World's 1st multi-adaptive safety belt unveiled by Volvo

At the forefront of automotive safety since its genesis, Volvo has unveiled the world's first multi-adaptive safety belt, which will feature in the forthcoming Volvo EX60.

Set to debut with the fresh-faced EX60 SUV in 2026, Volvo Cars has a new multi-adaptive safety belt, which it says marks a significant evolution of the classic three-point belt the brand first introduced in 1959. This is the life-saving automotive safety invention credited with saving over a million lives globally.
This next-generation safety belt uses real-time data from the car's technologically advanced network of interior and exterior sensors to optimise protection for every person in the cabin. It adapts not only to the specific crash scenario but also to the unique physical profile of the occupant, taking into account factors such as height, weight, body shape and seating position. In practice, this means that a larger adult involved in a high-speed collision would receive a stronger belt load setting to help minimise the risk of head injury, while a smaller occupant in a lower-impact crash would receive a gentler setting to reduce the chance of rib fractures.

Volvo has increased the number of available load-limiting profiles from three to 11, which it adds, enhances the belt's ability to modulate force. Unlike traditional systems, this multi-adaptive safety belt can dynamically alter its response by processing information such as crash direction, vehicle speed and passenger posture in less than the blink of an eye. The system then selects the optimal belt setting to match the scenario. Living in a digital age, Volvo says this adaptive approach is made even more powerful through over-the-air software updates.
The Swedish automaker continues to collect crash data and refine its algorithms, the multi-adaptive belt will be able to improve over time, enhancing both predictive accuracy and real-world performance. It forms part of a wider safety ecosystem that integrates with the vehicle's airbags, occupant detection systems and advanced driver assistance features, working together to reduce injury risk.

'Volvo's world-first multi-adaptive safety belt is another milestone in our long safety journey and a great example of how we leverage real-time data to help save lives,' says Åsa Haglund, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre. 'It represents a major upgrade to the modern three-point safety belt, which has been our cornerstone for over 60 years.'
All of the aforementioned data is underpinned by Volvo's comprehensive crash database, which includes information from more than 80 000 real-life accidents. This data-driven foundation allows the company to design systems that go beyond regulatory standards and better reflect the complexities of everyday driving scenarios. As expected, the new belt has undergone extensive development and crash testing at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the EX30 Cross Country will arrive locally in the third quarter of 2025. Built on the standard model, this will serve as a tougher, more rugged counterpart. Volvo will also offer accessories like mudflaps, a roof basket, and a load carrier for added versatility. The 69kWh battery pack offers a claimed WLTP range of 427km. Fast-charging capability means a 10 to 80% top-up takes just 26 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. 'The EX30 Cross Country builds on everything people love about the EX30, adding rugged capability and distinctive design details,' said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's head of marketing and communications. 'It's a refined, all-electric SUV that feels equally at home on gravel roads or in the city, offering South Africans a practical way to go further with confidence.' The arrival of the EX30 Cross Country highlights Volvo's ongoing shift to electrification, with the brand aiming for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up nearly all global sales by 2030. JAC unveils limited-edition T9 Hunter bakkie for SA market only

JAC Motors South Africa has just unveiled a new, limited-edition version of its T9 Hunter bakkie for the local market following a record-breaking endurance test at Gerotek. Not so long ago, Chinese automaker JAC embarked on setting a new record, involving a gruelling 24-hour endurance challenge, where the T9 bakkie was pushed far beyond typical road limits. The challenge, held at the Gerotek Testing Facility in Pretoria, saw a T9 2l CTi cover 4 084 km at an average speed of 170.1km/h over the period. This distance broke the previous 15-year-old record for commercial vehicles held by Isuzu. To celebrate this accomplishment, JAC is producing an exclusive run of only 24 T9 Hunter units. Each of these special bakkies will be individually numbered and will receive unique upgrades over the standard T9, including enhanced performance and comfort features. While full details are still under wraps, this limited production run is clearly designed to offer buyers a tangible piece of the T9's track success. Under the bonnet, the T9 Hunter retains the potent powertrain used in the record-breaking test (which is a stock, factory unit). This means a 2l intercooled turbo-diesel engine that generates 144kW of power and 487N.m of torque. Power is delivered through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Indeed, T9 sales have seen a nearly 28% increase from January to May 2025 compared with the same period last year, while the popular T8 has surged by a massive 140%. The remainder of 2025 will see the brand introduce the T9 Plug-in Hybrid, marking its entry into the electrified bakkie market. This will be followed by the arrival of the T6 single-cab, catering to a more utility-focused segment. Additionally, engine updates are planned for both the T8 and X200 models, promising improved performance and efficiency across the lineup. Volvo adds Abbey Road Studios sound mode to EX90

Volvo is rolling out a new Abbey Road Studios Mode to its EX90 electric SUV, offering drivers the ability to recreate the acoustics of the famous London recording studio where acts such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Oasis and Massive Attack laid down some of their finest work. Available to owners with the optional Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system fitted to their vehicles, the feature will be delivered free of charge via an over-the-air software update in the coming weeks. Developed in collaboration with Bowers & Wilkins and Abbey Road Studios, the mode uses sound profiles inspired by the studio's acoustics and mixing equipment. These include a "Producer Mode" that allows users to adjust the stereo sound stage, tonal quality and overall ambience, much like an audio engineer would behind a mixing desk.
