What's the difference between sleet and freezing rain?

(WBRE/WYOU) — Though there is a common misunderstanding between sleet and freezing rain, there is an easy phrase to remember the difference.

Sleet bounces off objects while freezing rain instantly freezes on contact with an object.
Sleet is not to be confused with hail. Hail happens during the summer months within a thunderstorm cloud. Sleet only occurs during the winter months.
The column of air must be at or below the freezing mark for a snowflake to fall from the cloud and reach the ground.
For sleet to form, a snowflake will hit a brief pocket of warmer air, then refreeze and bounce on the ground.
For freezing rain, a snowflake melts into a raindrop in a large layer of warm air and freezes when it hits the cold surface. However, since the ground, roads, and sidewalks can still be at or below the freezing mark, the rain instantly freezes on contact.

(KNWA/KFTA) — West Fork Police Department is actively working on clearing roads from fallen trees from overnight storms. In a Facebook post, police say they are aware of multiple trees down in the area blocking roads. Overnight storms damaged areas such as Highfill and West Fork. Even hotter weather on the way next week

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)- Another day, another round of hot weather, and we have little relief in your First Alert Forecast. Weekend: Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s each afternoon this weekend. Isolated showers and storms are possible Saturday afternoon. Excess humidity will cause feel-like readings to be in the upper 90s. Rain chances back off slightly Sunday, with only stray showers possible. Heat index temperatures will remain in the upper 90s. Next Week: The heat dome across the Southeast will remain in place through next week. This will allow afternoon highs to soar in the upper 90s by Tuesday. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are set to be the hottest days of the year.. so far. Heat index readings could be as hot as 105 degrees. Rain chances also increase by the middle of next week.
