People Are Laughing At The USA (And Canada, Too) In This "Mr. World" Costume Pageant
I am overjoyed today to inform you that there is an annual(ish) "Mr. World" competition, in which handsome men from around the world compete in a pageant. Part of that pageant is a costume show, where the contestants dress in a costume that represents their country's culture and identity. For example, here's Bolivia's contestant from the 2024 pageant, in his costume inspired by Bolivian folk dance:
And here's Peru's national costume, inspired by Inca nobility:
And here's Venezuela's costume, inspired by the country's war for independence from Spain:
Even though these costumes were from the 2024 competition (which took place six months ago), the video has been making the rounds, because... well, here's the United States' costume:

Yeah, that's just a Captain America costume.
The contestant did a little flip and a superhero landing, though!

Now, I don't want to act like there weren't other countries that maybe phoned it in a little. Here's Canada, in head-to-toe denim, aka a "Canadian tuxedo":
People also felt that France's costume was perhaps a little too on the nose:
Americans on Reddit had a lot of thoughts about the USA's costume choice:
Now, let's not forget that it's a Captain America costume that they BEDAZZLED, so it's bespoke:
There were a lot of suggestions on what the USA could have done instead:
But hey, at least the Canadians seem happy:
Anyway, I'm really hoping there's a 2025 competition this year. Bye!

Senior Cat with $1.25 Adoption Fee Gets Second Chance at Life
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A recent trip to the humane society turned into a life-altering experience for a woman online. In a Reddit post, u/natanyad shared that she spent a mere $1.25 to bring home her very first orange cat, a nearly 15-year-old senior she named Ichabod. The heartwarming story of his adoption has resonated widely with Redditors, receiving 29,000 upvotes. "Look what I got for $1.25! My first orange [cat]," the proud owner wrote in the post. "We got Ichabod for $1.25 at Elmbrook Humane Society (Wisconsin). Brought him home a few weeks ago, a few months shy of his 15th birthday. One of the chillest cats we've ever adopted. Social and vocal. My first orange and refreshingly at home after just a few days." Stock photo: A woman opens her wallet to pay for something. The incredible deal and the heartwarming nature of adopting an older cat sparked enthusiastic responses from Redditors. "A senior orange cat for $1.25? That's the best investment ever! An amazing deal for such a wonderful companion! A win win," one user commented. "Well, you definitely got a good deal there," another person reacted to the purchase. "Just look at this guy. He's perfect." Many echoed the call to adopt senior pets for their charm and often overlooked status: 100 percent. All cats regardless of age deserve a safe and loving home. But so often elder cats are overlooked," a commenter wrote. "My current cat was almost 10 when I adopted her. She is a loving cuddler. I know I will have less time with her, but that just means she will get twice the love." "I got my 9-year-old cat for $5, absolutely the best $5 I've ever spent," another wrote. In the comments, the owner provided further insight into Ichabod's background, painting a picture of his journey to his new home. She wrote that Ichabod's family moved and couldn't take him, and that he came with a huge bag of toys. "Someone spoiled him," she wrote. And despite his age, his health is manageable, with only some thyroid medication to take for his maintenance. The poster's commitment to senior pet adoption runs deep. She wrote that her effort to rescue pets spans decades and numerous furry companions. "I've been 35 years—since I moved here right out of college," they revealed. "I'm losing track, but I've adopted seven dogs, and Ichabod must be my eighth cat. We tend to adopt older pets since I'm old too." Newsweek reached out to u/natanyad for comment via Reddit.

