Pablo Torre's Bill Belichick reporting sparks a fresh feud with Bill Simmons

NBC Sports02-06-2025

The story that keeps on giving keeps finding new ways to give.
Pablo Torre's thorough and detailed reporting on former Patriots coach Bill Belichick's decidedly un-Belichickian late-career turn has generated plenty of attention. And, as Belichick and Jordon Hudson have learned, with attention comes scrutiny.
Ben Axelrod of AwfulAnnouncing.com explains that Boston native, Patriots superfan, and ultra-popular podcast host Bill Simmons took a few shots at Torre during a study of the ridiculously far-fetched 1978 football film, Heaven Can Wait, in which Warren Beatty's character (Rams quarterback Joe Pendleton) dies too soon, enters the body of multimillionaire Leo Farnsworth as rectification for the error, buys the team, and makes himself the starting quarterback in advance of the Super Bowl.
'Pablo Torre would've done a long podcast about Leo Farnsworth trying to practice with the team, and then done a media tour about it afterwards,' Simmons said. 'I've never seen anybody dine on a stupider story for a week and a half while pretending you're a journalist. What the fuck was that? Seriously.'
Added Simmons: 'Belichick's dating a girl. 'Oh, let me do nine shows about it.' Settle the fuck down.'
The Torre media tour wasn't planned. People wanted to talk to him about the Belichick story. That's how he ended up on #PFTPM last week; I asked him to do it.
The reason was simple. People can't get enough of the story. Our traffic proves it, over and over again.
For instance, our top four stories for May 2025 related to Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend/handler/publicist/idea mill/creative muse Jordon Hudson.
But while a certain amount of flak from others in the media is to be expected for anyone whose success sparks natural and predictable resentment, Torre appears to be ready to engage Simmons.
'Since you have such a strong public opinion about my work,' Torre said to Simmons on Twitter, 'I happen to have a few questions for you, specifically. Unless you're afraid of [Pablo Torre Finds Out] and someone just 'pretending to be a journalist,' of course.'
We don't know what the questions are. We don't know whether Simmons will answer them. But we know that, if Pablo Torre becomes sufficiently curious about something, he'll make it his mission to find out.

Latest report on Jalen Ramsey should end any speculation about trade to Panthers

"The Dolphins continue to have conversations about trading Jalen will be traded and I would expect it to happen before Training Camp" ~ @AdamSchefter #PMSLive Jalen Ramsey may be far too big of a fish to catch for the Carolina Panthers. With Ramsey and his Miami Dolphins seemingly on the outs, a handful of teams have been linked to a potential acquisition of the three-time All-Pro cornerback. Among the proposed suitors have been the Panthers, who hold a pretty intriguing link to the 30-year-old defender. Speculation regarding a trade to Carolina grew when Ramsey, in a Twitter/X post from May, praised Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero—Ramsey's position coach from their days with the Los Angeles Rams. Since that tweet, analysts and fans alike have considered the Panthers as a possible buyer. But that hype train has been losing steam. Last week, Joe Person of The Athletic opined that the Panthers wouldn't be "inclined" to pursue either of Ramsey or fellow big-name cornerback Jaire Alexander. (He's already one-for-one.) And now, following a new bit of reporting from ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, hopeful Panthers fans might want to move on from the idea of reeling in Ramsey. Here's the latest on the situation from Schefter, who appeared on The Pat McAfee Show this past Friday . . . Ramsey already spent four seasons with the Rams, including the team's Super Bowl-winning campaign in 2021. That, again, is where he crossed paths with Evero—who served as Los Angeles' secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator that year. So, it feels like there might be a reunion in the works for Ramsey—but just not with Evero. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

NFL Draft analyst sees shades of Eagles great in rookie Jihaad Campbell

If this one turns out to be accurate, the Eagles certainly have something on their hands. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why fans, NFL stars, and the media advise against comparing young and relatively unknown Philadelphia Eagles to legends. Think about the type of pressure it creates. It's hard enough to play football being an original. Playing in someone's shadow is something else entirely. Imagine what might have happened if Cam Jurgens had been dubbed Jason Kelce's second coming. Heck… Three years ago, Sal Paolantonio stated that Jalen Hurts and Tom Brady shared similar mindsets. People nearly went off the deep end. Here's the catch. Comparing guys who haven't accomplished anything to established veterans can sometimes motivate if the youngster has an alpha personality. Count Jihaad Campbell in that number. Respected draft pundit compares Jihaad Campbell to Jeremiah Trotter One of the exciting subplots of the coming Eagles season is the continued development of Jeremiah Trotter Jr., you may have heard. He's the son of a franchise legend. Here's what's funny, though. FOX Sports NFL Draft analyst Rob Kang recently dropped his take on one rookie on each NFL team that conjures up memories of a franchise star. He compared Philadelphia's first-round draft choice, Jihaad Campbell, to Jeremiah Trotter Sr. He lists the following as his reasoning for doing so. "Until free agent addition Zack Baun earned All-Pro honors and Super Bowl glory in his first season in Philadelphia (earning a contract extension), no Eagles' off-ball linebacker had been named a Pro Bowler until Trotter, whose son is now on the roster. Campbell needs time to develop, but his speed in coverage and experience as a pass rusher could make him quite the weapon." The Axe Man played 11 NFL seasons. Eight of those were spent in Philadelphia with the Eagles. During that run, he racked up 696 tackles, 11 sacks, seven interceptions, and seven forced fumbles during 116 regular-season games with 95 starts. He stacked another 76 tackles, a sack and a half, an interception, and a forced fumble in 11 playoff games. If the skill we saw from Campbell translates to the professional level, and there is some Trotter in there, this should be fun. Fingers are crossed that the rookie gets healthy as quickly as possible.

Buccaneers GM Reveals Comparison Between Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Over the last couple of the years, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found their new franchise quarterback. Baker Mayfield has taken over since signing with the Buccaneers and has not looked back. In each of the last two years, he has led Tampa Bay to the playoffs. He has done so while putting up major individual production, finally living up to the billing of being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. With Mayfield leading the way, the Buccaneers will be a team to watch once again in the 2025 NFL season. At this point, the NFC South is still wide open and Tampa Bay seems to be the team to beat once again. While no one would compare the two players from a success perspective, general manager Jason Licht did speak out with a comparison between the two quarterbacks. Read more: Vikings' JJ McCarthy Just Got a Head-Turning 2025 Prediction During a conversation with Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Licht revealed how Mayfield's decision to sign with the team was similar to Brady's. "Some of the same ways that Tom [Brady] chose us, Baker chose us too, because he knew that Tom chose us because it was the best place for him to win a Super Bowl, Baker chose us because it's the best place for him to revive his career," Licht said. "There wasn't agendas, and he was going to be able to just play football and try to win. So that was big for him, and he's obviously helped, big part in winning, but those players love playing with him, especially receivers. Who knows if Mike [Evans] would have chose to come here, who knows if Chris [Godwin] would have signed back, they love that guy. It's because they want somebody that's going to help them on the field too. So I hope Baker's here a long time." Last season, Mayfield played in all 17 games for the Buccaneers. He completed 71.4 percent of his pass attempts for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Mayfield also ran for 378 yards and three more scores. Back in 2023 in his first season in Tampa Bay, he threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes. Needless to say, the marriage between Mayfield and the Buccaneers has gone well. Mayfield leading the Buccaneers to a championship would equal the championship Brady brought to town. Only time will tell, but the team has a new star quarterback leading the way and Mayfield deserves a lot of recognition and praise for what he's done through two years with Tampa Bay.
