Shooting saw passer-by used as 'human shield'
A man has been jailed after firing a gun during disorder in Birmingham last year – which saw his apparent target use a passer-by as a "human shield", police have said.
West Midlands Police released CCTV, which officers said showed Kye Lemathy "recklessly shooting his gun, despite pedestrians walking by", in Aston on 12 October.
At one point, the man he appeared to have been shooting at held a passer-by as a "human shield" to prevent Lemathy firing again, officers said.
The 21-year-old, from Holte Road, Perry Barr, had admitted possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life at Birmingham Crown Court and was jailed for nine years and nine months on 3 June.
Officers had been called to the brawl at the junction of Witton Road and Endicott Road, just after 19:45 GMT.
Those involved in the disorder had left, but police discovered evidence that showed a gun had been fired.
Investigators also found Lemathy had been stabbed in the fight and had taken himself to hospital.
The force later recovered CCTV that showed the disorder taking place.
They arrested and questioned Lemathy after he was discharged from hospital.

Police pull over 33 vehicles in Wednesbury and find 30 offences
A motorist was arrested on suspicion of drug driving during a police road safety crackdown in Wednesbury. Yesterday's police operation saw 33 vehicles pulled over in the town and more than 30 traffic offenses reported. One driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and using a vehicle in a dangerous condition. Four vehicles were seized and six prohibited from being used on the roads. A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We seized vehicles and made an arrest during a road safety operation in Wednesbury yesterday, June 18. "Our teams carried out the targeted activity - along with partner agencies - on routes in and around the town centre. "It led to 33 vehicles being pulled over, more than 30 traffic offences being reported, and one arrest on suspicion of drug driving and using a vehicle in a dangerous condition. "The traffic offences included having tinted windows, no licence, no insurance, not wearing a seatbelt, illegal tyres and using a mobile phone at the wheel. "There were four vehicles seized and six prohibited from being used on the roads. "The multi-agency traffic operation involved our Road Harm Prevention Team, Wednesbury Neighbourhood Team, Sandwell Council Road Safety Team, Sandwell Council Waste Carrier Team, Sandwell Council Taxi Licensing Team and DVSA. "We regularly conduct road operations working with communities and partners to create safer roads for everyone, and deterring criminals who abuse the road network. "Your safety is our number one priority and we are committed to reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads. "It comes as the Safer6 campaign is running across the borough with partners working together to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour, and deal with other issues that matter to residents across the six towns."

Los Angeles mayor lifts curfew imposed after immigration raids, protests
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Tuesday lifted a curfew imposed on part of the city's downtown to curb crime in the wake of raids on undocumented migrants that prompted protests. The restriction on people's movements went into place last Tuesday, affecting about one square mile of the city's downtown between 8 p.m. local time (0300 GMT on Wednesday) and 6 a.m. the following morning. On Monday, Bass said the curfew would be reduced, with a later start time of 10pm, as acts of violence, vandalism and looting had markedly declined. On Tuesday, it fully ended. "The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community," she said in a statement. The heightened immigration enforcement in the city prompted the strongest backlash to President Donald Trump since he returned to power in January, pitting the Republican enacting a campaign pledge to deport immigrants against Democratic leaders in California who opposed the tactics.
