Siddharth P Malhotra on Bollywood's harsh realities, ‘Hichki' struggles - 'It reached a point where I wanted to end it all"

Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra, best known for his work on 'Hichki' and 'Maharaj', offering a rare insight into his turbulent journey in the film industry in a candid podcast. While he was at it, he also opened up about his family's cinematic legacy, and the deeply personal struggles that shaped him as a storyteller. As the grandson of legendary actor Prem Nath and Beena Rai, and son of producer Prem Kishan, Siddharth admitted to The Free Press Journal that while a legacy may offer access, it doesn't promise respect or success. Sharing his initial days in the industry, he revealed that he started work at the age of 16, and took on odd jobs in TV serial sets, from setting up vanity vans to managing food, laying the groundwork for what would become an intense yet rewarding journey in television with popular shows like Sanjeevani and Dill Mill Gayye. Despite the exposure, breaking into films was anything but easy. After his 2010 directorial debut We Are Family, Siddharth faced a 7-year-long dry spell where his pitches consistently failed to take off. Hichki: A Turning Point From 2011 to 2017, Hichki maintained an idea he believed in, but no one else did. He approached actors from top to bottom, only to face repeated rejections. 'It reached a point where I wanted to end it all,' he admitted. The turnaround came when his wife, Sapna, pushed him to pitch it to Aditya Chopra . The film, shot in just 28 days, became a breakthrough moment. Remembering Prem Nath Siddharth also reflected on his grandfather Prem Nath's legacy, calling him 'a very learned man' who once swam the Mansarovar and knew over 100 classical raags. 'I was just 13 when he passed, but there are so many conversations I wish I could've had with him,' he shared. HC takes note of Kedar crash, seeks state response

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Monday took suo motu cognisance of media reports on the recent helicopter crash near Gaurikund on the Kedarnath route, which claimed the lives of seven people, including a toddler, five pilgrims and the pilot. A division bench comprising Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Kumar Verma sought an explanation from the state administration regarding the recurring helicopter accidents and prevailing safety lapses in the Char Dham region. Chief Standing Counsel Chandrashekhar Rawat informed the court that the state govt had suspended all helicopter services related to the Char Dham Yatra following the latest crash as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of pilgrims. During the proceedings, the court observed that at least one helicopter crash occurs annually during the Char Dham Yatra and expressed concern over the persistent safety risks associated with aviation operations in the region. Stressing the need for a comprehensive policy on helicopter operations, the court noted that the high-altitude Himalayan terrain is subject to rapidly changing weather conditions and that the post-monsoon dryness typical of the region may pose additional operational challenges. It emphasised that helicopter operators must be thoroughly familiar with both mountainous and lowland weather and visibility patterns. The June 15 crash marks the fifth such incident involving helicopters on the Char Dham route in the past 39 days. On June 7, a Kestrel Aviation helicopter carrying six pilgrims crash-landed on the Guptkashi-Gaurikund highway near Barasu. The pilot sustained injuries, but all passengers were unharmed. Authorities suspect a technical snag led to the emergency landing. Earlier, on May 17, a Sanjeevani air ambulance operated by AIIMS-Rishikesh crash-landed near the Kedarnath helipad after its tail struck the ground during landing. The pilot, a doctor, and a nurse onboard escaped unhurt. Officials said the helicopter attempted to land on an adjacent ground due to a technical issue. On May 12, a helicopter returning from Badrinath to Sersi made an emergency landing on the grounds of a school in Ukhimath due to poor visibility. No casualties were reported. On May 8, when a chopper operated by Aero Trans Service Pvt Ltd crashed near Gangnani in Uttarkashi district, killing six people, including five pilgrims and the pilot, and injuring one passenger.

