Stokes adamant Archer 'desperate' for England return
Archer enjoyed a spectacular start with England in 2019. The Barbados-born fast bowler played a key role in the team's 50-over World Cup final win at Lord's and made his presence felt in a dramatic drawn Ashes series with Australia.
For all his undeniable talent, a succession of injury problems have blighted the Sussex speedster's career. Archer played the last of his 13 Tests in February 2021.
England have kept faith with Archer. He is due to make his first-class return for Sussex against Durham on Sunday as part of a plan that could see him feature during a five-match series with India that starts at Headingley on Friday.
Archer's latest rehabilitation has been delayed by a broken thumb, although that did not stop the 30-year-old pushing for what might have been a rushed return in last month's one-off Test against Zimbabwe.
"He's been absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on," Stokes told a pre-match press conference at Headingley on Thursday. "Randomly, a couple of times, he would just send me a text saying, 'Zim?'
"I was like, 'let's just hold it there, all right. I know you're in a good spot right now, but let's not just rush into it'."
Stokes added: "He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries, but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats.
"It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket."
Express quick Archer's return would be a boost to England's attack as they prepare to face two major rivals over the next seven months, with an Ashes tour of Australia following the India series.
Were he to become an Ashes-winning skipper 'Down Under', Stokes would join a select group of England captains, although the all-rounder himself says he is not concerned by his place in cricket history.
"Defining a career as England captain isn't something that I sit there and really think about, honestly," he said. "If that's what I'm really bothered about, in my opinion it's just completely and utterly selfish and that ain't me."

Dropping Pope for India Test would have been 'remarkable', says England's Stokes
There were suggestions vice-captain Pope and rising star Jacob Bethell were vying for the same batting spot in the first game of a five-Test series at Headingley, starting on Friday. Bethell impressed on England's New Zealand tour in November and December before Pope underlined his credentials with a mammoth century during an innings victory against Zimbabwe last month. Bethell missed that match, opting instead to play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. "In this day and age it's very tough not to see all that speculation, just because of how easily accessible things are," said the captain. "You don't even have to go and hunt for it. "But I think scoring 170 in his last Test match has sort of shown how well he's handled that extra scrutiny." The match at Headingley signals the start of a new World Test Championship cycle, just days after South Africa defeated Australia in a memorable final at Lord's. Stokes has been a longtime critic of the WTC's format, labelling it "utterly confusing", and England will once again play the most Tests over the next two years. Gattuso convinced Italy can reach World Cup
Italy are at risk of missing out on a third consecutive World Cup after a troubled start to their qualifying campaign which has left them nine points behind Group I leaders Norway and cost Spalletti his job. Asked whether he had more hope or conviction that Italy could reach next year's finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico, Gattuso said: "conviction". "I believe that we have good players available to us. We have four or five who are among the top 10 in the world in their position," added Gattuso. "We have a good team, but I do mean team, I'm not thinking about individuals. I'm convinced that the team has quality and I'm convinced that we can achieve our goal." Gattuso has a tough job on his hands with only top spot in the group giving automatic qualification to the World Cup, even with Italy having played two fewer games than Norway. As well as the significant points gap Italy have a goal difference which is 12 goals worse than Norway, who hammered Italy 3-0 earlier in June. That leaves Italy with the play-offs, from which they failed to reach the last two tournaments, as their only realistic shot at qualification. And I every time I faced his Milan or Napoli team I could tell that was the case."
