Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch's ‘difficult' admission after Panthers series

The post Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch's 'difficult' admission after Panthers series appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Edmonton Oilers have shown admirable determination during these last two seasons, erasing deficits and winning the Western Conference in back-to-back years, but this run is ultimately defined by agonizing outcomes in the Stanley Cup Final. Fair or not, this franchise's inability to defeat the Florida Panthers will overshadow the other accomplishments. Advertisement For the second straight year, Edmonton watched the Cats reach the top of the hockey world in Amerant Bank Arena. Following Tuesday's 5-1 Game 6 loss, another grueling reflection period awaits. The organization will have to figure out what it can do to possibly vanquish this powerhouse. Of course, returning to this stage is no guarantee given the parity that exists throughout the West. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch does not care to look ahead. The heartache is strong. 'There's no silver lining to this, it's very difficult to handle right now,' he told the media at the postgame press conference. 'It hurts right now and I don't think it's gonna let up for a while.' The Oilers enjoy one heck of a year, but the season ends in the same dissatisfying way Edmonton worked hard to get to this point. Connor McDavid suffered a lower-body injury early in the regular season and still finished sixth in points. Leon Draisaitl seized the Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy and came in second in the Hart Memorial Trophy voting. Goalies Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard each enjoyed huge triumphs along the way. Advertisement The Oilers overcame a 2-0 series deficit versus the Los Angeles Kings in the opening round of the playoffs and pushed their way to a series-tying Game 4 victory against the Panthers. But that undying perseverance was not enough to lead them to the Cup. That is not to discredit what Kris Knoblauch has achieved since taking over as HC during last season. He has boosted this franchise to heights it had not seen in two decades. Despite the offensive firepower this group possesses, Edmonton was simply outmatched in this Final. Perhaps that would not be the case if injured left winger Zach Hyman was on the ice, but Florida deserves its flowers for outlasting the rest of the league once again. Knoblauch and the Oilers will think about how they had a golden opportunity to take control of the series with a Game 5 win at home, before eventually getting outscored by seven goals across the last six periods. That is just human nature. However, once the pain subsides, Edmonton must use this disappointment as the last bit of motivation it needs to finally bring Lord Stanley's Cup back to Rogers Place. Or, will this latest high-stakes shortcoming break this team's renowned fighting spirit? We shall see. Chris Broussard makes contender claim after Magic's Desmond Bane trade

The post Chris Broussard makes contender claim after Magic's Desmond Bane trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Orlando Magic pulled off a big trade, sending Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and four first-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Desmond Bane. It's a move that gives the organization a big upgrade at the perimeter, and it sounds like NBA analyst Chris Broussard is a huge fan of this move. Advertisement During the latest episode of 'First Things First,' on Fox Sports 1, Broussard declared the Magic are now contenders after trading for Bane. He also explains how the trade is a good move for the Grizzlies, who acquired plenty of assets to work with for years to come. 'I love [this trade] for Orlando… I'll take the Magic to be a contender in the East… The one thing [the Magic] couldn't do this year was shoot. They were dead last in the league in threes, 31.0%, which is abysmal… Now you add one of the best three-point shooters in the league. [Desmond Bane] is 41.0% for his career.' Broussard also credits Bane for his abilities as a perimeter defender. The Magic seemingly added a star-caliber player to a roster that made the playoffs this season. It's a move that gives Orlando a talented 26-year-old guard to play alongside Paulo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs. Advertisement Giving up four first-round selections is a steep price for any team. But the Magic are making moves to win now. Additionally, the ages of the players on the roster are still relatively young. So, not having a first-round pick for the next few years shouldn't be detrimental to the development of the roster. Bane has been rather consistent throughout his career with the Grizzlies. He's been the No. 3 option behind Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. That likely won't change now that he's with the Magic, and he's potentially going to be the top three-point option for Orlando. Bane ended the 2024-25 regular season averaging 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game while shooting 48.4% from the floor and 39.2% from beyond the arc. Phil Foden had a goal and an assist in the game, though everything didn't go perfectly to plan as Rico Lewis was sent off in the 88th minute for a tackle on Samuel Obeng. Guardiola called the referee's decision to show a straight red card, 'unnecessary.' MORE — How much prize money will each club get at Club World Cup? 'His leg was little bit high, but he was on the grass,' Guardiola said after the game. 'Touches the ball with the speed that they go through, your leg has to be a little bit high and the other player down. It was not intentional and it was a red card versus Crystal Palace after the referee came and said it wasn't a red card. Rico never had intention to hurt anyone. A little bit unnecessary, the red card. The referee is the boss and had other intentions, VAR checked it and we have to accept the decision.' Manchester City team news, focus OUT: Mateo Kovacic (foot) Al Ain team news, focus Al Ain found themselves 4-0 down to Juventus at halftime and ended up losing their opening game 5-0 as Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao each scored twice, along with Kenan Yildiz. 33-year-old Togolese striker Kodjo Laba, who led Al Ain this season with 20 goals in 21 games, had most of his side's best chances to score but two of his three shots were saved rather well. Manchester City vs Al Ain prediction In a sense, the Club World Cup is perfectly timed for Man City, who already had a handful of new players that need to get acclimated before next season, so the intensity (and quality) from them remains incredibly high. That spells bad news for Al Ain, and maybe everyone else in the competition. Manchester City 4-0 Al Ain.
