Menstrual waste management gets a sustainable shift in DK panchayats

Mangaluru: As part of a zero-waste model initiative, 10 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada were identified for waste management interventions through Hasiru Dala. However, managing sanitary waste emerged as one of the most pressing and often overlooked challenges.

"We receive about 200kg of sanitary waste every day, including diapers and pads. Some panchayats alone generate 100–300kg of such waste daily," said Nagaraj Raghav Anchan, project manager, Hasiru Dala. He said that this kind of waste poses a major environmental and logistical challenge.
In response, Hasiru Dala launched a proactive campaign promoting the use of menstrual cups. "We distributed menstrual cups in seven panchayats so far.
Wherever we conduct meetings on menstrual hygiene, we create WhatsApp groups, collect feedback, and even have a doctor on hand to address women's concerns. Nearly 90% of the women who where present during wareness shifted to menstrual cups," he added.
Beyond menstrual waste, the project focused on improving waste collection systems. "There is no point blaming only the public. We must set up a functioning system," said Anchan.
Working closely with Sanjeevani self-help group, the initiative ensured door-to-door collection and awareness drives through IEC activities. The project is supported by SBI Foundation. "We realised that once a proper system is in place, we collect nearly one tonne of waste per day. Wet waste is managed at composting units, while dry waste is routed to Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs)."
The campaign also includes educational outreach in schools through sessions on Trashonomics, fostering environmental responsibility from a young age.

DK zilla panchayat deputy secretary Jayalakshmi Raikod said that awareness is happening, but it will take some time for public mindset to change.
2.5 tonne waste cleared in Neermarga
A significant clean-up drive was carried out in Neermarga, recently, by volunteers from Hasiru Dala, with active support from residents. The team cleared nearly 2.5 tonnes of waste from a steep black spot that became an unofficial dumping site.
Nagaraj Anchan said that the area was used for waste disposal due to irregular waste collection services. The pile-up led to a strong stench and posed health and environmental concerns.
"The situation was quite severe. The terrain made it challenging, but with the help of the community, we managed to clear the spot," he said.
Hasiru Dala is also planning a month-long awareness programme in the region. The campaign will focus on educating citizens about responsible waste segregation, proper disposal, and the importance of community involvement in keeping their surroundings clean.

Southern Railway launches telemedicine link to bring specialist care to remote railway units

SR general manager R N Singh inaugurated the telemedicine facility. CHENNAI: Southern Railway has launched an integrated telemedicine facility in railway hospitals and health units, allowing patients in remote areas to access specialist and super-specialist care without travelling long distances. Inaugurated by general manager R N Singh at the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital in Perambur on Friday, the system links divisional hospitals and health units to the headquarters hospital here. The facility was developed under the Government of India's e-Sanjeevani scheme. Using real-time video consultations and live streaming of diagnostic reports such as ECGs and X-rays, medical officers at remote locations can now consult directly with specialists at Perambur, streamlining treatment decisions. Officials said the facility proved crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic and is now the first of its kind in Indian Railways. During the launch, Singh witnessed a live consultation from the Divisional Railway Hospital in Madurai and urged officials to ensure high-speed internet across all health units. He reviewed new digital queue systems and signage boards at the Perambur OPD block.

