A new realm awaits
Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is set to drop its 27th studio album Phantom Island tomorrow, June 13.
Recorded simultaneously with their 2024 album Flight b741, the musical act said the new release is set to tackle themes similar to the 26th project, but with an orchestral laidback sound, crediting a 2023 moment when they met Los Angeles Philharmonic as inspiration.
'The songs felt like they needed this other energy and colour, that we needed to splash some different paint on the canvas,' frontman Stu Mackenzie said in an interview.
'We didn't know we were going to have an orchestra dubbed on top when we were recording. If we had, that would have really changed the songs, but we went into it very free and easy.
'The songs were written in a very 'improv' way, stitched together from multiple takes or longer jams… It feels like you're in the room with the band and the orchestra, that we're all in the same room together,' he added.
The band members also revealed that they plan to perform the new songs live alongside various orchestras during an upcoming tour.
Formed in 2010 in Melbourne, the group is known for exploring several genres and performing energetic live shows.
The band's current line-up consists of multi instrumentalists Stu, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood and Michael Cavanagh.

Kohli's Bengaluru fulfils IPL dream
Batting great Virat Kohli fulfilled an 18-year dream of winning an IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after they beat Punjab Kings by six runs in yesterday's final in Ahmedabad. Kohli's 43 from 35 balls at the top of the order set up Bengaluru for an imposing total of 190-9 which was one big blow too many for a Punjab side that battled until the end, finishing on 184-7. More than 91,000 fans packed into the 132,000-capacity stadium, a sea of Bengaluru's red and Kohli's jersey number 18 dominating the stands as chants of 'Kohli, Kohli' rang out. They celebrated noisily when Kohli and RCB clinched victory for the first time in the 18 years of the IPL, their three previous finals having all ended in defeat. The 36-year-old Kohli, one of India's all-time greats in all formats of the game, collapsed on the ground after the win and then got up to be hugged by his teammates as the crowd celebrated their hero. 'This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team, it's been 18 long years,' said Kohli. 'I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. 'I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled. 'I have stayed loyal to this team, no matter what. My heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore and this is the team I'll play for till the last day I play the IPL.' Punjab put up a feisty response to the Bengaluru total but faltered in their chase after left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya took 2-17 from his four overs. Shashank Singh hit a valiant 61 not out and finished with three sixes and a four off Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood who defended 29 runs in the final over. Hazlewood, who took 3-21 against Punjab in last week's qualifier win after recovering from a shoulder injury, struck first to send back left-handed Priyansh Arya for 24 with Phil Salt taking a stunning catch at the ropes. Impact substitute Prabhsimran Singh was the next to go off Pandya but the Bengaluru crowd went wild when Romario Shepherd had skipper Shreyas Iyer caught behind for one. 'King Kohli' Pandya stuck again to cut short Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis' stay on 39 and Bengaluru seized momentum and Shashank's late blitz was not enough. 'I am very proud of each and every individual who has participated in this team,' said Iyer. 'There are a lot of youngsters who are playing their first season, they've shown a lot of fearlessness. Australia's Glenn ‘Big Show' Maxwell calls time on ODIs
Explosive Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell called time on his one-day international career yesterday, but will continue in Twenty20 cricket with his eye on next year's World Cup. The 36-yearold, who played 149 ODIs, blasting 3,990 runs, said he was starting to feel the physical toll of the 50- over game. ' I felt like I was letting the team d o w n a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,' said Maxwell, who was nicknamed 'Big Show' for his all-action entertaining style of play. 'I had a good chat with (chair of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. 'We talked about the 2027 (50- over) World Cup and I said to him: 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'. 'I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.' His last game was Australia's Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to India in early March, after which fellow veteran Steve Smith also quit the 50-over format. The mercurial Maxwell's strike rate of 126.70 is the second highest in ODI cricket where he has crunched four hundreds and 23 half-centuries. His rate of scoring is second only to West Indian heavy hitter Andre Russell, and Maxwell has also taken 77 wickets with his off-spin. Perhaps his most memorable innings was at the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai, when he was batting with Australia reeling at 91-7, chasing 293 to win. In a high-pressure situation and battling severe cramp in searing heat, Maxwell took control, slamming 201 from just 128 balls to take his team to victory. He scored 179 of those runs in an unbroken 202 partnership with Pat Cummins, who contributed just 12 after coming at number nine. Australia went on to win the tournament, beating favourites India in the final at Ahmedabad. Maxwell was also part of the Australia team that lifted the 2015 ODI World Cup.
