Spurs Linked as Suitor for Blockbuster Trade With Celtics
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Antonio Spurs currently hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They seem comfortable with keeping the pick, likely targeting Rutgers standout Dylan Harper, but trade rumors have been surrounding the franchise. Kevin Durant has been a popular name linked to the Spurs in the rumor mill. It has been reported that San Antonio is one of the teams Durant would like to be traded to. He clearly has interest in playing alongside of Victor Wembanyama. That pairing could put the Spurs on the map as a possible contender in the Western Conference. Jaylen Brown #7 of the Boston Celtics reacts to missing a shot during the first quarter in Game One of the Eastern Conference Second Round Playoffs against the Cleveland Cavaliers at TD Garden on May 07, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. More Photo byNow, another name has been suggested as a potential trade target for San Antonio. This player would require the Spurs pulling off a blockbuster trade with the Boston Celtics. Read more: Pacers' TJ McConnell Makes Massive NBA Finals History Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix believes that Jaylen Brown would be a perfect fit for San Antonio. However, in order to get Brown, the Spurs would have to offer a very aggressive trade package. "Jaylen Brown is interesting," Mannix said. "If he's in play, that's someone I think San Antonio will look at and will go after." Mannix continued forward, revealing more of his thoughts about San Antonio and Brown being an ideal fit. "That's someone, I think if you're the Spurs, you're willing to give up the No. 2 overall pick," he said. "Jaylen Brown — if he's available, again, we don't know if he's available yet, but if he's available — I would expect San Antonio to be among the teams to make a run at him." Brown would be a much better target than Durant if the Spurs were going to trade the No. 2 pick. He would be a long-term addition and is just 28 years old. During the 2024-25 NBA season with Boston, Brown played in 63 games. He averaged 22.2 points per game to go along with 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals, while shooting 46.3 percent from the floor and 32.4 percent from three-point range. It's possible that San Antonio will just stick at No. 2 and bring in Harper or another high-level rookie. There is no rush for the Spurs, as they have a long window open with Wembanyama leading the charge. Expect to hear San Antonio continually mentioned in trade rumors. Brown is an intriguing option, but there is no guarantee that the Celtics will make him available or that the Spurs would have interest in trading for him. Why Spurs trading for Kevin Durant makes more sense than Giannis Antetokounmpo
The post Why Spurs trading for Kevin Durant makes more sense than Giannis Antetokounmpo appeared first on ClutchPoints. Though the latest reports indicate that the most serious suitors for Kevin Durant don't include the San Antonio Spurs, nothing is yet set in stone. KD will be 37 years old by the time next NBA season starts. He's looking for one last long-term contract, and if he's traded soon, he'd be eligible for a two-year contract extension in early July that would be worth as much as $122 million. He's set to make more than $54 and a half million next season. That's the situation in front of the Silver and Black, who are also reportedly interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo. Advertisement Though they've positioned themselves well in every facet of roster building – including within the salary cap – those numbers and what it would take to get an aging star may not seem ideal. Specifics matter, though. As the Spurs look at all options, including any that would land the Greek Freak, acquiring Kevin Durant is the way to go. Within limits. Kevin Durant can still score at a high level In 62 games this past season, Durant averaged more than 26 and a half points per game. For context, in a year that continued his all-world trajectory, Victor Wembanyama scored 24.3 per contest. De'Aaron Fox's career high season scoring average is 26.6. And while Wemby's impact goes well beyond scoring, it's clear that KD would still provide the Spurs with an incredible scoring punch. Advertisement For their shortcomings – and this Spurs roster has several – at the end of the day, there is none greater than their lack of scoring threats. Wemby is not yet the offensive dynamo he will become. Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle is only 20. For his offensive prowess, Fox is finding his way in San Antonio. Acquired in February via midseason trade, the 2023 All-Star has played in only 17 games for the Silver and Black. The reality of adding Durant Unlike a potential deal for Antetokounmpo, the Spurs shouldn't have to part with Castle to get Durant. The Phoenix Suns can certainly make that request – and probably did – but it would be hard to blame San Antonio for not going along, given where KD and Castle are in their careers. The Spurs may not have to give up the second-round pick in this summer's draft either. Perhaps a non-starter for Phoenix, consider the same difference as Castle, given that Dylan Harper projects as a star. So, herein lies the question: could the Silver and Black possibly add Durant to Wembanyama, Fox, Castle, and the presumed number two pick, Dylan Harper? Over the last couple of years, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson have been considered a part of the Spurs future plans. As of now, they still are. But their value has been, at best, blurred by the addition of Fox, the ascension of Castle and the possibility of Harper. Advertisement Durant makes the Spurs better immediately. By adding him and keeping Harper and drafting Castle, it also makes them better in the long term. It's certainly worth the move if they can pull it off. Either way, it's a much easier call than what it would take to get Antetokounmpo. Junior Spurs defeat Black Medal FC at KaBokweni Stadium
Junior Spurs FC claimed all the spoils with a 2-1 victory over Black Medal FC in the Safa Ehlanzeni U20 League at KaBokweni Stadium on Saturday, June 14. This marks Medal's second consecutive defeat in the league, following their 5-0 loss to TS Galaxy Academy. In a thrilling start, both teams fought for dominance in the opening 15 minutes. Medal's defence was breached when Sibusiso Metane scored in the 18th minute, assisted by Tsepiso Mokoena of Spurs. Spurs continued to press for a second goal, but their well-constructed attack was denied by Medal's goalkeeper, Ayanda Khumalo, in the 27th minute. Before the half-time break, Medal's Phiwokuhle Mamba and Samkelo Mazibuko missed two clear chances to level the score. At the break, Spurs led 1-0. Mcallen Nkosi of Medal equalised in the 46th minute, finishing a pass from Mamba after Spurs' Simphiwe Zulu committed a reckless foul just outside the box. ALSO READ: TS Galaxy Queens maintain at-home winning streak With the score level at 1-1 by the 60th minute, Medal pushed forward in search of a second goal, but Spurs countered effectively, using their wingers to launch attacks and win several corners. In the 71st minute, Lindelani Silinda restored Spurs' lead with a well-worked goal, assisted by Vuyo Thwala. The move followed a corner delivered by Ace Mkhwatshwa, bringing the score to 2-1. The first yellow card of the game was shown to Mamba for time-wasting after he kicked the ball out of play following the referee's whistle. The second caution was issued to Lindelani Sifunda of Medal for fouling a Spurs player just outside their own box. The match ended 2-1 in favour of Junior Spurs FC. 'It is a heart-breaking loss, I did not expect it. We were at home in front of our fans, but, at the end of the day, we fell short 2-1. We did not score goals with the chances we made. We have to go back to training and organise the forwards and strikers to improve and be more clinical,' said Sibiya. ALSO READ: IN PHOTOS: Kruger United FC bags double wins at KaNyamazane Stadium Junior Spurs FC's coach, Xolani Sikhode, said he opted for five defenders to ensure they secured the three points away from home. 'I want to tell the truth – I'm disappointed in the boys, even though they won. They conceded a soft goal, and we were supposed to score a lot more. I used that defence because I didn't want to concede. Looking at our opponents, they made more chances than we did,' said Sikhode. Nets, Pelicans interested in moving up, could Sixers move No. 3 pick?
The Philadelphia 76ers will have a lot of eyes on them as they head into the 2025 NBA draft. Owners of the No. 3 pick, there is a lot of talk about the Sixers looking to trade down either for financial implications or to acquire more assets. The Sixers have plenty of avenues to go down as they look to build their roster. They can either make a selection at No. 3 with Baylor's VJ Edgecombe, Rutgers' Ace Bailey, Duke's Kon Knueppel, or others, or they can trade down to get more assets and create more cap space. Advertisement As Philadelphia heads into the draft, there will be a lot of options, but two teams have reportedly reached out to the Sixers--and the San Antonio Spurs--in an effort to trade up. Those two teams are the Brooklyn Nets and the New Orleans Pelicans, per Yahoo! Sports: The Spurs hold the second pick. The Sixers are third. San Antonio and Philly aren't shopping their picks per se, but they're listening. League sources say New Orleans (seventh) and Brooklyn (eighth) have reached out about moving up. The Sixers have maintained publicly that they intend on making a selection at No. 3 which makes a lot of sense when considering the potential talents they can have. Edgecombe or Bailey would be a great addition to the roster. However, the Sixers trading down would potentially create more cap space and it would give them some more assets. In terms of what a framework of a deal would look like, the Pelicans have the No. 7 pick and would likely have to include Herb Jones in the deal. The Sixers would likely send Kelly Oubre Jr. and Andre Drummond and the No. 3 pick to New Orleans. In terms of the Nets, they would likely send a package centered around the No. 8 pick and Cam Johnson, while Philadelphia sends the Oubre, Drummond, No. 3 package to Brooklyn. In both instances, the Sixers get a win-now player as well as draft assets. Either way, the Sixers would be able to achieve their goal of adding younger pieces to the roster with the picks they acquire and Jones and Johnson are win-now players who can help win a title right now. Philadelphia will be looking to remain title contenders while also adding an injection of youth to the roster. Those trades are helpful in both goals. Thomas Frank facing major dilemma over Tottenham players' futures including Son Heung-min and £60m Richarlison