Health-tech sees IPO rush fueled by digitisation, govt ease, AI adoption

Health-tech IPOs (initial public offerings) are on the rise in India's healthcare sector — in fact, five out of the 12 healthcare IPOs in the last one-and-a-half years since January 2024 are health-tech companies. According to data shared by PRIME Database, the healthcare sector has seen 12 IPOs since January 2024, with a total issue size of Rs 20,576 crore. Of these, five companies — Entero Healthcare Solutions, Indegene, Sagility India, Sai Life Sciences and Inventurus Knowledge Solutions — are health-tech firms that have collectively raised over Rs 11,000 crore. Other major healthcare IPOs include Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Akums Drugs and Dr Agarwal's Healthcare. The Covid-19 pandemic had a deep impact on the sector and accelerated digitisation, strengthened public and private focus on tech-enabled healthcare solutions, facilitated government easing, and encouraged the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across the spectrum — from diagnostics to personalised treatment. Amitabh Malhotra, vice-chairman of investment banking at HSBC India, noted that the combination of rising incomes, greater insurance penetration, growing demand for medical infrastructure and India's cost competitiveness positions the healthcare industry for sustained, multi-decade growth — driven largely by the private sector. 'The Indian healthcare services market presents a compelling growth story, underpinned by its significant potential and current under-penetration. With healthcare expenditure around 3 per cent of GDP and per capita spend of $57 — among the lowest globally — the sector is ripe for transformation,' Malhotra noted. Health-tech IPOs in India have witnessed significant growth in recent years, fuelled by increasing digitisation of healthcare and a rising focus on technology-driven solutions — spurred by both public initiatives such as e-Sanjeevani and private sector tech-focused offerings, said Vivek Tandon, vice-president at Primus Partners. 'The pandemic played a major role in highlighting the importance of digital health infrastructure, boosting investor interest in companies offering telemedicine, diagnostics and health data solutions. The growing use of AI in healthcare, from diagnostics to personalised treatment, has further enhanced the appeal of these companies. Additionally, government focus and ease of reforms has made it easier for health-tech firms to scale and access public markets,' added Tandon. More firms are gearing up for IPOs over the coming years, including QubeHealth, Vitraya, Practo, Medulance, among others. Mumbai-based B2B health-tech-fintech firm QubeHealth has announced plans to file for an IPO by FY31, with a proposed issue size of approximately Rs 800 crore. 'We expect to process Rs 1,000 crore a year in healthcare payments by FY30, by the time we are ready for our IPO, growing at an average of 70 per cent year-on-year,' said Chris George, CEO, QubeHealth. Vitraya, a Delhi-based health-tech company, said it plans to file its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) within the next 24 to 36 months. The company is targeting an IPO issue size of Rs 500 crore. 'The tech sector is heavily regulated, so going public through an IPO offers added credibility and reassurance to both our customers and regulators. For us, the IPO is more about embracing transparency and navigating regulatory frameworks than raising capital or seeking liquidity. Currently, around 80 per cent of our revenue comes from India and 20 per cent from international markets. Post-IPO, we expect the domestic share to further outpace international contributions,' said Mrinal Sinha, CEO and co-founder, Vitraya Technologies. Most of the listed players in the healthcare sector are trading at substantial valuation premiums, making IPOs an important factor, said Chokkalingam G, founder of Equinomics. 'The sector's outlook remains strong, supported by inelastic demand — healthcare is a necessity, and consumers are unlikely to cut back on related expenses even in challenging times.' 'Previously, IPO activity was largely concentrated in pharmaceutical companies and standalone hospitals. However, the landscape is now expanding to include a wide range of ancillary businesses that support healthcare providers. Many of these companies are seeking growth capital and providing liquidity for existing investors. As a result, we are likely to see a significant number of IPOs from this space over the next three years.' healthcare IPOs 1.1.2024 onwards Industry: Hospitals/Diagnostic Services, Medical Equipment/Supplies/Accessories & Pharmaceuticals & Drugs SNO. Multibagger small-cap stock under ₹200 hits lifetime high; gives almost 4000% returns in five years

Shares of small-cap healthcare company Aayush Wellness continued their relentless rally on Tuesday, touching a new lifetime high of ₹ 173.30. Trading under ₹ 200, the stock has delivered a staggering 3,830 percent return over the past five years, transforming a ₹ 1 lakh investment made in June 2020 into over ₹ 39 lakh. Backed by aggressive growth strategies, technological expansion, and shareholder-friendly corporate actions, the stock has become one of the most talked-about multibaggers in the small-cap space. Formerly known as Aayush Food and Herbs Ltd, the company rebranded to Aayush Wellness Ltd in July 2024 to reflect its renewed focus on preventive and herbal healthcare. From ₹ 4.4 in June 2020, the scrip has given multibagger returns surging to ₹ 173.30 as of June 18, 2025, gaining nearly 4,000 percent in five years. Over the past one year alone, the stock has jumped 830 percent, and it is up 931 percent from its 52-week low of ₹ 16.81 touched in July 2024. The meteoric rise has been fueled by uninterrupted upper circuits over the past one month and continuous gains since March 27, 2025. After a 15 percent decline in March, the smallcap-stock" data-vars-page-type="story" data-vars-link-type="Manual">smallcap stock rebounded strongly—gaining 9.5 percent in February, 58 percent in April, and 15 percent in the first 10 days of May. A key driver behind Aayush Wellness' surge has been its strategic diversification into healthcare services. On April 26, the company announced its entry into tech-enabled wellness delivery through smart health kiosks and medical support centers. The initiative aligns with the government's E-Sanjeevani telemedicine vision and seeks to bridge the healthcare access gap in semi-urban and rural areas. The company's newly introduced health ATMs can conduct diagnostic tests in just 2–3 minutes, maintain digital health records, and offer real-time doctor consultations. The first center was inaugurated in Virar, Maharashtra, and the company has earmarked ₹ 25 crore for Phase 1 of this expansion. Future funding will depend on performance and demand traction. This offline network complements Aayush's established presence in the nutraceutical and herbal supplement space. The brand offers beauty and sleep-enhancing gummies, functional foods, and tobacco-free wellness alternatives aimed at both urban and rural markets. To further bolster liquidity and investor participation, the company undertook a 1:10 stock split in August 2024, followed by a 1:2 bonus issue in December. These measures widened the shareholder base and helped sustain the stock's upward momentum. The rebranding in July 2024—from a food-focused legacy company to a wellness-driven enterprise—marked a strategic inflection point. Headquartered in New Delhi and established in 1984, Aayush Wellness is now positioning itself as a one-stop solution for preventive, herbal, and tech-enabled health products and services.
