EFL star banned for 13-MATCHES and fined £2,000 after admitting to FA charge of misconduct for homophobic slur

Daily Mail25-04-2025

Tranmere Rovers midfielder Sam Finley has been handed a 13-match suspension and fined £2,000 by the FA for making a homophobic comment to an opposition player.
The 32-year-old has also been ordered to attend an education programme after admitting a charge of misconduct for a statement made to Walsall striker Jamille Matt during a League Two match in January.
Finley was sent off in the 38th minute of the clash - which Tranmere went on to lose 5-1 - after picking up two yellow cards.
In a statement, the FA said: 'An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a 13-match suspension, £2,000 fine and mandatory education programme on Sam Finley for a breach of FA Rule E3 during the EFL League Two fixture between Tranmere Rovers and Walsall on Saturday 11 January 2025.
'It was alleged that the midfielder's language towards a Walsall player around the 23rd minute was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper contrary to FA Rule E3.1. It was further alleged that this constitutes an 'aggravated breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to sexual orientation.
'Sam Finley subsequently admitted the charge against him.'
The midfielder has received one match more than the 12-game upper limit for an 'aggravated breach' because of his past offences. In 2016 he was handed a four-game suspension and fined for making a homophobic remark to a referee while playing for AFC Fylde.
He was also banned in 2020 for eight matches - reduced from 11 - for an offensive comment to a Rochdale player.
Following Finley's latest suspension, Tranmere said they 'condemn all forms of discrimination and will deal with the matter internally'.
The Liverpudlian, who has played 37 times this term, will now be unavailable for the club's final two fixtures as they attempt to remain in the Football League.

Gareth Southgate rejected for new job as chief confirms ex-England boss snub

Gareth Southgate recently offered to become the new manager of Poland in what would've been his first coaching role since resigning as England boss in July 2024 Gareth Southgate has missed out on becoming Poland's new manager, the president of their FA has confirmed. Southgate, 54, has been out work since he resigned as England boss in July 2024, two days after the Three Lions agonisingly lost the final of the European Championship to Spain. The ex-England manager has been focussing on ventures outside of football, leading to suggestions that he won't ever return to the sport. But in a shock development, Southgate last week expressed his interest in ending his year-long absence by taking over a fractured Poland side in the wake of boss Michal Probierz's explosive departure. ‌ Probierz made the unpopular decision to strip star player Robert Lewandowski of the captaincy, dividing his nation ahead of a damaging 2-1 defeat to Finland in World Cup qualifying. Barcelona striker Lewandowski subsequently announced that he'd longer play for Poland under Probierz, who stepped down amid intense backlash after two years of underwhelming results and performances. ‌ Southgate's representatives then contacted the Polish FA (PZPN) to signal that the 54-year-old would be interested. But PZPN president Cezary Kulesza has now confirmed that he won't get the job. "We received an offer of his employment," Kulesza revealed to Przeglad Sportowy. "But we must remember the basic issue: no foreign coach will give us a guarantee that we will advance to the world championship. If he gave us such a guarantee, I would hire him right away." Kulesza, who's set to appoint his fourth manager in as many years as president, used the 'perfect example' of former Portugal boss Fernando Santos to explain why Southgate isn't in his thinking. Santos was appointed Poland manager in January 2023 but only lasted nine torrid months. "Fernando Santos is a perfect example," Kulesza went on. "Coach with success, big name, everyone applauded, and the verification was surprising and painful for all of us." Instead, Poland want to appoint Maciej Skorza. The experienced Pole is currently managing Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds at the Club World Cup and Kulesza has been in the United States to hold talks. Should Poland have appointed Gareth Southgate? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ "If I had to assess, the chances are 50-50," he said of Skorza. "Our talks were very specific. The position of national team coach is probably the dream of every coach in Poland." As for Southgate, he was heavily linked with Manchester United in 2024. However, the departure of ex-England ally Dan Ashworth from Old Trafford means that it's unlikely he'd succeed Ruben Amorim if he were to be sacked or quit in the new season. In December, Southgate hinted that his next role could be outside of football or sport altogether. "I've been 37 years a player and coach, and I'm not against the next period of my life being totally different," he told the BBC. "When you've had one of the biggest jobs, how do you follow that up?"

Kevin Thomson opens up on Rangers coaching future as he insists ball is in new Ibrox regime's court

Thomson returned to Gers academy coaching set-up earlier this year Kevin Thomson admits he doesn't know if he will continue his role in the coaching set-up at Rangers next season. The former midfielder returned to the club back in January to work alongside U18s boss Steven Smith at Ibrox back in January after initially leaving Gers to become manager of Kelty Hearts back in 2021. ‌ Despite leading the Fife side to the League Two title in his first season, Thomson opted to step away from the job, turning his focus to media commitments. ‌ Thomson had been linked with a position on former teammate Barry Ferguson' s coaching team when the ex Light Blues captain replaced the sacked Philippe Clement back in February, but was omitted in favour of Neil McCann, Allan McGregor and Billy Dodds. New boss Russell Martin has been joined at Ibrox by one-time Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks and performance analyst Rhys Owen, who both worked with him at previous club Southampton. And with Thomson current contract with Rangers set to expire on June 30 - he says he is yet to learn if he will remain a part of the new owners 49ers Enterpises plans going forward. Speaking on BBC Sportsound. he said: "Obviously in that time there's been a takeover, a new manager. "My contract finished on June 30. As of yet I've not really had much dialogue with the club. "I'm just waiting to see what's what. ‌ "Moving forward, if there's an opportunity there then brilliant. "If there's not, then you know what I'm like, I just bash on and keep grafting away."
