Ohio State coach Jake Diebler, former players, praise family culture, expectations at OSU
Ohio State coach Jake Diebler, former players, praise family culture, expectations at OSU The Ohio State basketball program welcomed in some former players for "Vet Week" over the last few days. It's been a great opportunity for the current players on the roster to connect with some of the legends and players that have donned the Scarlet and Gray in the past for some teaching, competition, and camaraderie. One of the things those close to and inside the program always appreciate is the expectations and the family culture through the years. It's clear that the expectations haven't been met over the last decade or so, but head coach Jake Diebler is trying to change that. One thing that has not waned is the family atmosphere, hence all of the former guys coming back to the banks of the Olentangy to be a part of this week. On Thursday, Diebler and the former players spoke to the current roster to let them know about being a part of an extended family and where the program should be going forward. It was a tough love type of moment, especially when the players talked. "The family part of this program is one of my favorite things. It's real," Diebler said. "When we're playing in -- I don't care where -- there's going to be former players in the building and always watching. Their care level is elite. Care just as much as these guys care, because if you do, we'll do something special ..."Many of the guys right here are the ones that put those numbers (accolades) on the wall. You getting to wear Ohio State is the privilege of a lifetime. And our job is just to hold you to that standard." You can watch the rest of the messaging, including guys like Scoonie Penn, D'Angelo Russel, and JJ Sullinger looking to hold the team accountable. Here's to hoping all of this messaging, optimism, and hard work translates to more wins this season, one that results in some of those special things Diebler and the former players were talking about. WATCH: Highlights of Ohio State football's newest linebacker commit, Cincere Johnson
The Ohio State football recruiting efforts paid off in a big way on Thursday when 4-star linebacker Cincere Johnson announced his commitment to the Buckeyes. Out of the pipeline that is Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 240-pound Johnson should continue to make the linebacker room in Columbus a very good one for years to come. It's one thing to just hear about a commitment's recruiting service ranking and feel good about what the Buckeyes have landed; it's another to be able to get eyes on video highlights to see what he can bring to the program. We like to pull the previous high school season highlights from our friends at Hudl to provide you with some tangible evidence or what a commitment has done, and it's no different here. Advertisement Johnson should bring size, speed, and versatility to the linebacking unit. He's a top-notch tackler, but can also come off the edge to provide pressure and disruption. Ohio State football staff tightens players' lead in 'June Olympics' after winning Euchre
Ohio State football staff tightens players' lead in 'June Olympics' after winning Euchre The Ohio State football program continued its summer competition it's calling the "June Olympics," on Monday. What better way to pass the time during the dead period than a friendly competition of various sports and games between the players and staff? To date, the players have had the upper hand, going into the latest event with a 5-3 lead. The latest competition stepped outside of the physical, athletic realm and dove into card playing. It's just the sort of competition the older staff members likely needed after falling behind by two points because of a dodgeball win by the players last week. And, wouldn't you know it, the staff came through, winning a Euchre competition to pull to within one point at 5-4. It had a lot of drama with the score nip and tuck until the staff took the momentum at the end to tighten things up. You can get the highlights of the win thanks to the "X" account (formerly Twitter) of Ohio State Football below. As always, we're not sure what the next event is, or even how many competitions are set to take place in the month of June, but so far, we've been getting a look at an "Olympic event" every other day or so. We'll see what the future holds and if the staff can even things up, or if the players again put a little separation between themselves and the guys with a little seasoning on their ages. WATCH: Former Ohio State golfer eagles Par 4 on opening hole of U.S. Open
For those golf fans out there, another major event has come to a television or streaming device near you in the form of the U.S. Open. Things got started at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday, and former Ohio State golfer Maxwell Moldovan is a part of all the action once again. That in itself is newsworthy, but even more noteworthy is how Moldovan opened up the tournament. He hit a drive in a good spot off of tee No. 1, then proceeded to knock one stiff onto the green on the Par 4 hole. What happened next would be hard to believe if there weren't cameras to catch the action. The ball rolled onto the green and slowly made its way to the hole, where it trickled in for a two-shot eagle to open his round of the 125th U.S. Open. Advertisement If you didn't get a chance to catch this unbelievable shot, you can re-live it thanks to the U.S. Open "X" account (formerly Twitter). Unfortunately for Moldovan, he couldn't keep a consistent round going and shot an opening round 76 (+6) and sits in a tie for No. 99 as the field gets ready for the second round on Friday. He is right on the projected cut line, so there is work to do coming home on Friday if Moldovan wants to make it to the third round on Saturday.
