Catawba Indians reveal when $1 billion North Carolina casino is expected to open

Amid the earsplitting din of construction, the Catawba Indians on Tuesday revealed when they'll open their $1 billion Two Kings Casino Resort 35 miles west of Charlotte.
While the main casino complex is expected to open in spring 2027, a single-story 'introductory' casino is on target for a March 2026 opening, tribal officials said during a media tour of the 2.2 million-square-foot project off Interstate 85 exit 5.
'Not only is this facility bringing great jobs to our tribe and our people and creating that generational wealth, it's also bringing that same opportunity to the citizens of Kings Mountain and the citizens of North Carolina,' Catawba Nation Chief Brian Harris said.
The casino complex is the largest current construction project of any kind between New York and Florida, Nory Hazaveh, principal of SOSHNY, the N.Y.-based architect on Two Kings Casino Resort, told The Charlotte Observer at the site.
The introductory casino part of the complex will include 1,300 slot machines, 22 table games, a 40-seat restaurant, an 18-seat bar, sports betting kiosks and a loyalty rewards desk, officials said.
Inside the introductory casino Tuesday, construction officials pointed to steel piping where the ceiling will be, adorned by chandeliers.
The lobby will feature a video mural of the history of the Catawba Nation, along with its pottery and basket making traditions, Trent Troxel, vice president of the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority, said on the tour.
The tribe will close its current single-level casino, which celebrates its fourth anniversary July 1, three months after the introductory casino opens.
Construction of the main casino complex started about a year ago. That includes the introductory casino, three levels of covered parking, a back-of-house level and a top level with the main casino floor and restaurants.
Via an indoor 'skywalk,' the casino complex will attach to a 24-story, 385-room hotel that's also well underway.
The casino complex will have 4,300 slot machines, 100 table games and 11 restaurants, including a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, a marketplace with six venues, a café and a grab-and-go outlet. Restaurant names will be unveiled closer to the opening, officials said.
The complex also will include a players lounge, 42 elevators and 11 bars, including a center bar and a sports bar.
A 2,700-space parking garage will be built under the main casino floor on a high-rise casino building, and 800 surface parking spaces also will be available.
The project already is employing hundreds of construction workers. Upon completion, the casino resort will employ about 2,200 local residents and citizens of the Catawba Nation, tribal officials said.
With its current single-level, temporary casino, the operation already is providing education opportunities and health care to tribal employees, Troxel told the Observer.
'Most importantly, it's providing jobs,' Troxel said. 'Recently, we hired four or five tribal members. Some of them just came out of college. I didn't have that opportunity to go work for my tribe out of college. But there's opportunities for Catawba college kids now to come work for their nation.'

Owners of the Bahama Breeze restaurant chain signaled this week that the brand is no longer a priority, and they are considering selling the Caribbean-inspired chain a little over a month after shuttering over a dozen locations. Darden Restaurants CEO Ricardo Cardenas said in an earnings call on Friday, June 20 that they "will be considering strategic alternatives" for Bahama Breeze, such as selling the brand to a new owner or "converting restaurants to other Darden brands." "After further review, we have made the difficult decision that these remaining locations and the Bahama Breeze brand are not a strategic priority for us," Cardenas said in the call. The company abruptly closed down 15 restaurant locations in mid-May, leaving what they call their 28 "highest performing" restaurants currently in operation. The company has not issued a projected timeline of either a sale or restaurant conversions and has not disclosed if there is an interested buyer. Cardenas said the company does not expect a potential sale to have a "material impact" on their financial results. The restaurants first opened in the 90's in Florida, where half of their remaining locations remain. Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia all have two locations, according to the chain's website, while the states of Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, South Carolina and Washington have one location. From scandal to strategy: Kyle Moyer's new role at Arrow McLaren Racing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kyle Moyer, one of the three Team Penske executives fired during an Indianapolis 500 scandal, has been hired by Arrow McLaren Racing and will be with the IndyCar team this coming week for a test session at Iowa Speedway. Moyer was hand-selected to join McLaren by team principal Tony Kanaan. The two won the 2004 IndyCar championship together at Andretti Global. Moyer was Kanaan's team manager at the time. At McLaren, Moyer will be the director of competition and assist Scott Harner, who is the director of race operations. He will also replace Kanaan as strategist for Nolan Siegel, freeing Kanaan to work on race day with all three McLaren drivers. Moyer's official start date is June 30. Kanaan said almost the entire industry tried to hire Moyer after his May firing at Penske, but the previous relationship between Moyer and Kanaan gave McLaren the edge. 'Kyle is one of the best strategists in the paddock, so talking about his qualities, not just about him as a human being, he knows a lot about racing,' Kanaan told The Associated Press. 'Kyle probably is one of the top guys of knowledge of IndyCar — he's been around it his entire life. 'And Kyle is a people person, he's that kind of guy that captivates people and people want to work for Kyle,' Kanaan continued. 'At the same time, he is very direct and he will call you out and he makes it so every person I've ever seen working for Kyle wanted to work for Kyle. That's something that I experienced in my career and that is probably the biggest thing. The respect that I have for the guy is unbelievable.' Moyer's popularity was evident when Penske driver Scott McLaughlin lashed out after the trio of firings ahead of the Indy 500 . Moyer was let go along with team president Tim Cindric, a 25-year Penske employee, and managing director Ron Ruzewski. Moyer was Penske's general manager of the IndyCar program and the strategist for McLaughlin's car. The firings followed the discovery that the cars of Josef Newgarden and Will Power had illegally modified rear attenuators; Cindric said seams on the safety part had been sealed for aesthetic purposes, but the rulebook clearly stated no alterations could be made to the part. It was the second major technical violation for Penske cars in just over a year and team owner Roger Penske was left with no choice but to fire his top three executives. Penske owns the three-car race team, the IndyCar Series, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. 'Ultimately, those three guys are friends of mine and have done a tremendous amount in my career to get me to this point,' McLaughlin said in May after the firings. 'I guess you could say there's a sadness from my perspective. At the end of the day I drive for Roger Penske. I respect the decision. I understand the decision. We move forward.' Kanaan said he was shocked that Moyer did not have a non-compete clause and was available to McLaren immediately. He believes Moyer will be a help to Siegel, the 20-year-old in his first full season of IndyCar. Siegel heads into Sunday's race at Road America in Wisconsin ranked 21st in the standings. Mass Pike closure underway, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction near Boston

Traffic delays are expected just west of Boston this weekend as part of the Mass Pike is now reduced to one lane in each direction until Monday morning. The closures are on the Newton-Weston line so construction work can be done on a bridge replacement and rehab project at the intersection of the Mass Pike and I-95. Crews are now finishing the demolition of a highway bridge that goes over the MBTA. It's part of a $400 million project to repair eight bridges in the state. MassDOT is asking drivers to avoid that part of the Pike all weekend, if possible. Highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver said this weekend was chosen because it's the lightest traffic weekend of the summer. "This is the lightest traffic weekend of the summer. When we choose these weekends, we really look at what events are going on in the city. We look at historical travel data and this is this is one of the lightest travel weekends of the entire summer, which is why we chose this," said Gulliver. Lanes will be closed starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20 until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 23. The closure also impacts the MBTA. The Commuter Rail is shut down between Framingham and Boston through Sunday, June 22. Shuttle buses will be available for riders. Amtrak train service between Boston and Albany will also be closed this weekend.