My Mind Is Blown After Finding Out What The Letters In "A.M." And "P.M." Actually Mean
Americans use many abbreviations in everyday speech and writing. Shorthands like 'yd' for yard and 'a/c' for air conditioning are pretty straightforward, but there are some misconceptions about others. For example, take 'a.m.' and 'p.m.' People in the US are constantly thinking and talking about time in terms of a.m. and p.m., but if you ask someone what those letters stand for, you may be surprised how little people actually know about the abbreviations. Some say it's 'after midnight' or 'past midday,' but that isn't exactly true... In fact, like many words and phrases in the English language, a.m. is short for a Latin phrase, 'ante meridiem' (or 'before midday'), while p.m. is short for 'post meridiem' (or 'after midday'). While there isn't a ton of information out there about when exactly a.m. and p.m. came into popular use in the English language, the 12-hour timekeeping system dates back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. During the Renaissance period, mechanical clocks with 12-hour analog dials appeared in churches and palaces throughout Europe. Today, most of the world uses a 24-hour system, while many English-speaking countries follow the 12-hour clock. In the places that use the 12-hour standard, there is some debate around what to use for noon and midnight. By convention, people in the US say 12 p.m. in reference to noon and 12 a.m. for midnight. But some believe that going from 11 p.m. to 12 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. is confusing. Others would argue that noon and midnight are neither a.m. nor p.m. since noon IS midday, it can't technically be ante meridiem or post meridiem midday. Likewise, midnight is both 12 hours before midday and 12 hours after midday, which makes it confusing to choose between a.m. or p.m. To avoid this confusion, many prefer '12 midnight' or '12 noon,' but that can seem a bit redundant, given that 'noon' or 'midnight' alone convey the same information. A lesser-known option is to denote noon with 'm' for 'meridiem,' as in 12 m ― though you run the risk of people interpreting that as '12 midnight.' Given all the confusion and debate, maybe we should go with the 24-hour military time and be done with it? After all, who doesn't love staying up late on Dec. 31 to shout 'Happy New Year!' at zero hundred hours? (Or is it twenty-four hundred hours?) This article originally appeared on HuffPost.

Miley Cyrus Seemingly Addressed Signing Event After Ignoring Fans
Over the weekend, Miley Cyrus found herself trending after a number of viral clips appeared to show her ignoring fans at a signing event with Naomi Campbell in London, celebrating the vinyl release of their song, 'Every Girl You've Ever Loved.' For context, Naomi livestreamed the event on Instagram, so there are tons of different clips from the stream making the rounds online. And while some of the footage shows Miley and Naomi sharing sweet moments with fans as they lined up to get their vinyls signed, other parts of the livestream made it seem like Miley and Naomi spent more time talking to one another than engaging with fans. In one particularly awkward clip from Naomi's livestream, she and Miley can be seen chatting away to each other while a fan stands in front of them. When a photographer prompts them to pose for a picture, Miley seemingly glances up at the fan for a split second and half-heartedly poses, without so much as exchanging a single word with them before they walk away. A different clip, which has been viewed over 3.8 million times on X, shows another fan even looking a little confused by how little attention Miley and Naomi were paying her as she tried to interact with them. Needless to say, the videos like these were not received well. And people wasted no time criticizing Miley for seemingly failing to give some of her fans the time and acknowledgment they deserved. 'Wow! That's so inconsiderate & rude IMO,' one user wrote on Reddit, while someone else added: 'I'd be so disappointed if I waited in line for someone I was excited for just to be straight up dismissed and ignored.' They continued: 'I understand celebs can't be considerate of every fan that comes their way, but at a signing? Consider how you're making someone feel when you do something like that. That goes for everyone, not just celebs.''You can see the disappointment in the fans' faces when they realize she's not paying them any attention,' another user observed, as someone else branded the behavior as 'so inconsiderate and dismissive.' As Naomi's full livestream shows, not all the interactions were so awkward, and since the backlash, several fans who were at the event have spoken out to say that they still had a great experience. And now, with clips still making the rounds online, Miley has shared a post about the event on Instagram, in which she said that she and Naomi 'adored meeting' all the fans who showed up. '@naomi thank you for celebrating the Every Girl You've Ever Loved vinyl release day with me. Laughing with you is my favorite. I'll miss you until we reunite. Love you forever,' she wrote alongside a series of pictures and videos of herself and Naomi posing together. 'Thank you to everyone who showed up to the signing, we adored meeting you. If you missed it, get your life & our vinyl that's available now.' She did not make reference to any of the backlash, which I guess isn't all that surprising. But what do you make of this whole thing? LMK in the comments.
