Boy, 10, arrested after fire at block of flats

Yahoo03-06-2025

A ten-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire at a block of flats that caused 50 people to be evacuated.
The fire at Rynet Court on Marsh House Lane, Warrington broke out at about 17:20 BST on Monday, and firefighters from across Cheshire and Manchester were called to try to bring the blaze under control.
A joint investigation into the cause of the fire, which flat residents described as "terrifying", has been launched by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Police
The boy who was arrested on suspicion of arson has since been bailed pending further enquiries, a spokesman for the force said.
Thomas Harris and his family were safely rescued from the blaze, while one woman said she had had to pass her six-year-old son to safety from her first floor window.
Mr Harris, who has lived on the second floor in the block of flats for five years, said he was shocked to see smoke in the stairwell.
Det Insp David Schofield from Cheshire Police said: "I'd like thank residents for their patience throughout the night while emergency services dealt with the incident."
A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: "A total of 50 people had been rescued from the building, including through the windows and balconies of the third and fourth floor.
"North West Ambulance Service triaged and treated those rescued on the scene and thankfully no serious injuries have been reported," he added.
A nearby Territorial Army centre was opened up as a relief centre to house the 50 residents evacuated from the second, third and fourth floors of the flats.

Dayton man sentenced to probation for child abuse

Jun. 20—A Dayton man who reportedly scarred and abused his daughter was sentenced to probation. Antwan U-Gene Harris, 34, will spend up to five years on Community Control Sanctions, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office. In May, Harris pleaded guilty to one count of endangering children in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. An investigation began on March 31 after his daughter's teachers reported the abuse, according to Dayton Municipal Court records. The 14-year-old girl told investigators her father hit her multiples with an extension cord two weeks prior, leaving scars on her arms and legs, an affidavit read. Harris reportedly told police he caused the injuries with a belt in 2024. A grand jury indicted Harris on an endangering children charge on April 8.

Fresh warnings over car meets blighting Alderley Edge as police urge 'think again'

Fresh warnings have been issued over car meets blighting Alderley Edge with police urging those participating to 'think again'. It was earlier this year that launched a crackdown on illegal car meets following a number of unauthorised events in Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Alderley Edge, where high-powered vehicles had been 'drag' racing. Hundreds of people are known to usually attend the events in some of Cheshire most affluent areas - but they have previously sparked concern from residents because of the noise of revving engines and parking, with cars mounted pavements, roundabouts and grass verges. It has not been approved by the local authority or Cheshire Police. A dispersal order was put in place across Alderley Edge in March this year, to crack down on the drivers causing a nuisance in the area and potential anti-social behaviour. And senior officers previously told the M.E.N that some motorists involved in car meets across Cheshire and Greater Manchester were 'playing up' and performing dangerous stunts 'for likes on social media'. "Previous events have attracted hundreds of people, many in high powered motor vehicles driving dangerously causing excessive noise and anti-social behaviour, all of which have caused alarm and distress to local residents," a Cheshire Police spokesperson said. Issuing a warning, Chief Inspector Zoe Bowden, head of Macclesfield Local Policing Unit, said: 'We are aware of reports circulating on social media regarding a potential car meet in Alderley Edge this weekend and I would urge anyone planning to attend to think again. 'The event has not been authorised by ourselves, or Cheshire East Council, and therefore it will be classed as an illegal car meet. 'Patrols will be stepped up across the area and robust action against anyone who is found to break the law. 'Our message is clear – anti-social behaviour and anti-social use of vehicles will not be tolerated.' --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life.