List of helicopter crashes in Uttarakhand over the years: A timeline

Following the fatal Ahmedabad Air India crash, which claimed lives of 241 passengers onboard, another shocking air-related incident came to light today (June 15, 2025), where at least seven people lost their lives as the helicopter flying them from the Kedarnath temple to Guptkashi in Uttarakhand crashed in a forest. This is the fifth helicopter accident in Uttarakhand in around 40 days. Reports suggest that the seven victims in the Aryan Aviation Helicopter crash included the pilot and the chopper crashed between Gaurikund and Sonprayag during its 10-minute ride. According to a statement issued by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), all the seven people onboard were charred to death in the incident which occurred around 5:20 am in the morning on June 15, 2025. Over the years, owing to weather circumstances, pilgrims rush and topographical challenges, Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand has witnessed a series of helicopter crashes. The hill state has become a hotbed for chopper-related tragedies and today's incident occurred above the Gaurikund forest area amid poor visibility caused by adverse weather conditions, stated Nandan Singh Rajwar, District Disaster Management Officer of Rudraprayag. The fatal crash reminds us of the recent aviation mishaps related to helicopters in the Uttarakhand and Char Dham region where passengers are ferried routinely. A look at helicopter crashes: A timeline June 7, 2025 A helicopter carrying five passengers in Uttarakhand made an emergency landing on a highway on June 7, 2025. The aircraft, operated by Kestrel Aviation Private Limited, was on its way from Rudraprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand when the incident occurred. The helicopter encountered a technical issue during take-off when the collective control became stuck. Acting swiftly, pilot Captain RPS Sodhi managed to land the aircraft safely on the highway next to the helipad, preventing any potential mishaps. May 17, 2025 In a string of helicopter-related incidents, an air ambulance helicopter made an emergency landing in Kedarnath due to a technical snag. The 'Sanjeevani' helicopter ambulance reportedly suffered a malfunction in its tail rotor, leading to difficulties in landing. However, the passengers onboard were left unhurt. May 8, 2025 Six people, including the pilot, lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand. The chopper was en route from Dehradun to the Harsil helipad at the time of the incident. Among the deceased were five female tourists. The Bell 407 helicopter crashed into a hillside following weather changes. October 16, 2024 A helicopter carrying Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar was forced to make an emergency landing in Ralam village near Munsiyari due to poor weather conditions and low visibility. The chopper, en route to the Milam Glacier, landed safely around 1:30 PM. Onboard were three officials, including the Additional Chief Electoral Officer of Uttarakhand. All passengers were reported safe and waited for weather clearance to resume their journey. October 18, 2022 A helicopter crash in Kedarnath claimed the lives of six devotees along with the pilot. In the wake of the tragedy, the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) urged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to set up an air traffic control system in the region to enhance oversight of helicopter operations. During the Char Dham Yatra season, the Kedarnath area sees an average of 400 helicopter sorties per day. DGCA intervention and other security steps Following multiple helicopter-related incidents in and around Uttarakhand following technical failures, emergency landings, and fatal crashes due to mechanical issues or adverse weather, safety audits has been initiated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and is also reviewing the necessity of curtailing helicopter operations to Char Dham if required. Furthermore, the operators have been asked to submit updated safety protocols, weather readiness reports, and maintenance logs in order to keep a check on air-related mishaps.

‘Half his blood stuck in machine': UP kidney patient dies during dialysis as power fails, no diesel for generator

A 26-year-old kidney patient in Bijnor died during dialysis when a power outage struck the district hospital, and the backup generator lacked fuel. Sarfaraz Ahmad's treatment was interrupted, leaving his family pleading for help. BIJNOR: A kidney patient died during dialysis after a power cut halted treatment, and the hospital generator had no fuel, even as an official inspection was underway at the Bijnor district hospital, authorities said on Saturday. Sarfaraz Ahmad, 26, from Phulsanda village, was undergoing dialysis when electricity failed. Hospital staff said they could not resume treatment because the contracted firm had not supplied diesel. CDO Purna Borah, inspecting the hospital at the time of the incident on Friday, found five other patients lying there without power, lights or fans. Sarfaraz's mother told TOI, "When the power went off, the machine stopped midway with almost half his blood stuck inside it. I begged the staff to start the generator, but no one helped. My son died soon after." Medical experts TOI spoke to, however, said it is highly unlikely that a large amount of Sarfaraz's blood could have been inside the machine at any given point. A doctor clarified, "During haemodialysis, only a fraction - about 200 to 250 ml - of blood circulates through the machine at any time. However, an abrupt power failure can delay the process and destabilise critically ill patients" The hospital staff blamed Sanjeevani, the private firm running the unit under a public-private partnership since 2020, for repeatedly failing to supply diesel. DM Jasjit Kaur visited the hospital and seized all dialysis-unit records and assured strict action. Kaur said, "There was mismanagement and no cleanliness in the unit. A case is being registered against the agency. In addition, it will be blacklisted." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
