Ravens' Odafe Oweh Gaining Weight Ahead of Contract Year

The Baltimore Ravens have one of the league's elite rosters, and that's in large part due to a first-round hot streak in recent seasons. Between safety Kyle Hamilton, receiver Zay Flowers, center Tyler Linderbaum, and corner Nate Wiggins, there is no shortage of star power coming from the first day of the Ravens' recent drafts.

Among them is edge rusher Odafe Oweh, who hasn't quite reached the peaks of his peers but has promising talent nonetheless. Coming off a 10-sack season and entering a contract year, Oweh is emerging as a difference-maker along the edge for Baltimore.
With that said, Oweh has been deployed in a one-dimensional role to this point. He's played nearly three times as many snaps against the pass as the run. Now, Oweh is aiming to close that gap.
The Ravens' edge rusher is bulking up for a pivotal 2025 season, telling the team's website that he gained 20 pounds of muscle.
"[It will help in stopping] the run," Oweh said to Ryan Mink and Justin Robertson. "And then obviously, the top of my rush, not being able to be pushed off the point, digging out the rip. And then obviously [with] power as well."

Becoming more powerful could be what takes Oweh to the next level. More mass makes him harder to move, but it also makes his speed even more of a weapon, making his speed-to-power that much more impactful.
Oweh has a lot to gain from becoming a complete player. With free agency looming on the other side of his 2025 campaign, hitting the market on a good note, with elite athleticism and first-round pedigree to boot, he stands to cash in. Yet, Oweh claims he was motivated by his 2024 campaign.
"I didn't have the outing I wanted, so I thought a lot of that had to do with my weight and being able to be stout in certain positions," Oweh said. "So, as soon as the season was done, I went to Miami, started eating, lifting and then gaining weight, basically."
Coming off the best season of his career, Oweh has high hopes for 2025. With Baltimore gearing up for a deep playoff run, each step could prove impactful. The edge rusher joked that the progress didn't come without sacrifice.

"It actually wasn't good food. It was a lot of nasty meal prep. But it did the job."

Orioles catcher Maverick Handley leaves game after collision with Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr.

NEW YORK (AP) — Baltimore Orioles backup catcher Maverick Handley left Sunday's game against the New York Yankees after being knocked over in a collision at the plate with Jazz Chisholm Jr. With Baltimore ahead 2-0, Chisholm hit a two-out double off Dean Kremer and went home on DJ LeMahieu's single to left. Colton Cowser's throw was up the third-base line. Handley moved to his left for the throw, arriving for the ball at the same time as Chisholm, who tried to veer to the inside to avoid contact. Chisholm, whose left cleat had come off as he speeded down the line, smacked into Handley, fell past the plate and had to come back to touch it. Handley, a 27-year-old who debuted in April, got up slowly and was removed after a discussion with interim manager Tony Masolino and head athletic trainer Scott Barringer. Baltimore replaced Handley with former Yankees player Gary Sánchez. Baltimore already is without All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman, who strained his left oblique and is on the injured list for the first time in his major league career.

Sunday morning Orioles game thread: at Yankees, 11:35 AM

The Orioles won't have to linger too long on yesterday's demoralizing loss to the Yankees. They're back in action before lunchtime today, squaring off in the 11:35 rubber game airing on Roku TV. It's the Orioles' first morning game of the season but not their last; they'll play another 11:35 game in Atlanta two weeks from today. Today's result will decide not only a series win or loss against the Yankees, but also whether the O's emerge from their seven-game AL East road trip with a winning record. There'd be some measure of pride for the Orioles in surviving a tough trip with their head above water, not that a bunch of 4-3 weeks are going to get them back into the postseason race. Advertisement For that to happen, the O's will need a better performance from their starting pitcher. Tomoyuki Sugano and Zach Eflin both suffered miserable, abbreviated outings in the first two games against the Yankees, with Sugano chased in the fourth inning and Eflin after just three. It's up to Dean Kremer to reverse that trend. This is his first start of the year against the Yankees but he faced them six times in the previous two seasons, going 3-0 with a 3.58 ERA. Kremer, like most pitchers, has had trouble getting Aaron Judge out. The Yankee slugger has crushed four home runs in just 15 career at-bats against Kremer. Maybe just walk him? Because the Orioles had to burn through so much of the bullpen in the previous two games, they made a somewhat surprising roster move to bring in a fresh arm, optioning Yenner Cano to Triple-A Norfolk and recalling Yaramil Hiraldo. Cano, as one of the few relievers with options, was the victim of a roster crunch, though it's not as if he's pitched particularly well this year. He has a 4.73 ERA and lately has been relegated to middle relief or mop-up outings. The former All-Star set-up man will try to regain his form in the minors, where he hasn't pitched since April 2023. Hiraldo, who has had four days off since his last appearance for Norfolk, could potentially pitch multiple innings of relief if needed. The Orioles' lineup looks less intimidating without Adley Rutschman, who went on the IL yesterday, and Jordan Westburg, who left Saturday's game with a sprained hand and might not be available today. But I've certainly seen weaker-looking O's lineups that resulted in victory — including the opener of this series two days ago — so we'll find out what happens.
