Man Utd & Spurs disabled fans condemn final ticket allocation

BBC News20-05-2025

Disabled fans of Manchester United and Tottenham have criticised the number of wheelchair tickets available for the Europa League final as "insulting" - with both clubs given 26 tickets each in a near 50,000-capacity Bilbao stadium.Manchester United Disabled Supporters' Association and Spurs Ability, the fan groups representing disabled supporters, have expressed anger at the size of the allocation, which includes an additional 15 'easy access' seats, from an allocation of 15,000 tickets per club.In response, competition organiser Uefa said it had provided 75 wheelchair positions - including neutral spaces - at the San Mames stadium, with free companion seat and guaranteed sightlines.Uefa said 15% of those tickets remained unsold and available for purchase as of Tuesday morning. Both fan groups disputed this claim to BBC Sport. The stadium, home to Spanish top-flight side Athletic Bilbao, has a capacity of more than 53,000 but this has been reduced to 49,600 for the final on Wednesday. The stadium is usually capable of hosting 208 wheelchair and 102 easy access seats. That falls slightly short of the recommended provision in Uefa's own guidelines for stadiums of its size. But the two supporters' groups and the disabled sports charity Level Playing Field have calculated that even within the San Mames' limitations, both clubs should still have 58 wheelchair spaces and a further 28 easy access tickets.Spurs Ability member Mark Spencer has spinal injuries but is not in a wheelchair. He has travelled to Bilbao by car without a ticket to watch the match in a fan park.He told BBC Sport: "To say I'm gutted is an understatement. I wasn't able to go to Madrid for the Champions League [final] in 2019 and I thought this might be my chance - but Uefa have just not given us the percentage of seating that they should be giving us under their own rules and regulations."You feel that you're being prevented from watching football and supporting your team because of a disability so it's quite insulting and very disappointing."Manchester United Disabled Supporters' Association secretary Rick Clement said: "Uefa, ultimately, have a responsibility to football fans to support your team. That should include people with disabilities."Dr Rita Egan, another member of Spurs Ability, said the group has been "dismayed" by the allocation and accused Uefa of having "ignored" complaints by not replying to correspondence.Level Playing Field chair Tony Taylor said: "We have seen another failure from Uefa at a showpiece event."Accountability has been lacking before and now we can see more disregard for disabled fans, which ignores the governing body's own guidance and under-utilises the facilities available, without adequate justification."In response, Uefa said it was "working hard to improve both standards and experiences" for disabled fans and that it took into account "the quality of sightlines", "historical demand" and the ratio between capacity and accessible seating. It stated that for the Women's Champions League final last year at the same stadium, 59 of the 60 allocated seats were sold, and for the men's Europa League final last season between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin, only 41 of the 93 allocated seats were sold.Uefa also told BBC Sport that it "investigated solutions" for more accessible seats and spoke to disability access officers at United and Spurs.European football's governing body added: "While both indicated they could sell more accessible tickets, they also expressed a preference for maintaining the current allocations rather than increasing numbers at the expense of seat quality."BBC Sport has approached both clubs for comment.

Alejandro Garnacho pictured in a Marcus Rashford Aston Villa shirt

Alejandro Garnacho has risked angering Manchester United fans by posing in an Aston Villa shirt carrying Marcus Rashford's name on the back. After a season in which both players became outcasts under Ruben Amorim, Garnacho posted the image of himself in the jersey while on holiday. The picture is included in holiday snaps he posted on Instagram of a trip to Ibiza, while he continues to weigh up his future as an Old Trafford exit beckons. There is little doubt that the image posted on Garnacho's official account is intended to be provocative. The No 9 claret and blue shirt that Rashford wore while on loan at Villa Park last season takes centre stage as Garnacho walks towards a Ferrari and a Lamborghini. Villa have been listed among clubs potentially interested in the 20-year-old, who is said to be keen on the prospect of remaining in the Premier League. Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Napoli have also been linked with proposals for the forward. Amorim did not name Garnacho in his 20-man squad for their final game of a miserable season after telling the Argentina international to find a new club. Napoli bid for Garnacho in January after selling Georgia forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris St-Germain for £63 million but were rebuffed. United are thought to want around £60 million for the Argentina forward, whom Chelsea also tried and failed to sign in January. The Argentina international previously angered United fans with his comments immediately after their crushing 1-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. 'Obviously, it is hard for everyone. Our season was s---. We did not beat anyone in the league,' Garnacho told reporters at the San Mames Stadium. 'We lacked a lot of things. When you don't score goals, you always need more. Until we reached the final, I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today…'

Man Utd fans fume ‘get out of our club' after Garnacho's controversial Instagram post wearing Rashford Villa shirt

MANCHESTER UNITED fans fumed 'get out of our club' after Alejandro Garnacho posed in an Aston Villa shirt bearing the name of fellow outcast Marcus Rashford. Garnacho, 20, has been told by Ruben Amorim to find a new club after a disappointing season with the Red Devils. 6 6 The Argentina international scored just six Premier League goals. And he is now on the hunt for a fresh start, with clubs including Napoli and Chelsea interested. In the meantime, Garnacho has been living it up while holidaying in locations such as Rome and Tokyo. His latest stop took him to the Spanish island of Ibiza. And Garnacho made his feelings perfectly clear on his United situation as he posed for a controversial photo. The winger stood with his back to camera outside a luxury Villa with two Lamborghinis parked in the driveway. However, Garnacho was not wearing his usual fashionable clothes and instead covered himself in the shirt of United's rivals Aston Villa. Not only that, the jersey also bore the name of teammate and fellow misfit Rashford, who was axed by Amorim earlier this year. He spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Villa Park and has now declared his intention to join Barcelona. By wearing the shirt, Garnacho appeared to show his support for Rashford while also cutting ties with United. New Man Utd star Matheus Cunha runs rings around pals as he plays 5-a-side on streets in his hometown 6 6 6 6 And Red Devils fans reacted angrily as they flooded social media with raging comments. One said: 'Get out of our club.' Another declared: 'Diabolical.' One noted: 'This is why we need a culture reset.' Another added: 'Game's gone.' But Villa fans seemed delighted at the potential prospect of signing Garnacho as Rashford's replacement. One said: 'Begging for a move.' Another declared: 'Leave him alone.'
