to start in late June. There will be three rounds of counselling, where students will get seats based on their choices, category, and marks they obtained. Many CET toppers also performed exceptionally well in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and wish to pursue medicine. Anshika Shah of Mumbai has decided to pursue medical education despite securing 100 percentile in CET. Her interest in pursuing medicine stems from her aunt and uncle who are in the medical field. The MHT-CET exam for the physics, chemistry, and biology (PCB) group examination was held from April 22 to 30. Of the 301,072 registered students, 282,734 took the test. This year, the number of meritorious students scoring between 90 to 100 percentile has decreased by 1,390 compared to last year. The 100 percentile, which was achieved by 17 students last year, has been reduced to 14 this year. The number of students scoring 80 to 89.99 has also decreased by 1,451 students. In addition to the CET results, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has also released the schedule for its recruitment exams for 2023, which is expected to attract thousands of government job aspirants across the state.
