The Florida Panthers closed out the Edmonton Oilers with a dominant 5–1 victory in Game 6 on Tuesday night, securing their second consecutive Stanley Cup on home ice against the same team they already beat last season.

Florida jumped out early, scored twice in the first period, and never looked back. The Oilers were limited to a meager and meaningless goal with less than five minutes left in regulation and the score 5-0 in favor of the Panthers.
While the result brought another painful ending for Edmonton, captain Connor McDavid pushed back on any notion that his team quit in the deciding game.
"We lost to a really good team," McDavid said. "Nobody quit, nobody threw the towel in, but they're a heck of a team. They're back-to-back Stanley Cup champions for a reason."
Sam Reinhart scored four goals for the Panthers, including two empty-netters, while Matthew Tkachuk added one in the opening frame.

The Oilers didn't get on the board until Vasily Podkolzin scored with just over four minutes left. McDavid was left off the board in Tuesday's game and held to just one goal and six assists in the series.
"Their forecheck was great. They tilted the rink. They were able to stay on top of us all over the place," McDavid said. "Never really able to generate any momentum up the ice."

McDavid, even after another crushing finals loss, maintained belief in the group and was already looking forward to making another deep run next season.
"Still a lot of confidence and belief," McDavid said. "I don't think people thought we were going to make it this far. We obviously believed. Came up just short again."

With their second consecutive loss, the Oilers became the first team since the 1977-78 Boston Bruins to lose back-to-back finals.

Phillies place Aaron Nola on 60-day IL, call up Buddy Kennedy and send Weston Wilson to Triple-A

MIAMI — The Philadelphia Phillies moved right-hander Aaron Nola to the 60-day injured list on Thursday, a week after he injured his ribcage while trying to work himself back from a sprained right ankle. Nola had been out since early May with the ankle injury. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto that wiped out a planned session against live batters, and an MRI showed a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Nola, who is in the second season of a seven-year, $172 million contract , is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies, making six straight opening day starts from 2018-23. He was 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts this year before injuring his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills. The Phillies selected the contract of infielder Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins and optioned infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson to the IronPigs. Kennedy, 26, is batting .283 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 61 games for Lehigh Valley this season and was the International League Player of the Month for May. In 54 major league games over three seasons with the Diamondbacks, Tigers and Phillies, he has batted .203 with two homers and 19 RBIs. Wilson batted .194 with one home run and 4 RBIs in 22 games for the Phillies this season. ___ AP MLB:

Stars' Matt Duchene signs four-year deal; other players on free agency list

Stars' Matt Duchene signs four-year deal; other players on free agency list Show Caption Hide Caption Florida Panthers capture second straight Stanley Cup The Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers to win their second-straight Stanley Cup. Sports Pulse NHL general managers are beating the deadline and getting their pending free agents re-signed before the July 1 start of free agency. The Dallas Stars were the latest, getting forward Matt Duchene, 34, re-signed to a four-year, $18 million contract on June 19. He led the Stars with 82 points in 82 games and set a career best with 52 assists. The Chicago Blackhawks had signed leading goal scorer Ryan Donato to a four-year, $16 million contract on June 18. Duchene's four-year contract is a change from his recent deals, though it is team-friendly. After the Nashville Predators bought him out in 2023, he signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Stars and had a 65-point season. He signed another one-year, $3 million deal before averaging a point a game last season. 'As our team's leading scorer last season, he helped to solidify our forward group while also providing invaluable leadership off the ice and in the community," general manager Jim Nill said. "The fit with Matt and our team has been seamless from the start, and we're looking forward to continuing to pursue our shared goal of bringing a championship to Dallas." Edmonton Oilers forward Trent Frederic, a trade deadline acquisition, could be getting closer to a deal. "We're talking, my agent's talking," he said during the Oilers' end-of-season media availability. "Hopefully, something will get done here." The New York Islanders' Kyle Palmieri and Tampa Bay Lightning's Yanni Gourde re-signed earlier. But there are plenty of potential unrestricted free agents still out there, including from the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Pro wrestling legend Bubba Ray Dudley has high praise for Zena Sterling as he previews 'WWE LFG' Season 2

Pro wrestling legend Bubba Ray Dudley will return to "WWE Legends & Future Greats" for the second season of competition as the next crop of talent looks to earn an NXT contract. Dudley, one half of the famed pro wrestling tag team the Dudley Boyz, told Fox News Digital ahead of the start of the second season there will be mix of those who came up short in the first season and new faces in Season 2. He said he believed the intensity level for those competitors returning from Season 1 will be turned up a notch. "I think fans can expect the same from Season 1 in Season 2 of 'LFG' only with the level of seriousness a lot higher," he said. "I think a lot of the returning 'future greats' from Season 1 realized how serious this show really is and how big the competition really is and what it truly means." Dudley pointed to the impact Jasper Troy has made on the NXT roster almost immediately. Troy stepped up to challenge NXT champion Oba Femi and became one of only a few opponents Femi looked to struggle against. "Jasper didn't win the match, but he certainly caught the eye of wrestling fans all over the world. Definitely got the WWE Universe to sit up and take notice about who he was," Dudley said. "Jasper Troy was throwing Oba Femi around the ring like no other competitor ever has. "So, to get the opportunity to go through 'LFG' to get that contract, put on TV, be put in situations where you can face Oba Femi, huge deal. And I think that the people from Season 1 returning know that I believe it is a much more serious season with the stakes. Even though the stakes are the same, the level of intensity are kicked up." Zena Sterling was one of Dudley's students from Season 1 who will compete in Season 2. She came up just short of earning an NXT contract, losing in the Season 1 finale to Tyra Mae Steele. An injury hampered Sterling at the end. Dudley had high hopes for her with Season 2 about to begin. "I believe Zena Sterling is the most popular future great coming out of Season 1. Tyra Mae Steele won the contract, but everyone was talking about Zena," Dudley said. "Zena did a phenomenal job on Season 1 maximizing all of her television time. Zena does a phenomenal job maximizing her social media, and, in my opinion, Zena should have won Season 1. "A knee injury at the absolute worst, worst time just days before the finals at Madison Square Garden knocked her down to 50%. Even at 50%, it was a struggle for Shawn Michaels to give that contract to Tyra. "WWE NXT, they know what they had with Zena Sterling, and Zena is coming into Season 2 on a mission and that mission is to win. I don't speak as highly as I do about Zena just because she is on my team. I would speak just as highly if she was on Booker's team or Michelle McCool's team or Undertaker's team. This girl has it all. She has the 'it' factor, Zena is going to be a big deal in the WWE and a force to be reckoned with in the women's division one day." Dudley named a few others fans should look out for, including men's Season 1 runner-up Shiloh Hill, Haze Jameson, Elijah Holyfield, Bayley Humphrey, Sirena Linton and Dani Raye. He told Fox News Digital he was proud to have the ability to mold the next generation of superstars and hoped the 16 competitors will take a step forward and compete for a contract in WWE. "WWE Legends & Future Greats" Season 2 debuts Sunday on A&E at 10 p.m. ET. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
