Payten threatens axe on 'bullied' Cowboys
Todd Payten has warned he could swing the axe after admitting North Queensland were bullied by the Sydney Roosters as they fell to a second straight thrashing.
Payten described the Cowboys' 42-8 loss as looking like boys against men at times, as his team conceding four tries in the space of 10 minutes in the second half.
Halfback Tom Dearden also conceded he was "horrible", backing up four days after winning his first State of Origin game wearing the Queensland No.7 jersey.
Semi-finalists last year, the Cowboys are now in an almighty rut.
Payten's men have won just one match since Magic Round, dropping five and drawing one to Penrith.
They have let in an average of 36 points a game through that period, including 100 points alone in the past fortnight to the Dolphins and Cowboys.

Questions also remain around the halves pairing of Dearden and Jaxon Purdue, with the latter moved from centre to five-eighth a month ago.
But their biggest issue has been a woeful completion rate through that period, with Payten labelling them the NRL's worst team for errors out of their own end.
Adding to that is the fact the Cowboys have completed at above 75 per cent just twice in their past seven games.
Asked after the loss to the Roosters whether changes were possible, Payten indicated it was on his mind.
"We'll be considering it, definitely, off the back of the past few weeks," he said.
"We'll have a look at what is underneath and then reassess and get to work."
Payten also refused to use the Origin period as an excuse, with the Cowboys having four players coming in and out of camp in the past month.
"It's not an excuse, far from it," Payten said.
"Not a contributing factor one little bit.
"You look at some other teams across the competition (who) have handled it perfectly and we have done so in the past. So it's irrelevant.
"It's disappointing, and far from good enough.
"We got bullied, it was men against boys there for a little bit and that's concerning."
Payten's threat came as Dearden also made a scathing assessment of his own performance, which included conceding an intercept pass for a Mark Nawaqanitawase try.
The Cowboys had balls hitting the ground in attack, while Dearden was responsible for five missed tackles.
"The body felt good, I was ready to go," Dearden said of backing up from Origin.
"I'm really disappointed in my performance. I thought I was horrible tonight."

It was the feud that dominated talk in the lead up to Origin 2. And while Queensland coach Billy Slater says he has moved on from the "grub" furore started by ex-NSW prop Aaron Woods on Triple M, others are not so keen to put it to bed. Slater's former Storm teammate – and ex-Blues forward – Ryan Hoffman labelled Woods "a coward" while arguing State of Origin doesn't need manufactured drama to attract attention and publicity. "To say that for the benefit of providing spice for Origin, that's rubbish," Hoffman told the ABC's Outsiders program. "Media around Origin time is absolutely horrific (and) both states are guilty of it. There is enough to talk about in these games without having to throw ridiculous comments about. Aaron Woods was a coward for standing behind a microphone and throwing that out there. Billy Slater showed courage, going out there on a microphone and talking about responsibility." Hoffman's scathing comments should make things interesting when he runs into Woods at the next Blues' player reunion. Cronulla fans have been demanding coach Craig Fitzgibbon take a more ruthless approach to his under-performing side and start calling players out for poor performances. And while he didn't single out individuals for criticism following Sunday's collapse against Brisbane, it's clear he's had enough of some repeat offenders. Million-dollar man Nicho Hynes was again guilty of going MIA when the game was on the line, while Will Kennedy, Braydon Trindall and Ronaldo Mulitalo all made errors at critical times. There were also more than 30 missed tackles as the Broncos came back from 16 down to snatch victory. An agitated Fitzgibbon was clearly upset with the performance of his key playmakers. "Our discipline in defence has been poor for weeks and our discipline with the ball (and) decision making has been poor," he said. "You've got to pay attention the whole game and not have these moments and unfortunately we had too many of them. We've been unsettled the whole year for different reasons and we've got to do something about it." Greg Alexander, a former champion halfback, said of Hynes on SEN radio: "Nicho's already under pressure. He's under pressure every set. They were in a position to win (against Brisbane) and couldn't get it done. They bumbled around and made errors. They've now dropped to sixth. It's time (for them) to stand up." Minjee Lee wins the KPMG Women's PGA Championship for her 3rd major title
