Titans stun Manly as Cherry-Evans fails to fire
Gold Coast captain Kieran Foran has outplayed his former Manly halves partner Daly Cherry-Evans to inspire one of the best Titans victories of all time.
The 28-8 win at Robina on Friday night was a hammer blow to the Sea Eagles, but even worse was the loss of star back-rower Haumole Olakau'atu with a dislocated right shoulder.
Manly choked, as they had done in their previous four away games when favourites against lowly-ranked opponents.
Gold Coast were decimated with 11 players unavailable, nine with injury and two in State of Origin camps.
Manly had no Origin representatives for the first time since 2015.
The expectation before the match was that Sea Eagles skipper Cherry-Evans would respond to his Queensland axing and lead his side to victory, particularly with star fullback Tom Trbojevic back in the side from injury.
It didn't pan out that way. Cherry-Evans, apart from one try assist, was underwhelming.
In fact it was Titans second-rower Beau Fermor, also dropped by the Maroons for game two, who sent a strong message to coach Billy Slater that he got it all wrong.
Fermor had a blinder, saving a try with a last ditched effort to stop Olakau'atu from scoring in a play where he was also injured.
Gold Coast stunned the visitors to lead 22-8 at halftime.
Manly centre Reuben Garrick crashed over early in his 150th game and added a second during the half, but the opening 40 minutes belonged to Foran.
The 34-year-old 2011 premiership winner wound back the clock and sent flying winger Allan Fitzgibbon over with a stellar cutout pass.
Foran and former Manly gun Brian Kelly sent speed demon Alofiana Khan-Pereira in for his 50th try in his 52nd match, the equal-quickest to the milestone in the NRL era.

Khan-Pereira was in again for his second after beating five Manly defenders.
When Titans fullback AJ Brimson carved through the defence to send half Jayden Campbell in under the sticks Manly were looking like a rabble.
Brimson has destroyed Manly in the past and he did so again in a brilliant display.
Train and trial second-rower Josh Patston made his NRL debut off the bench for the hosts while development list prop Tukimihia Simpkins, formerly with Wests Tigers, was on club debut.
Titans back-rower Chris Randall iced the win with a second-half try on the back of a monumental defensive effort.

Rams WR Davante Adams could move up these all-time NFL lists
Los Angeles Rams receiver Davante Adams heads into his 12th NFL season as one of the best players at his position. He's caught 957 receptions for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns in 164 career games. Adams will undoubtable add to those totals in L.A. with Matthew Stafford as his quarterback, even with Puka Nacua alongside him. Sean McVay loves his receivers and Adams might be the best one he's ever coached. It would certainly explain the coach's aggressive pursuit of Adams this offseason. Heading into the 2025 season, Adams ranks 20th in receptions, 33rd in receiving yards and 10th in receiving touchdowns. If he reaches his season-long averages, Adams will move up in all three categories. How far, though, remains up to him and the Rams. Adams needs just 14 receptions to move into 19th place ahead of Brandon Marshall. That seems like a lock unless Adams gets injured very early in the season. Adams also needs just 43 to break 1,000 career receptions, which only 15 other receivers have done. If Adams reaches his 89-catch average, though, he could rise to as high as No. 12 — Andre Johnson. And if Adams sets a career-high mark of at least 123 receptions (which he last did in 2020), he could push to as high as No. 8 ahead of Terrell Owens' 1078 receptions. Three active players who could shake up where Adams lands at the end of the season in career receptions: Keenan Allen (No. 18, 974), DeAndre Hopkins (No. 16, 984) and Travis Kelce (No. 14, 1004). All three are ahead of Adams and only Allen isn't on a roster at the moment. Adams can make a big leap in the all-time receiving yards record book. His 11,844 yards rank No. 33 in NFL history, and if he breaks his 1,077-yard seasonal average for his career, Adams would move up to No. 22. However, he'd once again be contending with Hopkins, who sits at No. 21 at 12,965. The other two active players on the list (Kelce at No. 28 and Mike Evans at No. 24) are less than 1,000 yards ahead of him, but would need very poor seasons to drop. The final major stat Adams could move up on the all-time list is receiving touchdowns. His 103 ranks No. 10 in league history, but there isn't a lot of room for improvement on that spot in 2025. Evans sits two touchdowns ahead of Adams at No. 9 with 105, while Tony Gonzalez's 111 career scores is No. 8. Adams averages nine touchdowns per season, meaning the highest he could climb is No. 8 if he can outpace Evans by at least two touchdowns. Adams would need 13 scores to move to No. 7, ahead of Antonio Games. He's only done that once in his career (2020 with the Packers). There is a lot of opportunity for Adams to eat in his Rams offense. And while the ultimate goal is a Super Bowl, moving up some record books is a nice consolation prize for the legendary pass-catcher.

Four-try Johnston closes on record but Storm pip Souths
Alex Johnston is on track to break the NRL's try-scoring record this season but his four tries were not enough to prevent Ryan Papenhuyzen icing Melbourne's extra-time defeat of South Sydney. Fullback Papenhuyzen sealed the Storm's 25-24 win with his second attempt at field goal in the 84th minute, booting the ball over from 20 metres out at Accor Stadium on Saturday night. Latrell Mitchell had done his utmost to seal a Souths victory on return from State of Origin duty, including kicking to Tyrone Munro for the try that equalised the game with only four minutes to play. But he missed a potentially game-winning sideline conversion thereafter before his only field goal attempt sailed wide from 45 metres out. An error-prone Storm moved to extra time, sealing victory and jumping the Warriors into third spot on the ladder. Mitchell threw cut-out passes down the left side for Johnston's 203rd, 204th and 205th career tries. Johnston then intercepted a Jahrome Hughes pass for his fourth try of the night, moving only six behind the benchmark of 212 that Ken Irvine set in 1973. Knights score late to sink Dolphins as Bostock injured
Newcastle forward Brodie Jones scored in the final minute to sink the injury-hit Dolphins 26-20 in a thriller in Perth and keep the Knights' finals hopes alive. Jones chased through a bomb and showed great determination to plant the ball down after Knights captain Kalyn Ponga had set up two tries in a brilliant display. The Knights lost Sharpe to an HIA and then centre Dane Gagai was sin-binned for a professional foul in the second half. Katoa combined with versatile Kurt Donoghoe to put winger Jamayne Isaako over in the corner. The Dolphins turned it on from their own tryline to take the lead with centre Herbie Farnworth igniting a move that was finished by Tabuai-Fidow.