DOMINIC SOLANKE will feel ace after hearing the comments of his new boss Thomas Frank. Frank, snapped playing table-tennis at Tottenham's training ground yesterday, spoke glowingly of the England striker during his first interview. 6 6 6 He served up compliments to other players too — though keen-eared fans also noted those the Dane did NOT mention. Frank, 51, is only just through the door and will take time assessing his current squad with 2½ weeks until players return for pre-season. But then he must decide who is in and who is out as he bids to turn Spurs into a smash hit for the new Premier League campaign . . . GOALKEEPER FRANK is unlikely to bring in or ship out any of his main stoppers. There was some talk of AC Milan being interested in Guglielmo Vicario should Mike Maignan leave, but Spurs sources dismissed the prospect of selling the Italian, 28. The biggest question mark will be whether he sticks with Vicario as his first choice or if Antonin Kinsky, 22, signed from Slavia Prague for £12.5million in January, can convince him a swap is needed. Long-serving back-up Brandon Austin remains third choice while Alfie Whiteman leaves this month and highly-rated Josh Keeley could go out on loan again after spending last season at Leyton Orient. DEFENCE QUESTIONS remain over the future of Cristian Romero, one of those stars not named by Frank. JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS The Argentine World Cup winner, 27, appeared to be agitating for a move last season, even speaking of his desire to play in LaLiga during a candid interview. Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone would love to sign him but a proposed £60million price tag could be prohibitive for a player who has two years left on his contract. Bryan Mbeumo give his reaction to Thomas Frank becoming Tottenham manager 6 Fans will also demand a quality replacement if Romero goes. Spurs offered £70m for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in January and the England man would likely be a target again. One who may benefit either way is Radu Dragusin, who met Frank this week along with the club's other injured players. The Romanian, 23, damaged knee ligaments in February and never seemed to fit into Ange Postecoglou's style. But Frank has a history of getting the best out of no-nonsense centre-backs. Sergio Reguilon is out on a free transfer, leaving Spurs with only three recognised full-backs — if you do not count the versatile Ben Davies. So another is likely to be required. MIDFIELD FRANK spoke of trying to get the best out of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, so both seem to be part of his plans. Spurs hope to tie down the Uruguayan to a new contract with only a year left. But if that does not happen an exit would not be ruled out amid interest from Atletico. Yves Bissouma also has only 12 months remaining and a few weeks ago fans would have expected the Malian, 28, to be sold given how far down the pecking order he fell under Postecoglou. But he played a pivotal role in the Europa League win over Manchester United and, with Frank often favouring two holding midfielders, his future is harder to call. Spurs want the Dane to develop their young talent, including teenagers Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. But another holding midfielder, perhaps with more experience, could be on Frank's shopping list. ATTACK 'DOMINIC SOLANKE, I'm a big fan of him in terms of his abilities. I'm sure we'll make him score a lot of goals.' So said Frank of Spurs' £65m striker, who was always going to be central to his approach. But who backs up the England man and plays wide? Spurs have been open to selling Richarlison, 28, for a while now but, with his injury record and two years left on his deal, they might struggle to get an offer for the Brazilian that they will find acceptable. There is serious interest in Bryan Mbeumo, 25, who scored 20 Prem goals for Frank's Brentford last term — but Manchester United are also keen. Mathys Tel, 20, has signed permanently after his spell on loan from Bayern Munich but another speedy wideman may be targeted given how Frank likes his teams to break at pace. Then there is captain Son Heung-min, who is open to leaving after marking ten years at the club by lifting a trophy. Son turns 33 next month, is wanted by Saudi clubs, as well as former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce and also has only a year left on his contract. But his unique commercial value means Spurs will not let him go on the cheap — and almost certainly not until after the club's tour to South Korea at the start of August.