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Minjee Lee closed with a 2-over 74 but never gave up the lead Sunday in the final round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship to win her third major title. While Lee had three bogeys in a four-hole stretch on the front nine, she had started the day with a four-stroke lead over Jeeno Thitikul. And the world's No. 2-ranked player, also in that final group, bogeyed both par 5s that are among the first three holes on Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco. Lee, ranked 24th, finished at 4-under 284, three strokes ahead of Auston Kim and Chanettee Wannasaen, the only other players to finish under par. Kim and Wannasaen both shot 68 to match the best rounds of the day and the tournament after only two 68s combined the first three rounds. Kim played without a bogey, but had only pars after three consecutive birdies to wrap up her front nine. With a record $12 million purse that was up from $10.4 million a year ago and matched the U.S. Women's Open for the most price money, Lee took home $1.8 million. That matches the $1.8 million Lee got for her four-stroke win in the 2022 U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles. The 29-year-old Australian who is a Texas resident, living in nearby Irving, got her 11th career win. It was her first this season, making it 16 players to win 16 LPGA tournaments this year. State of Origin ramifications after Queensland players caught in ugly scenes
Kalyn Ponga's job as Queensland State of Origin fullback appears safe as houses after Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow produced some ordinary moments in defence over the weekend. Former NRL player Denan Kemp had suggested last week that Maroons coach Billy Slater should seriously think about axing Ponga for Origin 3. The superstar fullback had four missed tackles and two costly errors in Game 2, while only running for 77 metres from eight carries. Despite the fact Queensland won Game 2 to send the series to a decider, Kemp declared the Maroons can't afford to have their fullback making simple errors. Whether or not Ponga heard the criticism remains to be seen, but he came out and had his best game in weeks on Saturday as the Knights shocked the Dolphins 26-20. And the leading contenders to replace him as Maroons fullback - Walsh and Tabuai-Fidow - didn't do much to press their claims. Ponga had two try-assists and five tackle breaks, running for 179 metres and looking more dangerous than he has in weeks. He didn't have a single error and only missed one tackle in Newcastle's shock win. If Slater was thinking about axing Ponga due to his defence, the actions of Tabuai-Fidow and Walsh wouldn't have done much to convince him. Tabuai-Fidow had a shocker in the final seconds on Saturday afternoon, failing to contest a bomb from Ponga and accidentally kicking it back to the Knights. Bradman Best then set up Brodie Jones for the match-winning try, which came directly from Tabuai-Fidow's mistake. The Dolphins fullback did score a try and ran for 237 metres, but the game-changing gaffe wouldn't have impressed Slater. As for Walsh, he had a blinder with ball in hand as the Broncos beat the Sharks 34-28. The 22-year-old had two try-assists, three line-break assists and four tackle breaks, running for 182 metres. But once again it was his work on the defensive side that let him down. As well as being visibly hampered by a knee injury, he let second-rower Teig Wilton run around him with ease to set up a try for Will Kennedy in the first half. Speaking last week, former Broncos and Warriors winger Kemp said the Maroons will "lose by 30-plus" if Ponga has another shocker under the high ball in Origin 3. He also had a poor miss on Nathan Cleary, but got lucky the try was disallowed for an obstruction. "He dropped three bombs. He got bounced off by Cleary and got lucky there was an obstruction," Kemp said. "I think Billy has to have a real hard look at that fullback position. I think KP (Ponga) is just out of form. "It's tough but if you've got that many errors, it's just a real question we (Queensland) have to ask ourselves. We need someone who's bringing energy around the ruck, making their catches and tackles. It's definitely a question that I think Billy should be considering because we can't afford to go into Game 3 and have that many dropped balls. We'll lose by 30-plus."
