Cop injured by passenger on plane in ‘vicious assault' at Dublin Airport
Gardai were called by the captain and crew of a United Airlines flight travelling from Newark to Dublin who reported a disruptive passenger on-board and requested assistance of gardaí.
On arrival, gardaí attached to the Dublin Airport Garda Station boarded the aircraft 'and attempted to engage with the disruptive male passenger onboard'.
'The man, aged in his 40s proceeded to viciously assault a member of An Garda Síochána,' a spokesperson said.
'OC spray was deployed in an attempt to stop the sustained assault of a Garda.
'The man fled the aircraft and was arrested a short time later.'
The man has since been charged with assault and offences under the Air Navigation and Transport Act, 2022.
He remains in Garda custody and is due to appear before Dublin District Court at 4.30pm today.
Gardai added that the officer who was injured during the incident is being treated at Beaumont Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Elderly sex abuser (89) jailed for 10 years for multiple rapes of young girl
A 89-year-old Tipperary man who sexually abused a young girl has been jailed for ten years. Sid Green of Kennedy Park, Roscrea, was convicted of 22 counts of rape and one count of sexual assault of the child, on dates between 1993 and 1998. He has no previous convictions. Advertisement Detective Garda Oliver Hennelly told George Burns BL, prosecuting, that the woman reported to gardaí that the offending began when she just turned seven. Green was 57 years old. The women reported that Green took any opportunity he could to rape her and that it happened many times. The abuse ended when she was about the age of 12 years old. The woman subsequently engaged with mental health services and the rape crisis centre but did not feel ready to go to gardaí until after she disclosed the abuse to her own family. The woman made a complaint to gardaí in 2020 and when Green was interviewed in 2021, he denied the allegations. He was charged in 2022 and found guilty following a trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Tullamore earlier this year. Advertisement In her victim impact statement, the woman described the profound and devastating effects that the abuse continues to have on her life as a result of the emotional and psychological damage caused. She described how she battles with fear and trust and how her relationships with family, friends and loved ones have suffered. She outlined how anxiety has transferred into her own parenting. She suffers with depression, flashbacks and nightmares, feels isolated and misunderstood, leaving her with a profound sense of loneliness. She described how she found temporary escape in drugs and alcohol, but recognised this led to a destructive cycle, creating a barrier between her and loved ones. She told the court how she felt shame and guilt, despite being the innocent victim in the situation. Advertisement She said the long-term consequences of the abuse are still unfolding, but she is determined to seek healing and support. She thanked those who have supported her, especially her husband and said she is ready to 'confront the shadows of the past and step into a hopeful future together.' The injured party indicated to the court at a previous hearing that she has no issue with Green being named, but she does not wish to be identified. She told the court how the damaging effects of the abuse had been 'far-reaching and enduring' and had affected every facet of her existence. The court heard defence submissions that Green, who has recently been resident in a Co Offaly nursing home, has medical issues that would make custody difficult for him. He has been on bail and appeared via video link from the nursing home for his sentence hearings. The prison service have indicated that they will be able to take Green into custody on July 10 next and will be able to accommodate his medical needs. Passing sentence, Mr Justice Patrick McGrath said these were 'appalling offences' noting that Green coldly engaged in a cynical campaign of rape which he perpetrated whenever the opportunity arose. He noted that there has been no remorse shown. Mr Justice McGrath noted the profound impact the offending has had on the woman's life. He said she is a young woman who has shown remarkable resilience and strength, and he commended her for the manner in which she dealt with the case and gave her evidence. He noted the support the young woman had from her husband and parents throughout the process. Man (24) who dragged visually impaired child away from her mother to be sentenced
A man who dragged a visually impaired child away from her mother will be sentenced next month. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Stephan Obelngoa (24) of Deerpark Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, assault of a peace officer and resisting arrest at The Square, Tallaght. Garda Sergeant Gemma Collins told Shaun Smyth, BL, prosecuting, that an 11-year-old girl, her mother and little brother were leaving the shopping centre on the day in question when they noticed a man later identified as Obelngoa. He was topless, and the mother described his movements as 'unnerving' and said he seemed 'aggressive'. The court heard the mother intended to walk on and avoid Obelngoa, but she suddenly noticed that her daughter had disappeared from her peripheral vision. Advertisement The woman turned around and saw her visually impaired daughter being dragged away by Obelngoa. The little girl was screaming, crying and struggling to get away. The mother described her daughter as 'bouncing off the ground'. Obelngoa then threw the girl into a concession stand. Gda Sgt Collins said two security guards immediately subdued Obelngoa. When gardaí arrived, they found Obelngoa was shouting, roaring and aggressive as he was being restrained. He then spat a mixture of blood and saliva into the face of one of the gardaí. As gardaí were trying to place handcuffs on Obelngoa, he tried to bite them. Advertisement Specialist gardaí interviewed the young girl, and she described to them 'being dragged like a doll and being dragged on the floor'. She said, 'I thought he was going to drag me away forever and would kidnap me'. The girl was examined the following day by a doctor, and a medical report stated she suffered minor spinal soft tissue tenderness and abrasions. The court heard the young girl had trouble sleeping and was extremely anxious in public places like shopping centres afterwards. Gda Sgt Collins agreed with Ciara Ní Ghabhann, BL, defending, that gardaí were unable to interview her client after he was arrested, as he was made an involuntary patient in Tallaght Hospital, where he remained for a period of time. The garda agreed with counsel that CCTV footage obtained by the gardaí shows that the incident lasted a matter of seconds. The Probation Services have said he is at low risk of reoffending. She said Obelngoa has written letters of apology to both the garda and the young girl in this case, outlining his sincere remorse. He does not have a clear memory of the incident, but when shown the CCTV footage, he was embarrassed. She asked the court to take into account that her client was quite young and had an acute mental health issue when this offence was committed. She said her client has taken steps to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again. Judge Sinead Ni Chulachain said, 'these are very serious offences,' and adjourned this matter for two weeks to consider her sentences and read all documents handed into the court.
