Andrew Johns' staggering call on Panthers as Sharks face brutal $1 million decision

Yahoo5 hours ago

😃 The good: Panthers tipped to make stunning run to finals
😔 The bad: Ryan Hoffman launches fresh swipe at Aaron Woods
😡 The ugly: Time for Sharks to make difficult call on Nicho Hynes?
Are we witnessing one of rugby league's greatest ever revivals? Penrith's stirring 10-point win over the Warriors has ignited talk of a late-season finals run and a potential shot at a fifth straight title.
The Panthers are now eighth and have every other team looking over their shoulder after stringing together three consecutive wins, the latest victory over the Warriors away from home and without their Origin stars. Talk of another grand final appearance would have seemed farcical just a month ago when the premiers were languishing at the bottom of the table after losing to Newcastle in Bathurst.
Coach Ivan Cleary said at the time: "It's not where you want to be. We've already shown this year that we have the potential to be doing much better, but you can only rely on potential for so long." The four-time premiership winner then – prophetically - added: "But the ladder doesn't really matter until July or August."
Andrew Johns not only believes Penrith will make the play-offs but could successfully defend their title from the lower half of the top eight. "If they are fully fit, they could win it from outside the top four," he declared. We will know a lot more about the Panthers after they take on competition leaders Canterbury in an absolute blockbuster on Thursday night.
It was the feud that dominated talk in the lead up to Origin 2. And while Queensland coach Billy Slater says he has moved on from the "grub" furore started by ex-NSW prop Aaron Woods on Triple M, others are not so keen to put it to bed.
Slater's former Storm teammate – and ex-Blues forward – Ryan Hoffman labelled Woods "a coward" while arguing State of Origin doesn't need manufactured drama to attract attention and publicity. "To say that for the benefit of providing spice for Origin, that's rubbish," Hoffman told the ABC's Outsiders program.
"Media around Origin time is absolutely horrific (and) both states are guilty of it. There is enough to talk about in these games without having to throw ridiculous comments about. Aaron Woods was a coward for standing behind a microphone and throwing that out there. Billy Slater showed courage, going out there on a microphone and talking about responsibility."
Hoffman's scathing comments should make things interesting when he runs into Woods at the next Blues' player reunion.
Cronulla fans have been demanding coach Craig Fitzgibbon take a more ruthless approach to his under-performing side and start calling players out for poor performances. And while he didn't single out individuals for criticism following Sunday's collapse against Brisbane, it's clear he's had enough of some repeat offenders.
Million-dollar man Nicho Hynes was again guilty of going MIA when the game was on the line, while Will Kennedy, Braydon Trindall and Ronaldo Mulitalo all made errors at critical times. There were also more than 30 missed tackles as the Broncos came back from 16 down to snatch victory.
An agitated Fitzgibbon was clearly upset with the performance of his key playmakers. "Our discipline in defence has been poor for weeks and our discipline with the ball (and) decision making has been poor," he said.
"You've got to pay attention the whole game and not have these moments and unfortunately we had too many of them. We've been unsettled the whole year for different reasons and we've got to do something about it."
Greg Alexander, a former champion halfback, said of Hynes on SEN radio: "Nicho's already under pressure. He's under pressure every set. They were in a position to win (against Brisbane) and couldn't get it done. They bumbled around and made errors. They've now dropped to sixth. It's time (for them) to stand up."

Dalton's stellar sports career dimmed by back injury

With a sporting career inspired by Cathy Freeman, fellow Olympic gold medallist and multi-sports star Chloe Dalton has been forced to retire due a back injury. Part of the champion women's sevens rugby team at the 2016 Rio Games, Dalton also played AFLW for both Carlton and GWS over seven seasons, running out for 32 games. Demonstrating her versatility and skill, she also played in the WNBL before switching her focus to rugby sevens. Requiring back surgery after an injury ended her 2024 season with the Giants, Dalton said she's failed to recover sufficiently to resume her career. "Retired. After a second back surgery nine months ago, my body hasn't bounced back to the point where I can play footy again," the 31-year-old posted on social media. "It's been a tricky process trying to come to terms with the fact that my sporting career has finished through injury." Dalton posted a series of photos and told the story of her sporting journey; how she was determined to win an Olympic gold medal after watching Freeman's triumph at the Sydney Games. When realising she wasn't good enough to make the Australian basketball team she set her sights on sevens. "I went onto Google and typed in lists of Olympic sports," Dalton wrote. "Rugby sevens would be in the Olympics for the first time in 2016. I had just 2.5 years to learn how to play rugby and secure myself a ticket on that plane to Rio. "... That seven year old girl got to stand on the podium and have her very own Olympic gold medal put around her neck." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chloe Dalton (@chloeedalton) Dalton said that she then saw AFLW on television and, although she didn't know the rules, wanted to play. Joining the Blues in 2018, she was part of Carlton's grand final team a year later. She decided to switch back to sevens to compete at the Tokyo Olympics but shattered her cheekbone four weeks out from the Games. After launching The Female Athlete Project, which is a platform to highlight the sporting achievements of women, she then resumed her AFLW career with GWS but injuries restricted her to just 16 games across four seasons. After announcing her retirement the Giants congratulated Dalton her achievements and contribution. "Chloe's impact both on and off the field for the Giants has been profound and she'll leave a lasting legacy with her teammates, coaches and staff," GWS women's football boss Alison Zell said.

