Top Maoist leader cremated in Narayanpur; Chhattisgarh cops claim there were no claimants

Hindustan Times26-05-2025

RAIPUR: Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju, the general secretary of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) who was killed in a gunfight with security forces on May 21, was cremated in Narayanpur district under official supervision, the Chhattisgarh police said in a statement on Monday evening.
The state police said no legal claimants had come forward to claim his body.
'Following the operation, the authorities recovered the bodies of 27 Maoists. Of these, 20 were claimed by their family members and were handed over after due verification. However, no one came forward to claim the body of Basavaraju, who was carrying a reward of ₹1 crore announced by the Chhattisgarh government, with additional reward from other states and central agencies,' the statement said.
Basavaraju, the top leader of the CPI (Maoist) since 2018, was among the 27 Maoists killed in a gunfight with District Reserve Guard (DRG) in the dense Kudmel-Kalhaja-Jatloor forest area of Abujhmad on May 21.
'The cremation was carried out under the supervision of the executive magistrate after obtaining necessary legal orders. Notably, even the family of Kosi alias Hungi, one of the deceased cadres, requested local authorities to perform cremation in Narayanpur due to concerns over health hazards from decomposition,' the statement said.
Monday's move comes days after the Andhra Pradesh high court on Saturday told the family members of two slain Maoist leaders, Basvaraju and Sajja Venkata Nageswara Rao alias Rajanna, to approach the Chhattisgarh police to seek custody of their bodies. Basavaraju's mother Bharatamma and Nageshwara Rao's brother Sajja Srinivasa Rao had filed separate petitions to seek directions to the police to hand over their bodies for the final rites.
According to the police, Basavaraju, who was previously the head of the Central Military Commission of the banned group, was linked to over 250 criminal cases across various states.
'We have also recovered an AK-47 rifle which Basavaraju allegedly looted from security forces during the infamous 2010 Tadmetla ambush in Dantewada,' said the statement.
The CPI (Maoist) has confirmed the death of its top leader in what it has called the 'Gundekot Massacre'.
In a statement released by its Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), Vikalp, on Monday, it was alleged that the security forces were able to get to him due to intelligence leaks and betrayal by some. It also claimed Basavaraj was captured alive and executed and accused the government of violating a ceasefire previously proposed by Basavaraj.

CPI (Maoist) NR bureau terror revival case: NIA nabs one more accused from Delhi

NEW DELHI: The anti-terror federal probe agency NIA has arrested another key accused, identified as Vishal Singh, in connection with its probe into the CPI (Maoist) Northern Region Bureau (NRB) terror revival conspiracy, officials said on Sunday. Following the arrest, the agency conducted a search at his residence in West Delhi and seized devices including hard drives, pen drives, mobile phones, and other incriminating material, they said. Singh, originally from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, has been found to be a member of the CPI (Maoist), the officials said, alleging that he had delivered a drone to leaders of the banned outfit in the Chhakarbanda/Panchrukhiya forest area of Bihar to further its violent anti-national activities. 'He had imparted technical training to other cadres of the CPI (Maoist) and had also attended meetings with its central committee members in the deep forest areas of Bihar in 2019,' a senior NIA official said.

Memorial to be built in honour of Kharwar brothers: Jaiswal

Patna: State BJP president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal on Sunday said a memorial would be constructed in the state to commemorate contributions of two brothers from the Kharwar tribe, Nilambar and Pitambar, in the freedom struggle. Jaiswal announced this while addressing a convention of Kharwar tribe here. He also said a committee headed by members of Kharwar tribe would be set up to look into their problems, and follow up action would be taken to find solutions to them. Although the Kharwars are mostly found in the Bhagalpur and Munger divisions, their maximum concentration is in the Pirpainty assembly constituency of Bhagalpur district and Manihari in Kathar district. Both the constituencies, earlier, were general seats, but Pirpainty was later made a reserved seat for the scheduled caste people, and Manihari was designated as scheduled tribe (ST) seat. Incidentally, Kharwars were earlier put in the category of SC group, but after a long campaign and social mobilisation done by former CPI MLA of Pirpainty, Ambika Mandal, the Kharwar was notified as an ST group. NIA arrests one more accused in Maoists Northern Region Bureau terror revival conspiracy case

ANI 22 Jun 2025, 19:47 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested another key accused in a CPI (Maoist) Northern Region Bureau (NRB) terror revival conspiracy case from Delhi, the probe agency said on Sunday. NIA also seized devices including hard drives, pen drives and mobile phones, as well as other incriminating material during a search in the West Delhi house of the accused, identified as Vishal Singh, originally hailing from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. According to NIA, investigations have revealed that the accused, a member of the CPI (Maoist), had delivered a drone to leaders of the banned terror outfit in Chhakarbanda/Panchrukhiya forest area of Bihar to further its violent anti-national activities. He had imparted technical training to other cadres of CPI (Maoist) and had also attended meetings with its central committee members in the deep forest areas of Bihar in 2019. NIA in August 2024, had arrested another accused, Ajay Singhal alias Aman, in-charge of the State Organising Committee (SOC) Haryana and Punjab of CPI (Maoist). The case relates to the terror organisation's conspiracy to re-energise its decrepit influence in the Northern Regional Bureau (NRB) area, comprising UP, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The conspiracy involves recruitment of cadres and strengthening of the organisation in the region through underground cadres working in urban areas, along with some Over Ground Workers (OGWs) operating in the guise of activists, the probe agency said. Several front organisations and student wings have been used to prepare the ground for promoting the conspiracy, aimed at waging war against the Government of India. They were receiving funds from the outfit's Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB), particularly from Jharkhand. Further investigation is underway. (ANI)
