Cumbrian officer wins award for community policing work

Yahoo4 hours ago

A Cumbrian police officer has been recognised for his commitment to community policing.
A/Sgt Phil Hall, based in Eden, received the Neighbourhood Policing Award at the Cumbria Police Federation 2025 Recognition Awards for his work tackling criminality, and supporting vulnerable people.
Over the past year, A/Sgt Hall worked with legal services on more than 30 breaches of anti-social behaviour injunctions involving four of Eden's most prolific offenders.
His efforts in preparing court cases led to a custodial sentence, the first of its kind issued in Cumbria.
He also worked with the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership to develop a community plan for managing speeding complaints and supported the integration of resettled communities in Eden by helping to produce guides on English law, key contacts, and support services.
A/Sgt Hall said: "I'm really passionate about community policing.
"It's not a glamorous job, but you are doing the stuff that matters to the public.
"The disputes, the ongoing issues, the drug dealing.
"The stuff that actually hurts the heart of the community.
"That's what I enjoy getting to grips with – solving problems for people, working with partners and getting to meet the community."
His focus on supporting victims was evident during a visit following a burglary in Stainton.
When he discovered a blind resident felt unsafe and uncertain about identifying police officers, he worked with the force to introduce braille on warrant cards, an idea now set to be rolled out more widely.
He also wrote a Visual Impairment Protocol which has been shared with chief officers.
Recently, A/Sgt Hall used civil orders under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act to secure the closure of two nuisance premises, the first such orders issued in the Westmorland and Furness area.
Ed Russell, chair of Cumbria Police Federation, said: "Phil works brilliantly with our partners and communities to solve the problems that really matter to them.
"His determination to bring the anti-social behaviour injunction breaches to court gave victims and communities confidence in our robust policing approach, and he's always going that step further to make improvements to working practices.
"He's a worthy winner of this award."
A/Sgt Hall described the award as a surprise.
He said: "It just came out of the blue."
The Cumbria Police Federation Recognition Awards, in association with Axon, will take place on Wednesday, June 25.
Additional sponsors include The Cumbria Police Group Insurance Scheme, Slater & Gordon, Uniform Mortgages, and others.

Police issue warning after four 'electrocuted' on funfair ride and three rushed to hospital

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has issued a warning after four people were 'electrocuted' on a funfair ride. Emergency services descended on a funfair in Wigan on Sunday, June 22, following reports of what the fire service described as a 'suspected electrocution' related to one of the rides at the busy funfair. Fire crews, police and paramedics were called to the Meadowbank Playing Fields, on Formby Avenue, during the Atherton Carnival, shortly before 3pm. Three were rushed to hospital for treatment, said the force. But police say the injuries are not thought to be serious. The rode was closed to the public while emergency services worked on the incident, and police said that there is 'nothing to suggest risk with any of the other attractions'. However, an inspector has warned that if anyone else has been at the funfair and has felt unwell, they should seek medical attention urgently. A force spokesperson said: "At around 2.30pm yesterday (22/06/25), officers attended a funfair on Formby Avenue, after four people reported injuries consistent with an electric shock from a ride. "Three of those individuals were taken to hospital for treatment, however the injuries are not thought to be serious. "The ride was closed to the public and a scene was established whilst emergency services dealt with the incident. There is currently nothing to suggest risk with any of the other attractions at the funfair." Inspector Neil Anson added: 'We worked closely with other emergency responders and the event's organisers to ensure everyone attending the funfair was safe and cared for. 'The risk that was posed was mitigated, and those impacted were taken to hospital for treatment. 'If anyone else had been at the funfair throughout the day and felt unwell, we advise you to seek medical attention immediately." Two fire crews attended the scene and made it safe, said Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, remaining in attendance for around 35 minutes. Atherton Carnival has been approached for comment.

Murder investigation launched after death of man found 'unresponsive'

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was found 'unresponsive' at a property. Three people - a man and two women - have been arrested. Police rushed to Peridot Close in Blackburn, Lancashire, at 3.40am on Sunday (June 22) after receiving a report from the ambulance service that a man was unresponsive. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man, who has now been named as 37-year-old Paul Scott, was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives said Mr Scott's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. DCI Simon Pritchard, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said: "First and foremost, my thoughts are with Paul's loved ones at this incredibly distressing time. Our investigation is very much in its early stages, but we have a team of dedicated detectives conducting enquiries. "Enquiries so far have led us to understand that this is an isolated incident, and it is being treated as such. "Whilst there is no threat to the wider public, you will see an increased police presence in the Peridot Close area, both as a reassurance, and as our officers carry out the investigation. "If you have any concerns, or any information or footage that could assist those enquiries, please do get in touch. It may be something that you think is insignificant, but I would encourage you to tell us anyway. "You can approach our officers as they carry out their duties or contact us by phone." Five more arrests in stabbing murder investigation

Police have made five more arrests in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man in Derby. Dale Martin, known as DJ, was pronounced dead in hospital after being attacked in Stenson Road at about 23:45 BST on Sunday 15 June. On Sunday, Derbyshire Police said a 24-year-old man and an 18-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder following Mr Martin's death. Detectives added a 25-year-old man and 17-year-old boy had also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and another man, 28, arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. All five remained in custody on Monday, police added. The latest arrests follow a number of others made during a police investigation into Mr Martin's death. Two 18-year-old men were arrested last week on suspicion of murder and an 18-year-old woman was arrested for assisting an offender. Two other men, aged 24 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the investigation. Three other men arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of murder remain in police custody. A woman and three men were also arrested on suspicion of affray and remain on bail, police added. Det Ch Insp Claudia Musson said: "We have made a significant number of arrests as our investigation has progressed. "Our inquiries are still very much ongoing and we are still appealing for members of the public to contact us with any information relevant to our inquiries." She said she wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen a Renault Megane in the Stenson Road area at the time of the stabbing. Detectives also said they would like to speak to anyone who saw e-bikes or mopeds being ridden in the Stenson Road and Sinfin area – particularly those with a rider and pillion passengers. Police said they were also investigating a linked incident outside The Oaklands pub in Oaklands Avenue, Littleover, at about 18:00 on Sunday 15 June when officers were called to reports of men carrying knives. No one was injured during that incident, police said. Follow BBC Derby on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Send your story ideas to eastmidsnews@ or via WhatsApp on 0808 100 2210.
