1st Test: Yashasvi Jaiswals majestic ton powers India to 215/2 at Tea against England
Leeds: Yashasvi Jaiswal's commanding century along with Indian skipper Shubman Gill's fifty plus score powered India to 215/2 at the end of the second session on Day 1 of the first test against England, at Headingley, Leeds.
A wicketless session for India, as the duo of Gill and Jaiswal added 123 runs off 154 balls in the second session.
India started their second session on 92/2, Indian skipper Shubman Gill joined Jaiswal in the middle. India crossed the 100-run mark in the 29th over after Gill smashed a four towards cover-point, off Brydon Carse.
Jaiswal completed his maiden fifty in England after pushing the ball towards midwicket for a single, off Josh Tongue. The duo of Gill and Jaiswal added 50 runs for the third wicket in the 36th over.
Gill, in his first match as Indian skipper, took charge on the England bowlers as he smashed 40 runs off just 44 balls. At drinks, India were 159/2 Yashasvi Jaiswal 67(112) and Shubman Gill 40 (44).
Gill slammed his first half-century as captain. He breaks his fifty-less SENA streak, slamming his first fifty in SENA since his 91 at Gabba in January 2021, after a streak of eight Tests and 15 innings without a fifty later after it.
Gill becomes the ninth Indian to hit a 50+ score in a maiden innings as Test captain & at 25y & 285d he is the youngest of the nine to do so. 56 balls to reach 50 makes it his fastest Test fifty by balls faced.
The duo of Gill and Jaiswal added 100 runs for the third wicket in the 46th over, off just 122 balls. India crossed the 200-run mark in the 49th over.
Jaiswal brought up this maiden century in England off just 144 balls, after taking a single off Brydon Carse in the 49th over.

But with centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill and one potentially coming from vice-captain Rishabh Pant, India may have silenced these voices, at least for the duration of this match. -An ominous opening act from Jaiswal-KL Rahul After England opted to bowl first following the coin toss in their favour, the pair of experienced Chris Woakes and skipper Ben Stokes was expected to create some trouble for Indian openers along with his young, energetic partners in crime, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue on a 9mm grassy surface which could provide some scary movement. He followed the footsteps of legendary names like Vijay Hazare (1951), Sunil Gavaskar (1976), and Virat Kohli (2014), becoming the fourth Indian to reach triple figures in the first innings as Test captain. Interestingly, he also touched the 2,000 run Test mark during his debut as Test captain, just like Virat had done at Adelaide 11 years back in Australia. India was under similar circumstances back in 2014, with plenty of legends having retired after series losses in England and Australia during the last three years, and the time demanded that a new leader step in following a long string of poor showings under MS Dhoni as captain. Kohli did just that, peeling off four tons against Australia away from home on a tour that saw him make 692 runs. At the end of the day's play, Gill's Test stats read: 2,020 runs in 33 Tests, 60 innings, average of 37.40 with six centuries and seven fifties. Rohit, Virat, Ashwin retirements mark start of transition for Indian Test team, says Sachin Tendulkar
Leeds: As India prepares to face England in the high-stakes Test series starting June 20, the shock retirement announcements of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin have sparked widespread debate. While fans mourn the end of an era, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar offered a grounded perspective, emphasising the natural progression of generational shifts in Indian cricket. Tendulkar, speaking on the development, acknowledged the emotional void left by the trio but maintained that the process of transition is nothing new to Indian cricket. "We are going through a transitional phase in the Indian team. There are young faces, and some of the senior players are still around to guide them and this churning process will continue for years to come. It has been going on for decades," he said. Drawing from personal experience, the Master Blaster recalled how similar changes have occurred in the past, when his own generation passed the baton. "At some stage, the players have to retire, and at some stage, the new faces replace them, and they start their journey. Even when we were playing, be it Sehwag (Virender), Ganguly (Sourav), Dravid (Rahul), Laxman (VVS), myself, Anil Kumble, Yuvraj (Singh), or Dhoni (MS), at some stage, we all retired and the next generation took over," Tendulkar added. "So, it will continue, this process and I have no doubt that the new generation is talented," he noted. Tendulkar also expressed confidence in the talent pool available in India, calling for patience and faith in the newcomers. "As far as skill is concerned, in our country there are so many skilful players. I hope they make the most of the opportunity given to them," he added. "So, that process, what you said about Virat and Rohit and I'll add another name to that, Ashwin has also retired. These three retirements, I mean, that will go on.
