'Dangerous' banned Pembrokeshire driver was over four times drink-drive limit

A DISQUALIFIED driver was over four times the drink-drive limit when he was driving dangerously in Pembrokeshire. Peter Edgar, 39, of Chestnut Way in Milford Haven, appeared at court charged with four offences. Edgar was driving a Vauxhall Combo van dangerously in Newgale on June 18. When breathalysed, he recorded having 151 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35. Checks revealed Edgar was banned from driving at the time, meaning he was also driving without insurance. He pleaded guilty at Llanelli Magistrates Court on June 20 to dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, drink-driving, and driving without insurance. The magistrates declined jurisdiction of the case, and it was sent on to Swansea Crown Court. Edgar was remanded into custody, and will be sentenced on July 11.

Met Police chief 'frustrated' at planned protest to support Palestine Action - as government moves to ban the group

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley says he is "shocked and frustrated" at a planned protest in support of Palestine Action. The demonstration, due to take place in Westminster later, comes as the government moves to ban the group under anti-terror laws. Activists from Palestine Action hit the headlines last week after targeting RAF Brize Norton and damaging two military aircraft in a significant security breach. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will update MPs on the move to proscribe the organisation, which would make it a criminal offence to belong to or support it. Sir Mark said that - until this happens - the force has "no power in law" to prevent the protest from taking place, but lawbreakers will be "dealt with robustly". He added: "This is an organised extremist criminal group, whose proscription as terrorists is being actively considered. "Members are alleged to have caused millions of pounds of criminal damage, assaulted a police officer with a sledgehammer and last week claimed responsibility for breaking into an airbase and damaging aircraft. "Multiple members of the group are awaiting trial accused of serious offences." He added that - while the right to protest is essential - "actions in support of such a group go beyond what most would see as a legitimate protest". Read more UK news: Over the weekend, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said he could not rule out the possibility of a foreign power being behind Palestine Action. Any move to proscribe the group must be debated and approved by MPs and peers. Speaking to Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips on Sky News, former justice secretary Lord Charlie Falconer suggested that vandalising aircraft would not solely provide legal justification for such a move. Lord Falconer said: "I am not aware of what Palestine Action has done beyond the painting of things on the planes in Brize Norton, they may have done other things I didn't know. "But generally, that sort of demonstration wouldn't justify proscription so there must be something else that I don't know about." Palestine Action has staged a series of protests in recent months - spraying the offices of Allianz Insurance in London, and vandalising Donald Trump's golf course in Ayrshire.

Cumbrian officer wins award for community policing work

A Cumbrian police officer has been recognised for his commitment to community policing. A/Sgt Phil Hall, based in Eden, received the Neighbourhood Policing Award at the Cumbria Police Federation 2025 Recognition Awards for his work tackling criminality, and supporting vulnerable people. Over the past year, A/Sgt Hall worked with legal services on more than 30 breaches of anti-social behaviour injunctions involving four of Eden's most prolific offenders. His efforts in preparing court cases led to a custodial sentence, the first of its kind issued in Cumbria. He also worked with the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership to develop a community plan for managing speeding complaints and supported the integration of resettled communities in Eden by helping to produce guides on English law, key contacts, and support services. A/Sgt Hall said: "I'm really passionate about community policing. "It's not a glamorous job, but you are doing the stuff that matters to the public. "The disputes, the ongoing issues, the drug dealing. "The stuff that actually hurts the heart of the community. "That's what I enjoy getting to grips with – solving problems for people, working with partners and getting to meet the community." His focus on supporting victims was evident during a visit following a burglary in Stainton. When he discovered a blind resident felt unsafe and uncertain about identifying police officers, he worked with the force to introduce braille on warrant cards, an idea now set to be rolled out more widely. He also wrote a Visual Impairment Protocol which has been shared with chief officers. Recently, A/Sgt Hall used civil orders under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act to secure the closure of two nuisance premises, the first such orders issued in the Westmorland and Furness area. Ed Russell, chair of Cumbria Police Federation, said: "Phil works brilliantly with our partners and communities to solve the problems that really matter to them. "His determination to bring the anti-social behaviour injunction breaches to court gave victims and communities confidence in our robust policing approach, and he's always going that step further to make improvements to working practices. "He's a worthy winner of this award." A/Sgt Hall described the award as a surprise. He said: "It just came out of the blue." The Cumbria Police Federation Recognition Awards, in association with Axon, will take place on Wednesday, June 25. Additional sponsors include The Cumbria Police Group Insurance Scheme, Slater & Gordon, Uniform Mortgages, and others.
