Sickle Cell Anaemia: Year-long campaign in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 17 (UNI) To strengthen awareness about sickle cell anaemia, a year-long campaign, 'Let's Know and Prevent Sickle Cell Disease', will be launched in Kerala.
The campaign, jointly organised by the Health Department and the Tribal Department, will provide awareness on topics related to sickle cell disease.
We are developing special messages, including in tribal dialects, for patients, pregnant women, and children affected by the disease. The logo of the campaign was officially launched by Health Minister Veena George.
Special screening is ongoing to identify sickle cell patients in tribal communities. The state government launched a comprehensive sickle cell treatment programme in 2007.
Screening tests and follow-up treatments are being conducted in tribal areas like Wayanad and Attappady. The project was comprehensively implemented in 2023 by the Centre, targeting regions with a high prevalence of the disease across 17 selected states at the national level.
In Kerala, the programme was extended to Nilambur, Attappady blocks, Kannur, Kasaragod and Idukki.

Steps taken to eradicate Tuberculosis, AIDS

Kollam, Jun 22 (UNI) The TB Elimination and AIDS Prevention Control Committee has emphasised on the need to expand awareness initiatives and conduct more camps for eliminating these two serious illnesses. The decision regarding this was taken by the Committee under the chairmanship of District Collector N. Devadas. Steps have been taken to intensify tuberculosis and AIDS eradication efforts in this district of Kerala. TB diagnostic camps will be organized in areas where a high number of migrant workers reside. Individuals with more serious respiratory issues will be referred for expert treatment. If required, isolation centers will be considered for treating such patients. With the support of local self-government institutions, nutritious food kits will be distributed to patients. Special camps were conducted in the coastal region from Paravur to Azhikode, and awareness stickers were affixed on hundreds of boats. Delhi govt to add dialysis machines, imaging facilities under PPP model

New Delhi: The Delhi government will soon add more than 30 dialysis machines in its hospitals, outsource MRI, CT scan and ultrasound services under the PPP model and construct VishramGrih (rest houses) for patients and their attendants, officials said. These developments were reviewed during a Health Department meeting chaired by Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh on June 18, aimed at strengthening public healthcare infrastructure in the national capital. According to the agenda, the government is also working to ramp up manpower across healthcare institutions and constitute new health councils and committees, with timelines set for implementation. Singh told PTI that 150 dialysis machines have already been installed across 16 hospitals under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme - Public Private Partnership (PMNDP-PPP) model and an additional 32 to 40 machines will be added soon. Officials reviewed the status of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, critical care blocks under the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), rollout of Jan Aushadhi Kendras and the centralised procurement system. The meeting also discussed outsourcing outpatient departments (OPD) and inpatient department (IPD) registration services, gaps in staffing at hospitals and Mohalla Clinics, the Hospital Information Management System, and procurement of essential medicines. An additional agenda item was the constitution of various councils and identification of sensitive posts within the health department. A senior official said timelines were issued by the minister, with most work expected to be completed within three to four weeks within a month and in some cases by the upcoming month. PTI>

Former England fast bowler Lawrence dies

London, June 22 (UNI) Former England and Gloucestershire fast bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence has died at the age of 61. Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to represent England, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) last year. He was appointed MBE in the King's Birthday Honours earlier this month after raising money and awareness of the condition. Lawrence played five Test matches for England and took 625 wickets in 280 matches during a 16-year career at Gloucestershire. "'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed," said a family statement announcing his death. He made his first-class debut for the county in 1981, gaining the nickname Syd after the British bandleader, according to a BBC news. Lawrence went on to take three wickets on his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Lord's in 1988. A bowler capable of reaching extreme pace, Lawrence did not play again for England until 1991 when he took 14 wickets across three Tests and played his sole one-day international the same summer. However, his career was curtailed by a serious knee injury suffered while playing for England against New Zealand the following winter. He played four County Championship matches in a comeback in 1997 but did not play again in top-level cricket afterwards. After retirement he became a nightclub owner and amateur bodybuilder before being named Gloucestershire's club president in 2022. He continued in the role after his MND diagnosis last year and has been a prominent campaigner to support those with the disease. UNI BM
