Galle : Sri Lanka batted out 32 overs in the final session of Day 5 to ensure the first Test in Galle ended in a draw, against Bangladesh, but it wasn't a result without minor jeopardy, as Sri Lanka lost four wickets on the way before Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis shut up shop for good.
The teams shook hands with five overs left to play in the day, with Dhananjaya de Silva and having played out 53 balls in their partnership.
During a run-chase of 296 runs, Dhananjaya and Kamindu had come together after Sri Lanka had lost both Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal in quick succession, both to the excellent Taijul Islam, who ended on figures of 3 for 23.
But despite Taijul and Nayeem Hasan's best efforts, it was clear the remaining six wickets would not fall before the 37 overs were up.
Bangladesh played out 11 overs in the post-lunch session, added 48 runs and asked Sri Lanka to chase down a target of 296 off 37 overs - at a required rate of eight an over - if they wanted to steal an unlikely win.
Those 37 overs might have been more, but the primary goal of Bangladesh continuing to bat after the rain break seemed to be for Najmul Hossain Shanto to get to his second century of the game - it was the third instance of a Bangladeshi batter scoring two centuries in the same Test, and the second time Shanto had accomplished the feat, the 15th batter ever to do the unique double.
It took 50 deliveries after the restart for Shanto to get to the milestone, during which Bangladesh had scored just 19 runs and lost the wickets of Litton Das and Jaker Ali - both succumbed to the growing turn on offer, and frustration with defensive lines down leg.
In the next 17 balls, though, Bangladesh ransacked 29 - including a trio of sixes from Shanto down the ground off the spinners.
Earlier in the match, Bangladesh finished their first innings on 495, Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim both scoring a ton. Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for SL, grabbing four wickets.
Sri Lanka finished their first innings on 485, trailing behind 10 runs in the first innings. SL batter Pathum Nissanka played of the best innings of his life as he made 187 runs in 256 balls, Bangladesh spinner Nayeem Hasan took a fifer to bowl out SL.
Shanto was awarded man of the match for his centuries in both innings.
Brief score: Sri Lanka 485 and 72/4 ( Pathum Nissanka 24, Dhananjaya de Silva 12; Taijul Islam 3/23). Vs Bangladesh 495 & 285/6d ( Najmul Hossain Shanto 125*, Shadman Islam 76; Tharindu Rathnayake 3/102).

"Tried not to let it affect me too much": Ollie Pope on his century against India

Leeds : England batter Ollie Pope reflected on his century in the first match of the five-test series against India on Monday at Leeds. Pope said he has tried not to be affected much by it and wants to make the most of every opportunity. Pope hammered Indian bowlers to bring up a ninth century in Test cricket. The number three batter came on early at the crease (4/1) before sharing a century-plus stand alongside Ben Duckett. Pope, who was handed a life by Yashasvi Jaiswal with a dropped catch, completed his century off 125 balls. While speaking in the post-match press conference, Ollie Pope said, "I've tried not to let it affect me too much," I've just been trying to make sure my game's in as good a place as possible, and when I get in, I try to make sure I make the most of it. I've tried to let the outside noise do its thing and make sure my game keeps improving, and that I get my headspace in as good a place as possible, too." "It's a long series, and there's a lot to be done in this game still as well. It's definitely [an innings] that I really enjoyed. It was disappointing not to kick on this morning, but I'm really happy with how I went about it and played, and I'm happy with where my game's at - so hopefully, I can kick on," Pope added. The first Test is in the balance after three days, with India's top order building on a slender first-innings lead on Sunday evening. Pope said that England's lower-order contributions were "really important", with cameos from Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse helping them reduce the deficit to only six runs. "[A deficit of] 40 or 50, just from a mindset, might have given them a little bit more confidence, knowing that they've got that head-start, but playing the game from an even playing field felt quite important. We got those two wickets; they played nicely. KL Rahul batted really well. It's important for us to get some early breakthroughs," he added. "It obviously would've been nice to get maybe one or two more wickets this evening, but I think the pitch is still playing really well. It's obviously such a quick-scoring ground, with the lightning [fast] outfield. It's obviously an important session tomorrow morning, and the game is poised in a pretty nice position," Pope said. A very entertaining day of Test cricket, mostly dominated by England, ended with India taking a 96-run lead following the final session of the first Test at Leeds on Sunday. At the end of the day's play, which was cut short due to rain, India ended at 90/2, with KL Rahul (47*) and skipper Shubman Gill (6*) unbeaten.

Leeds: Yashasvi Jaiswal's commanding century along with Indian skipper Shubman Gill's fifty plus score powered India to 215/2 at the end of the second session on Day 1 of the first test against England, at Headingley, Leeds. A wicketless session for India, as the duo of Gill and Jaiswal added 123 runs off 154 balls in the second session. India started their second session on 92/2, Indian skipper Shubman Gill joined Jaiswal in the middle. India crossed the 100-run mark in the 29th over after Gill smashed a four towards cover-point, off Brydon Carse. Jaiswal completed his maiden fifty in England after pushing the ball towards midwicket for a single, off Josh Tongue. The duo of Gill and Jaiswal added 50 runs for the third wicket in the 36th over. Gill slammed his first half-century as captain. He breaks his fifty-less SENA streak, slamming his first fifty in SENA since his 91 at Gabba in January 2021, after a streak of eight Tests and 15 innings without a fifty later after it. Jaiswal brought up this maiden century in England off just 144 balls, after taking a single off Brydon Carse in the 49th over.
