Kerala HC says no to opening toilets at private petrol pumps for general public use
KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has directed the state government and local self-government institutions not to require that toilets in private petroleum retail outlets in Kerala be opened for public use. The court issued the order on a petition filed by the Petroleum Traders Welfare and Legal Service Society, an association of 300 retail outlet dealers, against a government order to convert their private toilets into public facilities. The petitioners contended that they were being forced to open the private toilets maintained by them at the outlets for the emergency needs of customers to the public. They also alleged that the Thiruvananthapuram corporation, as well as certain other local bodies, had pasted posters in some of the retail outlets to give the impression that the toilets are public toilets. The petitioners said treating toilets in private petroleum retail outlets, which are classified as high-risk zone, as public facilities would lead to unauthorised access. Also, chances of fire breaking out and other catastrophe are very high when a large number of people access the retail outlets in an unauthorised manner. Suman Chakravarthy, the standing counsel for the Thiruvananthapuram corporation, submitted that it is the duty of the dealers at the petrol pumps to ensure neat and safe toilet facilities for the public, and it is the duty of the LSG department to ensure that the dealers complied with it. In 2013, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued a circular stating that drinking water and toilet facilities at such outlets shall be accessible to the public around the clock. Recently, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Pathanamthitta, had ordered a petrol pump owner to pay Rs 1.65 lakh as compensation to a teacher for not letting her use the toilet on the premises. The complaint was lodged by C A Jayakumari, a resident of Ezhakulam in Pathanamthitta, against the owner of the filling station in Payyoli, Kozhikode.

Kerala HC bans single-use plastics in hilly tourist spots, functions
Kochi: Kerala high court on Tuesday issued a comprehensive order banning the use and sale of single-use plastics in ten hilly tourist destinations with high footfall — including Munnar, Thekkady, Vagamon, Nelliyampathy, Athirappally and Sulthan Bathery — as well as at all wedding auditoriums, hotels, restaurants and official functions of the central and state govts conducted in the state. A bench of Justices Bechu Kurian Thomas and P Gopinath ordered that the ban would come into effect on Oct 2, 2025 (Gandhi Jayanti), by which time the state govt should take adequate steps to implement the directive. The court was considering a suo motu petition initiated after a major fire that broke out at the Brahmapuram waste management plant in Kochi in March 2023, which took authorities nearly two weeks to put out completely and caused serious environment pollution. The banned single-use plastics include plastic water bottles of less than 5L, soft drink bottles of less than 2L, plastic food containers, plates, cups, sachets, straws and bakery boxes. The court further directed that the ban on single-use plastics at functions held in hotels and auditoriums should be made part of the licence conditions for such establishments. Non-woven bags of 60 GSM and above are excluded from the ban, as they are subject to the outcome of an appeal in another (Nibu Kasim) case pending before the court. To ensure access to clean drinking water, the court directed that sufficient water kiosks should be installed at reasonable intervals in hilly tourist areas. Alternative arrangements, such as the supply or sale of water through kiosks or in glass, copper or steel bottles, are to be made by the district administration and local self-govt institutions (LSGIs). Tourists must be discouraged from carrying single-use plastic bottles and encouraged to bring their own reusable bottles. Additionally, the state and LSG authorities were directed to take steps to prevent the dumping of plastic waste into rivers, canals and backwaters, and to ensure the regular collection of plastic waste from such water bodies. Voluntary organisations may also extend their support in these efforts. The court said effective public awareness and media campaigns should be launched across various platforms to educate the public on the harmful effects of single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly alternatives. Visual media should be encouraged to broadcast awareness content on the dangers of plastic pollution, especially the indiscriminate dumping of single-use plastics. Print media should also play an active role in this campaign, it said. The court directed the chief secretary and the special secretary of the LSG department to coordinate the implementation of these directives in collaboration with the LSGIs, Kerala State Pollution Control Board and state police.

IPL Star, Who Faced BCCI Suspension, Takes 5 Wickets In 5 Balls. LSG Owner Sanjiv Goenka Says, "Breakout Star..."
Digvesh Rathi was one of the finds of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The mystery spinner, who was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for just Rs 30 lakh, turned into one of their go-to bowlers, taking 14 wickets in 13 matches at a respectable economy rate of 8.25 in his debut season. While Rathi made several headlines with his controversial 'notebook' celebration, he has now gone viral for one of his on-field performances. Rathi had once taken five wickets in five consecutive balls in a local T20 match, the video of which has gone viral on the internet. Even LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka could not help but react. Rathi, playing in a local game in February 2025, left the opposition bamboozled with his trickery. Digvesh ran through the opposing batting order in one over, taking five wickets in a row - four bowled and one leg-before-wicket (LBW) - to finish with match figures of 7/28. The video was shared by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s official social media media handle, and here is what owner Goenka said: "Stumbled upon this clip of Digvesh Rathi taking 5 in 5 in a local T20 game. Just a glimpse of the talent that made him a breakout star for LSG in IPL 2025," Goenka posted on X. Stumbled upon this clip of Digvesh Rathi taking 5 in 5 in a local T20 game. Just a glimpse of the talent that made him a breakout star for @LucknowIPL in IPL 2025. — Dr. Sanjiv Goenka (@DrSanjivGoenka) June 16, 2025 Going by the post, it appears that Goenka was unaware about Digvesh having ever bowled such a spell, despite it happening before IPL 2025. Given that the spell took place in February 2025, it would be well after Digvesh had already been purchased by LSG at the mega auction. Digvesh shot to fame in IPL 2025 for both his excellent bowling as well as his fiery 'notebook' celebration. Digvesh's explosive celebration was first seen when he dismissed uncapped Punjab Kings (PBKS) batter Priyansh Arya in LSG's third match of the season. Digvesh was handed a number of fines by the BCCI during IPL 2025 for his celebration. Later in the season, a verbal spat between Digvesh and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) star Abhishek Sharma saw him accumulate five demerit points, resulting in a one-match ban. "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated Two Demerit Points, in addition to Three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and Two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad," the statement from IPL read.

