SIBU: A Chinese national who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving resulting in the death of Sabah State Courts director Marutin Pagan, was Tuesday sentenced to five years' imprisonment and fined RM20,000, in default three months' jail, by the Magistrate's Court here. Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad, to whom the case was previously reassigned, ordered that Sun Xue Song's jail term take effect from the date of his arrest on March 30.

Rosli said the court took into account the accused's plea of guilt, the circumstances of the offence, mitigation presented and the broader public interest. 'I accept the accused's guilty plea and convict him as charged. After considering all circumstances, I sentence him to five years' imprisonment from the date of arrest and a RM20,000 fine, in default three months' imprisonment,' he said. The court also ordered that Sun be disqualified from holding a driving licence for five years from the date of the charge and for his passport to be returned upon completion of his sentence. In mitigation, Sun's counsel Terence Tiong Ing Jie submitted that the accused, an engineering graduate, had lawfully entered Malaysia for employment to support his 70-year-old mother and seven-year-old son. He further noted that the accused had no prior convictions, had fully cooperated with the authorities, voluntarily surrendered himself following the accident and expressed sincere remorse over the victim's death. 'The accused made a bereavement payment of RM70,000 to the deceased's wife, not as an attempt to seek leniency but as a sincere act of compassion,' said Tiong. The court was also informed that the collision occurred along a known accident-prone stretch of Jalan Kanowit-Durin. According to the statement of facts, the incident occurred on March 30 at approximately 1 pm when the accused was driving a Proton X70 along Jalan Kanowit-Durin towards the Kanowit roundabout. At the same time, a Toyota Fortuner driven by Margaretha Jeramy Marutin, with four passengers, including the deceased, Marutin Pagan, was already navigating the roundabout. Sun failed to stop and give way at the designated road markings and dangerously entered the roundabout, resulting in a collision which caused the Fortuner to overturn and land on its side outside the roundabout. Marutin sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to Kanowit Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as 'head and chest injuries due to a road traffic crash.' Sun initially claimed trial on April 7 before Magistrate Romario Jonoi but changed his plea to guilty during pre-trial case management on May 16. The case was initially handled by Magistrate Oon Kork Chern, who later recused himself due to a personal acquaintance with the deceased. The matter was then reassigned to Judge Rosli Ahmad. Marang police arrest six in drug raids across district
MARANG: Police have arrested six men suspected of being involved in drug trafficking during four separate raids across the district last week. District police chief Superintendent Mohd Sofian Redzuan said the first arrest involved three men who were detained on June 16 at a house in Kampung Gunung Kasim, Merchang. "All three suspects, aged between 30 and 36, tested positive for methamphetamine. Two of them have prior drug-related records. "Police seized 51.06g of pil kuda or amphetamine pills and 1.08g of syabu, with an estimated street value of RM3,500. They also confiscated a Yamaha 125Z motorcycle worth about RM10,000. "The suspects were remanded for seven days from June 17 to 23," he said at a press conference at the Marang district police headquarters today. In the second raid on June 17, a 30-year-old man was arrested at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Alor Limbat, Bukit Payung. "The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine. Police seized 57.1g of amphetamine pills worth RM3,500 and confiscated a Honda Wave motorcycle valued at RM10,000," he said. The third raid took place on June 21 in a forested area of Kampung Batangan, resulting in the arrest of a 34-year-old man. "The suspect, who has three prior drug-related records and also tested positive for methamphetamine, was found in possession of 219.36g of drugs worth approximately RM8,000. "Police also seized a Honda EX5 motorcycle worth RM3,000. He has been remanded from June 22 to 28," said Mohd Sofian. The most recent arrest was made on June 22 in Kampung Wakaf Dua, Bukit Payung, involving a 36-year-old man. "Urine tests confirmed he was positive for methamphetamine. Police confiscated 51.59g of amphetamine pills and 4.62g of heroin, valued at RM1,400," he said. All cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. "The total value of drugs seized across the four raids is estimated at RM16,400, while the vehicles confiscated are worth RM23,000. "All suspects are either self-employed or manual labourers. For the record, from Jan 1 to June 22, Marang police have seized drugs worth RM483,417," he added.

Investment Scam Syndicate Busted In Puchong, 10 Held
SERDANG, June 23 (Bernama) -- Police have arrested 10 individuals believed to be involved in a foreign currency investment scam that caused losses amounting to RM399,787, in a raid at a premises in Bandar Puteri, Puchong last Friday. Sepang police chief ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the suspects, comprising seven men and three women aged between 21 and 38, were believed to have assumed various roles, including managers, platform developers, customer service agents and administrators handling company documents. He said initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for the past six months, targeting both local and foreign victims. 'The syndicate allegedly offered lucrative returns on initial investments to gain victims' trust to continue investing through a self-developed app. 'It operated under two unregistered companies, and police are currently investigating another company believed to have been used to facilitate fund transfers from victims,' he told a press conference today. Muhamad Farid said checks on the application revealed a total of 2,597 individuals believed to have fallen victim to the scam, comprising 2,482 Malaysians, 111 Indonesians and one each from India, Mongolia, South Africa and Bhutan. 'During the raid, police seized three computer monitors, two CPUs, six laptops, 14 mobile phones and a Wi-Fi modem, all believed to have been used in the illegal operations, with a total seizure value estimated at RM45,000,' he said. He said none of the suspects had prior criminal records and all tested negative for drugs. 'The suspects were initially remanded for one day and released on police bail, but have since been re-arrested in connection with a report lodged in Taman Melawati,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act 2013.

Johor Police Smash Drug Trafficking Syndicate, Seize Drugs Worth Over RM7.1 Mln
JOHOR BAHRU, June 22 (Bernama) -- Johor Police have successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate believed to have been active since the beginning of this year through two separate raids in residential areas around Johor Bahru, with the value of the seizure estimated to exceed RM7.1 million. Johor police chief CP Datuk M Kumar said the special operation was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Johor police contingent headquarters with Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, at about 7.30 pm, between June 14 and 15. He said that in the first raid at a two-storey terrace house in Taman Mutiara Rini, police arrested a 45-year-old local man believed to be the mastermind along with a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'As a result of the inspection, police seized 2.67 kilogrammes of powder believed to be ecstasy and 368 grammes of drugs suspected to be marijuana,' he said in a press conference today. Following the arrest, police launched a second raid on another terrace house about a kilometre from the first location, which had also been rented by the same male suspect since May 2024 and arrested a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'In this second raid, police seized 38 kg of ecstasy powder and 1.37 kg of ketamine,' he said. In both raids, police also seized two cars worth RM190,000, cash RM49,150 and various jewellery worth RM17,630, with the total seizure amounting to RM265,615. He said the two foreign women were believed to have entered the country legally, but further investigations were being conducted into their travel documents. The syndicate is believed to operate in an organised manner, including using social media and delivery via 'runners' and police believe there are still members at large out there and investigations are underway to track them down.
