Spurs reach agreement with Brentford on Frank as coach

Tottenham have reached an agreement with Brentford to make Thomas Frank their next head coach, the PA news agency understands.
Spurs quickly set their sights on Frank after Ange Postecoglou was sacked last week – only 16 days after he secured Europa League success – and made an official approach to Brentford on Monday.
Discussions between Tottenham and Brentford initially centred on Frank's current terms at the west London club, which were set to run until the summer of 2027 and contained a release clause reportedly in the region of £10 million ($13.6 million).
Further talks were required over which backroom staff Frank would take to Spurs but, after days of negotiations, a deal was struck with Brentford on Thursday, PA understands.
Highly-rated Brentford first-team coach Justin Cochrane is set to follow Frank to Tottenham and in the process return to the club where he started his coaching journey.
London-born Cochrane has been part of Frank's backroom staff since 2022, after he initially developed as a coach in Spurs' youth-team before a spell at Manchester United.
Cochrane, 43, has earned a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in England and earlier this year joined Thomas Tuchel's coaching staff for the national team alongside his role at Brentford under Frank.
Frank would take over a Spurs side which won a trophy for the first time since 2008 with victory in the Europa League final last month but finished 17th in the Premier League.
The ex-Brondby boss has transformed Brentford during his seven-year spell in charge, with promotion from the Championship in 2021 followed by him establishing the club as a Premier League regular despite a modest budget.
Christian Eriksen, who played under Frank at Brentford and starred during a seven-year spell at Spurs, backed his compatriot to be a success at his former club.
'I think he is the right coach for Tottenham,' Eriksen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet.
'I have had Thomas at various times and I think he is the perfect match for Tottenham, and it would be great if Thomas takes on that challenge.
'His personality, his way of playing and his way of being. And the club considering where they were last season - they won a trophy of course - but they are in the process of building something up, and I am sure that Thomas is a good man to bring in.'

Klopp congratulates Liverpool on $173mn Wirtz deal: ‘It's going to be great'
DPA Berlin Jurgen Klopp has congratulated his former club Liverpool on the high-profile signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz. 'This is going to be absolutely fantastic, I'm sure of it,' the German said in an interview with RTL/ntv on Saturday. The English champions already had 'a fantastic team' last season under his successor Arne Slot, Klopp said. 'It's very hard to strengthen a team when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed it. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz. I'm looking forward to seeing it. It's going to be great.' Liverpool have signed the 22-year-old from Bundesliga runners-up Bayer Leverkusen, reportedly paying up to €150 million ($173 million) including bonus payments. The playmaker has signed a long-term contract. Wirtz is Liverpool's second signing of the summer, following close friend and Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong to Anfield, and with the Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvilli joining next month. Leverkusen ‘proud' as they say farewell to Wirtz
dpa Berlin Bayer Leverkusen tried to look on the bright side and remember their achievements together after Florian Wirtz completed his move to Liverpool. The playmaker made his debut for the Germans aged 17 and went on to win a league and cup double with the club in 2024. An initial $134.7 million fee plus add-ons cushioned the blow for Leverkusen as the Germany international chose to test himself with the Premier League champions. Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro said in a statement late on Friday: 'Florian Wirtz developed from a very promising talent into a world-class player here with us. We are very proud of the path he has taken at Bayer 04. 'Now we have to let him go. We will miss Florian but part of him will always be connected to Bayer 04. His sporting ability and his irrepressible commitment are an example and inspiration to us to show our full ambition to establish Bayer 04 at the top of German football and always strive to achieve the maximum success.' Sporting director Simon Rolfes said the club had a special relationship with the attacking midfielder. 'Florian's departure is associated with lots of emotions for the whole club and also for me personally. He came to us as a 16-year-old and he built up close and warm relations with many people at the club over the years,' Rolfes remarked. 'Through his attitude, his passion and his unconditional desire to win he not only motivated and inspired his team-mates on the pitch but also the staff in the immediate vicinity of the team and throughout the club.