'Rishabh Pant, forget about being vice-captain of Team India': Gautam Gambhir 'must have a chat' with India keeper
"Rishabh, tu apna game khel, forget that you are the vice captain of Team India," that's the only advice India head coach Gautam Gambhir should give the wicketkeeper-batter before the five-match Test series against England, starting June 20, feels former India batter Hemang Badani. Pant, officially part of the leadership group for the first time, will have the task of ushering in the new era of India's Test side under captain Shubman Gill. With the retirement of R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India lost the experience of nearly 300 Tests at one go. Filling that gap in in between two series is asking for Rome to be built in a day. But to the relief of India fans, they have players like Pant to bank on. Yes, one can bank on Pant in Test cricket. He did not have the best of times in Australia earlier this year. His IPL 2025, as the most expensive player in the league's history, didn't go as LSG would have hoped for but he still is one of India's best bets with the bat every time they step onto the field wearing whites. 1681 runs in SENA countries at an average of 37.81 with centuries everywhere barring New Zealand, scream Pant's potential as a batter. Few would argue that Pant, in only the first five years of his Test career, has already played some of the best knocks by an Indian in overseas conditions. The last Test that India played in England, Pant blasted 146 off 111 balls in the first innings where India were reduced to 98 for 5. This was his second Test century in England in as many tours. In his debut in Nottingham, seven years ago, he got off the mark with a six on the second ball that he faced in international cricket. In the practice sessions that India have had in the lead up to the five-match Test series, Pant has shown no signs of relenting – He dented the roof in one of the stands at Lords' and sent people living nearby the Beckenham ground ducking for cover with blistering sixes. Badani, a former India batter and now the head coach of Delhi Capitals, wants to see this version of Rishabh Pant next week, not the heavily cautious vice captain of the Indian Test side, weighed down by responsibility and expectations. "I genuinely hope it doesn't change one bit. I think he is somebody who has found the right balance of attacking stroke-making and defensive stroke-making in this cricket. So I don't see any reason why you should try and change that," Badani told Hindustan Times in an exclusive chat. Badani said Gambhir and the Indian team management should have a chat with him before the Test series and make it clear that he should continue playing his natural game that has brought him success in red-ball cricket in the last six or seven years. He didn't become vice captain of the Indian side because he was subdued. He was chosen for a leadership role because of the sheer success he has had in Test cricket by thinking positively. "It's important that someone like Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has a chat with him and speaks to him and says, 'Rishabh tu apna game khel.' Don't think too hard about captaincy, vice captaincy, you're the second in command, none of that. "There is a certain way that you've played over the years and that has worked well for you. And I think it will work well for us if he does that again, because he is a batter who comes to the bat at times when the second new ball is due," Badani added. There may be a lot of changes in the Indian batting line-up after Rohit and Kohli's retirement but Pant is certain to bat at No.5. Badani believes he has chance to keep the opposition under pressure at that number. "You want to keep the bowling on the mat, you want to keep them under pressure rather than keep leaving balls and let them settle down into a good line and length. It then it becomes easier for the bowler to try and pick wickets. "He needs to think like Rishabh Pant and nothing else. The management will have a massive say in this as to how free he is as a batter. And they should give him the freedom to go and bat with utmost positivity and not hold him back. Because the only challenge is that when you see a batter isn't having the right balance, but he does have the right balance." "Digvesh Rathi. 5 stars," LSG's X handle wrote while posting the clip. "Stumbled upon this clip of Digvesh Rathi taking 5 in 5 in a local T20 game. Just a glimpse of the talent that made him a breakout star for @LucknowIPL in IPL 2025," Goenka posted on his X account. Rathi claimed a total of seven wickets in the match, including a sensational spell of five consecutive dismissals. While the name of the league isn't mentioned, Goenka's post confirms that it occurred during a local T20 match. Lobo Predicted It, Again: South Africa's Historic WTC Win vs Australia In the video, the batting side is already in trouble, needing 113 runs from 36 balls. Rathi tightens the screws further, using his deceptive googlies to dismantle the batting lineup — four batters were bowled, and the fifth was trapped LBW. Apart from his wicket-taking prowess, Rathi grabbed headlines for his 'notebook celebration' after dismissing batters. The unique gesture, however, came at a cost — he was slapped with hefty fines during the tournament for it.
