WATCH: Former Ohio State golfer eagles Par 4 on opening hole of U.S. Open
For those golf fans out there, another major event has come to a television or streaming device near you in the form of the U.S. Open. Things got started at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday, and former Ohio State golfer Maxwell Moldovan is a part of all the action once again.
That in itself is newsworthy, but even more noteworthy is how Moldovan opened up the tournament. He hit a drive in a good spot off of tee No. 1, then proceeded to knock one stiff onto the green on the Par 4 hole. What happened next would be hard to believe if there weren't cameras to catch the action. The ball rolled onto the green and slowly made its way to the hole, where it trickled in for a two-shot eagle to open his round of the 125th U.S. Open.
If you didn't get a chance to catch this unbelievable shot, you can re-live it thanks to the U.S. Open "X" account (formerly Twitter).
Unfortunately for Moldovan, he couldn't keep a consistent round going and shot an opening round 76 (+6) and sits in a tie for No. 99 as the field gets ready for the second round on Friday. He is right on the projected cut line, so there is work to do coming home on Friday if Moldovan wants to make it to the third round on Saturday.

Ohio State Gets Good News on Highly Touted Star

Ohio State Gets Good News on Highly Touted Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The best official visits end with high school prospects leaving campus dreaming about playing for that college football program. Based on the latest recruiting news, the Ohio State Buckeyes achieved that goal with five-star edge rusher Carter Meadows. Advertisement Meadows shared with On3's Mick Walker that he can picture himself with the Buckeyes. 'My favorite part was definitely learning about the culture of 'Fight' that I can definitely see myself fitting in with,' said Meadows. Walker portrayed the edge rusher as needing more time to make his final recruitment decision. But Walker also described the Buckeyes as "well-positioned" for Meadows. 'They are definitely high on my list and for good reason,' added Meadows. Meadows is among the top-rated players in the 2026 recruiting class with On3 giving the pass rusher a five-star rating. Advertisement This weekend, the edge rusher will meet with the Michigan Wolverines. On3 has Meadows ranked very high in the 2026 recruiting class. In fact, On3's rankings placed Meadows at No. 2 among edge rushers and sixth overall in the entire class. The 247Sports Composite rankings considers Meadows an elite prospect as well. However, he's a four-star recruit on the site's ratings. On both lists, Meadows is the top 2026 recruit in the District of Columbia. Ohio State is trying to add Meadows to its growing list of recruiting success stories in the mid-Atlantic. In the 2017 recruiting class, the Buckeyes landed No. 1 Maryland recruit and seventh-overall prospect Chase Young. Advertisement Young eventually became the No. 2 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. Alabama Dealt Disappointing Recruiting News on Thursday

Alabama Dealt Disappointing Recruiting News on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Earlier this week, Alabama Crimson Tide football fans were on cloud nine after 2026 four-star quarterback Jett Thomalla decommitted from the Iowa State Cyclones and swore his allegiance to head coach Kalen DeBoer in Tuscaloosa. Advertisement However, many fans have likely come back down to Earth after the 2026 class took a massive hit on Thursday. Shortly after he visited the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2026, four-star linebacker Cincere Johnson verbally committed to the Big Ten power. Johnson had only taken three visits, taking trips to Alabama and the Penn State Nittany Lions in May. Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoerVasha Hunt-Imagn Images Nick Osen and Bill Kurelic predicted Johnson would land with Ohio State but had the Crimson Tide lurking in the shadows. The Cleveland native will visit the USC Trojans on Friday despite his recent commitment. Johnson had a monster junior season with Glenville High School in 2024, totaling 121 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and three forced fumbles. Advertisement The four-star's decision to pass on Alabama means head coach Kalen DeBoer has just two verbal commits from a pass rusher in the 2026 class. Jamarion Matthews and Kamhariyan Johnson represent the 2026 edge players, while Alabama does not commit a second-level defender. Their lone secondary commit is five-star corner Jorden Edmonds. The Tide has just seven hard commits for 2026, ranking 45th in 247Sports' rankings. Nevertheless, Alabama and DeBoer will welcome the fourth-ranked recruiting class this fall, headlined by superstar prospect and quarterback Keelon Russell. He finished as the second-ranked quarterback recruit in 2025, trailing just Bryce Underwood of the Michigan Wolverines. Travelers: Adam Scott Ties Career Low Despite Changes to PGA Tour Schedule

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Adam Scott had to recover quickly from an extraordinarily difficult final round of the U.S. Open. Like most of his peers, he didn't have much time to heal his physical and emotional wounds because he had to play in the Travelers Championship the following week. At TPC River Highlands, Scott seemed to still be affected by what he experienced at Oakmont. However, that concern was put to rest during the third round. The Australian tied his PGA Tour career-low record on Moving Day, shooting a 62. "It was all good today. The big difference was I putted nicely right out of the gate," he said. "Made one on 1, freed up a little bit there. So, I believe I'm playing this well, but you've got to make some putts at the end of the day to shoot a number, so that was the difference between the first two days and today." I knew I was going to have to play this week." "I actually think now the last couple years, having these Signature Events after majors, not that I've been in contention at all the majors, but like having to change my habits a little bit." "For my whole career I pretty much took every week off after a major, and all of a sudden we're playing big events right on the back of it." The PGA Tour has been using the strategy of scheduling Signature Events the week after major championships. For example, the RBC Heritage was played after the Masters Tournament, the Memorial Tournament after the PGA Championship, and the Travelers Championship after the U.S. Open. He seems to like this place! Adam Scott matches his career-low of 62, which came most recently at the #TravelersChamp in 2023. — TravelersChamp (@TravelersChamp) June 21, 2025 The Open Championship is the only major that will not be followed by an elevated event. Top players will have three weeks to recover before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Adam Scott carded an eagle, seven birdies, and a bogey during the third round of the Travelers Championship, climbing more than 30 spots on the leaderboard. He improved his performance by 10 strokes compared to the previous rounds, in which he had carded consecutive 72s. He entered the final round of the US Open tied for second, but he was just another victim of Oakmont Country Club. He shot a final round 79, with one birdie, eight bogeys, and one double bogey, to finish in a tie for 12th place. More Golf: Justin Thomas Joins Scottie Scheffler atop Travelers Championship
