Moroccan teen drowns saving tourists in Italy, no thanks from victims

A 16-year-old Moroccan teenager tragically drowned after jumping into the sea to save two tourists struggling in the water near Lido degli Estensi beach in Italy, where swimming is banned due to strong currents. Aymane, who wasn't a strong swimmer, didn't hesitate when he heard cries for help. He rushed into the water to rescue a 30-year-old Ukrainian man and a 20-year-old Moldovan woman. One of his friends, Mohamed, followed with a life jacket but quickly ran into trouble himself. He managed to pull himself and Aymane back toward a jet ski, but Aymane slipped away and disappeared beneath the waves. His body was found several hours later. Despite his heroic actions, the two tourists showed no reaction and left the scene without so much as a word to the family—no thanks, no apology. That silence has deeply upset Aymane's relatives and friends. Italian police are now trying to track the pair down to question them. «He sacrificed his life to save them, yet they didn't even reach out with a word of thanks or apology», Mohamed told local media. Aymane had been out with friends celebrating after passing the written part of his middle school exams. He was preparing for the oral exam in the days ahead. «He was so happy that day. It was his first time going out on a jet ski», Mohamed added. The only public recognition came from Italian authorities. Senate President Ignazio La Russa praised Aymane's act as «a symbol of courage and selflessness in an extraordinary young man». Still reeling from the loss, Aymane's father is unsure whether to bury his son in Italy or return his body to Morocco. «Everyone knows he was a quiet boy who loved life», he said.
