IPL 2025: LSG skipper Pant fined for slow over rate third time this season

In a season marked by challenges, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant has been fined ₹30 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during his team's final IPL 2025 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. This penalty marks LSG's third over-rate offence of the season, resulting in the maximum fine imposed on a captain under the IPL's Code of Conduct. The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each fined ₹12 lakh or 50 per cent of their match fees, whichever is lesser. Despite Pant's valiant unbeaten 118 off 61 balls, LSG succumbed to RCB's formidable chase, concluding their season with a disappointing loss.
Repeated offences lead to maximum penalty
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Pant was penalised ₹30 lakh as this was LSG's third violation under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences. The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each fined ₹12 lakh or 50 per cent of their match fees, whichever is lesser. This stringent enforcement underscores the IPL's commitment to maintaining match timings and ensuring fair play.
Pant's heroics overshadowed by team's defeat
Despite Pant's scintillating unbeaten 118 off 61 balls, LSG fell short as RCB chased down the 228-run target with six wickets in hand and eight balls to spare. RCB's victory secured their spot in Qualifier 1, while LSG concluded their season with a disappointing loss. Pant's performance was a silver lining in an otherwise challenging season for LSG, highlighting his resilience and determination.
Recurring over-rate issues plague LSG
This isn't the first time LSG has faced penalties for slow over rates this season. Earlier, Pant was fined ₹12 lakh and ₹24 lakh for similar offences against Mumbai Indians. The repeated infractions highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining the required over-rate standards. These consistent over-rate violations not only strain the team's finances but also reflect on-field management issues. As LSG looks ahead to future seasons, addressing these lapses will be crucial to avoid further sanctions and to enhance their competitive edge.
Implications for LSG's future campaigns
The consistent over-rate violations not only strain the team's finances but also reflect on-field management issues. As LSG looks ahead to future seasons, addressing these lapses will be crucial to avoid further sanctions and to enhance their competitive edge. Pant's individual brilliance with the bat was a silver lining in an otherwise challenging season for LSG. However, the team's inability to adhere to over-rate regulations underscores the need for strategic improvements in game management.

'Mai Bhi Khel Raha Hu Bhai': Rishabh Pant's Hilarious Taunt To Jadeja Goes Viral

Last Updated: Rishabh Pant told Ravindra Jadeja 'mai bhi khel raha hu bhai' during the Headingley Test between India and England. A video of the moment is going viral. Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was at his mischievous best behind the stumps during the Headingley Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Sunday (June 21). Turned up to full, the stump mic has caught several of his one-liners and quips with bowlers and fielders, which make for hilarious viewing. In one such video, posted by Star Sports on X, Pant is seen reacting to a wide delivery from Ravindra Jadeja. The ball from the left-arm spinner was wide down the leg-side, perhaps anticipating a big show from England's swashbuckling opener Ben Duckett, and Pant had to leap to his right to grab it. Pant told Jadeja: 'Mai bhi khel raha hu bhai, apne chauke ke chakkar mein mera chaukka mat dedena' (I am also playing, brother. In trying to save a four, don't give my four) . @RishabhPant17 + @ShubmanGill = Absolute cinema! ✨These two don't play the game, they put on a show! 🍿 #ENGvIND 👉 1st TEST, Day 3 | SUN, 22nd JUNE, 2:30 PM Streaming On JioHotstar! — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 21, 2025 Pant was referring to byes. If the ball was a bit wider and he had failed to grab it, Jadeja's pace would have probably carried it to the boundary. Byes don't count under the bowler's name but the wicketkeeper's, irrespective of how difficult the delivery is for the gloveman. Later in the video, we also saw new skipper Shubman Gill vocal with his bowler. Jadeja bowled a quick one on middle and off and Duckett could only block it back, but Gill spotted something different. Duckett eventually got out to Jasprit Bumrah in the 29th over, inside-edging one to his stumps. But he had given England a ton of momentum with his 62 (94), which included nine boundaries. Bumrah was India's only wicket-taker on the day with three scalps after Pant and Gill's wickets for 147 and 134 led to a lower-order collapse, and India finishing with 471. England ended the day at 209/3 with Ollie Pope batting at 100. First Published:

"He Worked On Certain Things...": India Batting Coach's Big Praise For Shubman Gill

Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak praised India test skipper Shubman Gill after his majestic hundred on captaincy debut against England on Saturday, in the first of five test match series at Headingley, Leeds. He said Gill had made specific changes in his batting, credited him with analysing what he needed to do, and felt he did really well. Sitanshu Kotak, while speaking in the post-match press conference, said, "I think, after the Australia series, he [Shubman Gill] has thought of certain things, which he has implemented, after Australia, Champions Trophy, and then we had IPL. He worked on certain things, and as soon as I saw him in the nets, I spoke to him about the changes you made, and he said yes. So a lot of credit goes to him for analysing what he needs to do, and I think he did really well." India were bowled out for 471 in 113 overs in the first innings, with captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all crossing the century milestone. Gill scored his century in 140 balls, making him the fifth Indian to have scored a century in his first Test as captain. He was dismissed on 147, trying to hit a six and complete his 150, but he was caught on square leg off Shoaib Bashir. Kotak also praised Pant for his brilliance in the middle. He felt the wicketkeeper/batter makes his decision when he bats and he plays aggressive shots, which does not mean that he can't play defensive cricket. "Rishabh Pant, I think, is someone who makes his own plans, makes his decision when he bats, so this inning was a little different than you would see him normally, but that is his plan, the way he wanted to approach it, and when he wanted to attack, he did. So, because he plays aggressively, it does not mean that he can't play defensively," he added. Pant was eventually dismissed on the second ball of the 108th over for 134 by Josh Tongue. India squandered the advantage in the first session on Day 2 as the side lost four wickets in the last half an hour. Shubman Gill (147), Karun Nair (0), Rishabh Pant (134) and Shardul Thakur (1) all lost their wickets. A century by Ollie Pope and his partnership with Ben Duckett helped England put up a strong reply against India in their first innings, ending the final session of day two of the first Test on a high. England earlier made a strong comeback, dismissing India for 471 after the visitors had ended the day yesterday on 359 for three and looked poised for a huge score. At the end of the second day's play, England were 209/3, with Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) unbeaten. They trail by 262 runs.

Rishabh Pant Called India's 'Greatest Wicketkeeper-Batter Ever, Well Ahead Of MS Dhoni'

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed Rishabh Pant as the country's "greatest wicketkeeper-batter ever" following his breathtaking century against England, calling him a "breath of fresh air". Pant continued his fine run in Test cricket, getting his seventh Test ton and breaking plenty of records during his knock in the first Test against England at Leeds. Speaking on 'Match Centre Live', Manjrekar said, "By far, India's greatest ever Test batter-keeper. I was worried when he was in the 90s that he might end up getting his 8th 90 of his career. It is just unbelievable that he has so many 90s! But he's a breath of fresh air." "When he got out and raised his bat, there were a lot of English supporters who stood up and applauded that innings. That's what we love about England -- these guys come to watch good cricket. They want their team to win, but when they see excellence from the opposition, you can see true appreciation for it," he added. The fact that Pant has slammed soem classic tons abroad raises his stature, according to Manjrekar. 'Again, I am a believer in where you got your hundreds, and I'm a big sort of, I always look at hundreds. OK, where have we got it? He's got hundreds in England. He's got 100 in South Africa. He's got a couple of hundreds in Australia,' Manjrekar said. 'So when you look at the MS' hundreds, with all due respect to his fans, his centuries would not be so much in these countries where batting is a bit more challenging, as batting on an Indian pitch. In Test cricket, he's already well ahead of MS,' he added. Pant on Saturday surpassed MS Dhoni to register the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter and continued his good show in what are regarded as tough wickets in countries outside Asia. Pant reached the milestone during India's first Test against England at Leeds. In his innings, Pant smashed 134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of over 75. Pant now has seven centuries, overtaking Dhoni, who has six Test centuries. This is also his fifth century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) conditions, the most by an Asian batter. Three of these centuries have come in England and one each have come in Australia and South Africa. Also, he has equalled Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara (seven centuries) for most centuries in Tests as a designated keeper among all Asian countries.
