Praveen Sood Gets 1-Year Extension As CBI Chief Amid Stalemate Over Successor
The tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood is extended for a period of one year beyond 24.05.2025. Sood, who took over as the CBI director on May 25, 2023, for a two-year term, is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre.

The decision to extend his tenure came days after a meeting of the selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The panel comprised Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday, according to media reports.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), based on the recommendations of the selection committee, approved Sood's extension for a period of one year beyond May 24.
Earlier, Sood was working as Karnataka's director general of police (DGP). Later, he was named as the director of the CBI. Born in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district in 1964, Sood joined the IPS at the age of 22 years after completing his civil engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
He also holds a post-graduation degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru, and the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, in New York.
Sood, known for his hands-on approach, had supervised investigations of high-profile cases involving high-net-worth individuals and matters having interstate and international ramifications.
The tech-savvy officer had worked for the strengthening of the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems) and the ICJS (Interoperable Criminal Justice System) in Karnataka along with the judiciary.

Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that an emergency meeting would take place on Monday in light of the developments taking place in West Asia. Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], June 22 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami attended the closing ceremony of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh's 70th foundation day on Sunday. The closing ceremony of 'Swarnim 70 Years' was organised by Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh at the Rishikul Ayurvedic College Auditorium. On attending the Youth Workers Conference, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said, 'Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh has not limited itself to just protecting the interests of labourers, but has also transformed the labour force into a pillar of nation-building. By integrating cultural consciousness, moral values, and social responsibility, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh has paved the way for turning 'Shram Yogis' into 'Rashtra Yogis.' CM Dhami announced the establishment of the Madan Mohan Malviya State Research Institute at the historic Rishikul premises in Haridwar. The institute aims to promote tourism, spirituality, education, Ayurveda, astrology, and meditation. The proposed multidisciplinary centre will offer studies in yoga, meditation, and spiritual sciences, with an eye on boosting spiritual tourism in the region. Speaking at a programme, CM Dhami said that the institute would serve as a significant hub within Rishikul, an institution of great significance, and help connect people to India's ancient knowledge systems. He recalled the BMS's difficult early years, saying it had emerged as a powerful force by standing firmly for Indian culture and workers' rights. He noted that after Independence, despite the country's limited resources, Indian workers played a pivotal role in building the nation. 'Today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our government is working on the mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, and has launched several schemes focused on the welfare of workers,' he said. Highlighting welfare initiatives, CM Dhami said crores of workers have been registered on the government's labour portal, and facilities like ESI, EPFO, and insurance are now being provided. He also mentioned that 75 meritorious children of workers are receiving free technical education, lodging, and meals at the Rudrapur Technical Institute. 'Workers are not just the engines of labour but also architects of the nation,' the Chief Minister said, underlining the critical role of youth in India's vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He pointed out that with 65 per cent of the population below 35 years of age, India stands as the world's youngest country, and programmes like Skill India align youth with employment and self-reliance. Emphasising the Centre's commitment to cultural heritage and worker welfare, Dhami said major reforms have been undertaken, including simplifying 29 complex labour laws into four comprehensive labour codes. Through the e-Shram portal, crores of unorganised sector workers have been formally brought into the system. 'Under the Shramyogi Maandhan Yojana, unorganised sector workers are being provided a pension of Rs 1,000. Our government is ensuring that no worker is neglected or left out of the mainstream of development,' Dhami said. He added that the state government is committed to executing schemes such as housing, health insurance, social security cards, and various initiatives under the Uttarakhand Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. NIA arrests one more accused in Maoists Northern Region Bureau terror revival conspiracy case
ANI 22 Jun 2025, 19:47 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested another key accused in a CPI (Maoist) Northern Region Bureau (NRB) terror revival conspiracy case from Delhi, the probe agency said on Sunday. NIA also seized devices including hard drives, pen drives and mobile phones, as well as other incriminating material during a search in the West Delhi house of the accused, identified as Vishal Singh, originally hailing from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. According to NIA, investigations have revealed that the accused, a member of the CPI (Maoist), had delivered a drone to leaders of the banned terror outfit in Chhakarbanda/Panchrukhiya forest area of Bihar to further its violent anti-national activities. He had imparted technical training to other cadres of CPI (Maoist) and had also attended meetings with its central committee members in the deep forest areas of Bihar in 2019. NIA in August 2024, had arrested another accused, Ajay Singhal alias Aman, in-charge of the State Organising Committee (SOC) Haryana and Punjab of CPI (Maoist). The case relates to the terror organisation's conspiracy to re-energise its decrepit influence in the Northern Regional Bureau (NRB) area, comprising UP, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The conspiracy involves recruitment of cadres and strengthening of the organisation in the region through underground cadres working in urban areas, along with some Over Ground Workers (OGWs) operating in the guise of activists, the probe agency said. Several front organisations and student wings have been used to prepare the ground for promoting the conspiracy, aimed at waging war against the Government of India. They were receiving funds from the outfit's Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB), particularly from Jharkhand. Further investigation is underway. (ANI)