AFL world all says same thing as Marcus Bontempelli makes staggering history

AFL fans have declared Marcus Bontempelli the clear best player in the league after another star performance in the Western Bulldogs' thrashing of Richmond on Sunday. As contract talks ramp up, the Dogs captain was best on-field with 36 possessions - his highest tally this season - and three goals in the 21.9 (135) to 8.8 (56) win at Marvel Stadium. It marked Bontempelli's 77th win as captain of the Western Bulldogs - the most in club history. The 29-year-old received an official game rating of 31.3 from the AFL statisticians - the 26th time he's been rated 25.0 or higher in his career. Only Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield (31) has more ratings of 25 or higher, while Bontempelli's mark of 26 takes him equal with Gary Ablett Jr. Ablett would have more but the ratings system only began in 2012 - 10 years after he made his debut. To put Bontempelli's record into context, some of the greats of the modern era never even had 20. Richmond superstar Dustin Martin had 19 in his career, as did Sydney and Hawthorn champion Lance Franklin. Current players Patrick Cripps (12), Nat Fyfe (12) and Lachie Neale (11) aren't even close. Bontempelli has been unlucky to miss out on the last two Brownlow medals, which went to Neale and Cripps. But if he produces more games like Sunday's, the Western Bulldogs star will go very close in 2025. Fans have been debating for weeks whether Bontempelli or Nick Daicos is the best player in the league, but Sunday seemed to tip the scales in Bont's favour. He also racked up 15 contested possessions, an 83 per cent disposal efficiency, seven clearances, 11 inside-50s, 716 metres gained, 12 score involvements and four goal assists. You are comparing a Rolls Royce with a kid. Nick will be good. But Bont is easily the best player in the AFL. — COOPS 😎 (@sportandracing) June 22, 2025 GOAT! — RUSH2112 (@StevenDavorin) June 22, 2025 And what a game he played BOG. A champion. — Gwol50 (@gwol50) June 22, 2025 Career games rated 25.0 or higher -Patrick Dangerfield: x31MARCUS BONTEMPELLI: x26Gary Ablett Jr: x26 (would be much higher but stats only go back to 2012)Dustin Martin: x19Lance Franklin: x19Patrick Cripps: x12Nat Fyfe: x12Lachie Neale: x11Bont ain't even 30 yet... — Jack Johnston (@JackCJohnston) June 22, 2025 Captain Goat — Waddayareckon (@Waddayareckon1) June 22, 2025 Richmond coach Adem Yze lamented his team's poor second term. "You could sense that it had ripped the heart out of our team. The response was OK in the second half, but the second quarter flattened us pretty bad," he admitted. "We have to dig in and understand why we lost spirit so easily in that second quarter. I'd be more worried if we turned our toes up and didn't try in the last half." Sunday's 79-point belting of Richmond, coupled with a huge win over St Kilda last week, have the Dogs primed to try and break their duck against teams above them on the AFL ladder. The defeat of the Tigers was the Bulldogs' largest score of the season and returned them to the top eight, but they're yet to claim a major scalp. RELATED: AFL viewers make angry complaint about 'ridiculous' move Cyril Rioli continues sad stance as Buddy Franklin makes return Coach Luke Beveridge said he's well aware the Sydney Swans (two games below them) are coming after Saturday's important away win over Port Adelaide. When asked a speculative question post-game about the finals, Beveridge retorted: "We are a mile off September ... you're not going to catch me out talking about September. "Will we be a team that is capable of beating anyone at the end of the year? Well I think so - we think that every week. Ultimately to get anywhere and achieve anything as the season rolls on, we're going to need to beat these teams above us. "In the past, Sydney have come at us really hard. As much as they're below us on the ladder, you can sense that they're coming. They have a little bit of momentum, so we won't think they're below us on the ladder by any means." with AAP

Tyrese Haliburton's dad confirms Pacers star suffered Achilles injury in NBA Finals Game 7

OKLAHOMA CITY – Tyrese Haliburton's father, John, confirmed to ABC and ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters that Tyrese has an Achilles tendon injury, Salters reported on the ABC broadcast of Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Salters said John also told her Tyrese seems to be in good spirits and that his entire family — including his mother and brother — is in the locker room with him as he's watching the game and cheering on the Pacers, who have a 48-47 halftime lead. An Achilles tendon tear tends to require a recovery time of 8-10 months. Pacers centers Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman tore their Achilles tendons in the first eight days of the season and did not return to action in 2024-25. Haliburton was dealing with a right calf strain coming to into the game, suffering it in Game 5 of the Finals. He had been undergoing around-the-clock treatment since and opted to play in Game 6 though he was made aware that there was a risk of further injury.
