Over 44,000 pounds of shrimp recalled due to possible listeria contamination
A seafood company has issued a recall on its Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat due to a potential listeria contamination.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall from Bornstein Seafoods Inc., which affects 44,550 pounds of shrimp, after a routine sampling detected listeria monocytogenes.
As noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria is a 'bacteria that can contaminate many foods.' Although symptoms can vary, a listeria infection 'can cause invasive illness and intestinal illness.'
Listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States, killing roughly 260 people per year.
According to the FDA's report, the shrimp was sold in either one-pound or five-pound bags and was distributed to retailers in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia of Canada.
The affected bags of shrimp are listed alongside the product's UPC code and lot number in the report. No illnesses have currently been reported.
All customers who have purchased the affected bags of shrimp are urged to return them to the place of purchase in exchange for a full refund. Any questions regarding the recall can be directed to the company using the email address Andrew@bornstein.com.
The recall came on the same day P. East Trading Corp. recalled its Salted Smoked Split Herring because it may have been contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause illness or death.
Botulism is a rare but serious condition caused by a toxin that attacks the body's nerves. Symptoms include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, abdominal distension, and constipation.
There have been no reported illnesses so far.
The last two years have also seen an alarming and unexplained rise in recalls. In 2024, approximately 300 food recalls were issued, with those recalls being linked to nearly 1,400 illnesses, a Public Interest Research Group report revealed.
Out of the 1,400 illnesses, 487 people became sick enough to require hospitalization, and 19 people died. While those numbers are still low when weighed against the entire U.S. population, they are also double the number of hospitalizations and deaths from food-borne illnesses in 2023.

Novo Nordisk ends Wegovy sales on Hims & Hers over "deceptive marketing"
Novo Nordisk is pulling the plug on its partnership with Hims & Hers Health over claims that the telehealth company sold fake versions of the pharmaceutical firm's weight-loss drug, Wegovy. The Danish drugmaker said Monday that Wegovy will no longer be available on Hims & Hers and that it is ending the collaboration because the San Francisco-based online health company sold "illegitimate, knockoff versions of Wegovy that put patient safety at risk." Novo Nordisk's move to dissolve the partnership came less than two months after the companies said they were entering a "long-term collaboration" to make obesity treatment more accessible. Shares of Hims & Hers plunged more than $20, or roughly 31%, to $44.10 following Novo Nordisk's announcement. Hims & Hers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Novo Nordisk said it began selling Wegovy via telehealth companies, including Hims & Hers, after a nationwide shortage of the drug. In offering the drug through more retailers, Novo Nordisk said it wanted to shift patients from using "knock-off, compounded versions" of Wegovy to the Food and Drug Administration-approved semaglutide drug. "After over one month into the collaboration, Hims & Hers Health, Inc. has failed to adhere to the law which prohibits mass sales of compounded drugs under the false guise of 'personalization' and are disseminating deceptive marketing that put patient safety at risk," a Novo Nordisk spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch. "This is unacceptable, and that is why we have decided to end the collaboration." The FDA approved Wegovy for adults with obesity in March 2024, adding it to an expanding market of weight-loss drugs that include Ozempic and Mounjaro. Demand for GLP-1 drugs, which are used to treat diabetes and weight loss, has surged in recent years, with one in eight U.S. adults saying they've used the treatments, according to health research publisher KFF. In its release, Novo Nordisk said a company investigation showed that the ingredients in knock-off drugs sold by telehealth entities and compounding pharmacies are manufactured by foreign suppliers in China and that a large share of the drugs were never inspected by the FDA. "U.S. patients should not be exposed to knock-off drugs made with unsafe and illicit foreign ingredients," Novo Nordisk said. Novo Nordisk will continue to sell Wegovy on other telehealth platforms that "share our commitment to patient safety," said Dave Moore, executive vice president at Novo Nordisk, in the company's statement. Trader Joe's Cheese Recall in Two States as Warning Issued
Face Rock Creamery voluntarily recalled two lots of its "Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar Curds" from Trader Joe's stores in northern California and northern Nevada this week after routine product tests revealed possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The company, headquartered in Bandon, Oregon, recalled its product on June 20 but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to classify the recall. Newsweek has contacted Face Rock Creamery outside of regular working hours via email for comment. Listeria monocytogenes infection, or listeriosis, may lead to high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The bacterium poses a greater risk to young children, elderly people, those with compromised immune systems, and pregnant women, who may experience miscarriages or stillbirths if infected. The Cleveland Clinic has identified soft cheeses, deli meats and unpasteurized dairy products as some of the foods that are more likely to be contaminated with listeria. The issue was discovered during routine sampling, which detected Listeria monocytogenes in finished product samples. Face Rock Creamery notified the FDA and the Oregon Department of Agriculture and is continuing to work to identify the source of the contamination. The affected product, "Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar Curds," were sold in 6-ounce sealed plastic cups with a lid and have a "Use By" date of August 29, 2025. The product has a Universal Product Code of 8 51222 00528 7 and lot numbers 20250519VS01 and 20250519VS02. The product was distributed at Trader Joe's stores in northern California (including locations in Monterey, Fresno, and all areas north) and northern Nevada (specifically in Carson City, Reno and Sparks). As of the latest update, no consumers have reported any illnesses linked to the recalled product. Face Rock Creamery said in its announcement: "Face Rock Creamery is committed to ensuring the safety and quality of our products and is working closely with our distribution partners and regulatory agencies to resolve the matter swiftly and thoroughly. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate the trust our customers place in us." Cleveland Clinic says on its website: "Listeria is a bacterial infection that's more dangerous during pregnancy. It can cause pregnancy loss, lifelong illness in your child and newborn death. It causes flu-like and digestive symptoms. Avoiding foods like deli meats, soft cheeses and unpasteurized milk can reduce your risk." Anyone who purchased the affected product is strongly advised to refrain from consuming it and to return the product to the original point of purchase for a full refund. The company said in a press release that Hims & Hers failed to follow law "prohibiting mass sales of compounded drugs under the false guise of 'personalization' and are disseminating deceptive marketing that put patient safety at risk." "We expected that the efforts towards compounding personalization would diminish over time. When we didn't see that, we had to make a choice on behalf of patients," said Dave Moore, Novo Nordisk's executive vice president of U.S. operations. An investigation found that the drugs sold were manufactured by foreign suppliers in China and the FDA never authorized or approved the processes used by any foreign suppliers, according to a report from the Brookings Institute. Novo Nordisk entered partnerships with telehealth companies after the FDA in April resolved its Wegovy shortage, concluding that Novo Nordisk is meeting the demand of this medicine. Hims & Hers CEO Andrew Dudum said the company gives providers and patients choices in treatments. "Ultimately, what is right for them is their own discretion," he said. "I think we strongly believe it's really important that we maintain that independence." Novo Nordisk said it will continue offering the branded version of Wegovy through organizations that "share our commitment to safe and effective medical treatment for patients living with chronic diseases." "These medicines that are coming into our country from sources around the world are not even approved in those countries that they originated from, and it's a problem," Moore said.
