3 East Lancs organisations up for grant from business aiming to 'make world better'
Three East Lancashire organisations have been shortlisted for a grant as a Colne business looks to 'leave the world in a better place than they found it'.
West Craven Warriors, Salesbury Primary School and Pendle Forest Hockey Club have all been shortlisted for the grant, worth up to £500, from PatchApp.
After receiving almost 100 applications to the fund, 15 organisations have now been put forward to the public vote, which will see the top five selected to receive the money.
PatchApp is a start-up home maintenance tech company operating across the North West and Yorkshire and was founded by Paul White and Conor Walsh.
Co-founder Paul White said: 'We're committed to leaving the world in a better place than we found it, and that's what drives a lot of what we do. We wanted to reach right into the heart of the communities we serve, and we thought that our Local Community Fund was the best way to do this'.
Pendle Forest Hockey Club was founded in 1967 and currently boasts three women's teams and a junior section for boys and girls.
Money received from the fund will be used on a coach training program, aimed at the juniors' sections.
Additionally, money will be contributed to new goalkeeper equipment.
Elsewhere, Salesbury Primary School will use the money to purchase new atlases and learning resources.
This aims to support learning and topic work across the school and to develop young people's skills and widen the range of learning they can offer.
Finally, West Craven Warriors is a volunteer-run Rugby League club based in Barnoldswick and provides coaching to juniors.
All rugby sessions at the club are completely free and are funded by fundraising events, food sales and grants.
A West Craven spokesperson said: 'We strive and are proud that the club is open to the whole community and no one is excluded.
'Not only do we provide rugby coaching, we also put on many team events where the juniors can come along and have fun with their teammates.'
PatchApp services are carried out by former members of the Armed Forces, who they with to ensure they have good, stable careers when they leave the Armed Forces.

Conor added 'The number of applications has been staggering, and it's been fantastic to see the wonderful work that is going on across the region.
'It's really heartening to see that there are so many people who care about their local communities. It's great to see so many finalists from Lancashire, our home County too'.
The public vote closes this Thursday evening, June 5, at midnight. Anyone can vote on the Community Fund page on the company's website.
Organisations can still apply for a grant, with a shortlist of organisations drawn up each month, which will then go to a public vote.

United Way of Coastal Empire raised $9 million for region during 2025 campaign
The United Way of the Coastal Empire (UWCE) announced at a celebration on Tuesday evening that it had raised $9 million through its 2024-25 campaign. Nearly $5 million of that amount will be directed to the United Way's Community Fund, which, in part, channels resources back into the five-county service region by supporting nonprofits that provide services, such as affordable childcare, stable housing and financial empowerment for families. Another nearly $3 million will go towards grants, disaster relief funds and more. 'United Way's mission, as many of us know, is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community,' said UWCE CEO Kimberly Waller during the ceremony held at the Peregrin rooftop bar at the Perry Lane Hotel. 'And we do that by providing a strong safety net for the most vulnerable and creating pathways for upward mobility.' Three Savannah-based corporate donors―Gulfstream Aerospace, Colonial Group and Georgia Ports Authority― contributed more than half a million dollars each to the campaign. Gulfstream alone raised $1 million. 'After storms hit our area this past year, Gulfstream stepped up in a big way when we needed them most,' Waller said. Following the three storms last fall, UWCE activated its Rapid Response Disaster Fund, which, with $1 million in donations, helped provide hot meals to 3,700 people in need. 'This has been an incredible experience, and I'm deeply grateful for everyone who contributed to the success of this year's campaign,' said Yancey Ford, the 2025 campaign chair and Effingham County Schools Superintendent. UWCE kicked off its campaign in September 2024 with several performances from regional high school bands. The annual Turkey Trot, held on the morning of Thanksgiving, broke the event's record by raising more than $50,000 for the community fund. In March, the annual Women Who Rule campaign netted more than $105,000 for the Women United Transportation Fund, more than 25% of that sum was raised during a luncheon—a record-breaking amount that was collected through donations from people in the room. Community groups and charities invited to apply for Co-op funding
Community groups and charities can now apply for a share of £5 million from Co-op's Local Community Fund. The fund seeks to support causes across the UK that "help people and communities thrive," with a focus on improving access to food; mental wellbeing; youth opportunities; community cohesion; and sustainability. David Luckin, head of community partnerships, funding, and impact at Co-op, said: "It's always exciting to start the search for local causes to take part in a new round of funding. "Our members have told us that they want Co-op to focus on the real issues affecting people's lives, and act on the issues that matter most. "We know that things are increasingly challenging for communities, and through this funding, we can make a difference locally and help people and communities to thrive." Since 2016, the fund has supported more than 39,000 projects across the UK. Applications for the latest round of funding are open until Sunday, July 6.
