A man who dragged a visually impaired child away from her mother will be sentenced next month.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Stephan Obelngoa (24) of Deerpark Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, assault of a peace officer and resisting arrest at The Square, Tallaght. Dublin, on October 2nd, 2023.

He has six previous convictions and was on bail at the time of this offence.
Garda Sergeant
Gemma Collins told Shaun Smyth, BL, prosecuting, that an 11-year-old girl, her mother and little brother were leaving the shopping centre on the day in question when they noticed a man later identified as Obelngoa.
He was topless, and the mother described his movements as 'unnerving' and said he seemed 'aggressive'.
The court heard the mother intended to walk on and avoid Obelngoa, but she suddenly noticed that her daughter had disappeared from her peripheral vision.

The woman turned around and saw her visually impaired daughter being dragged away by Obelngoa. The little girl was screaming, crying and struggling to get away.
The mother described her daughter as 'bouncing off the ground'. Obelngoa then threw the girl into a concession stand.
Gda Sgt Collins said two security guards immediately subdued Obelngoa. When gardaí arrived, they found Obelngoa was shouting, roaring and aggressive as he was being restrained.
He then spat a mixture of blood and saliva into the face of one of the gardaí. As gardaí were trying to place handcuffs on Obelngoa, he tried to bite them.

Specialist gardaí interviewed the young girl, and she described to them 'being dragged like a doll and being dragged on the floor'. She said, 'I thought he was going to drag me away forever and would kidnap me'.
The girl was examined the following day by a doctor, and a medical report stated she suffered minor spinal soft tissue tenderness and abrasions. The court heard the young girl had trouble sleeping and was extremely anxious in public places like shopping centres afterwards.
Gda Sgt Collins agreed with Ciara Ní Ghabhann, BL, defending, that gardaí were unable to interview her client after he was arrested, as he was made an involuntary patient in Tallaght Hospital, where he remained for a period of time.
The garda agreed with counsel that CCTV footage obtained by the gardaí shows that the incident lasted a matter of seconds.

Ms Ní Ghabhann said her client suffers from schizophrenia and is given antipsychotic medication every three months. She said at the time of this incident, Obelngoa had been off his medications for six months and was self-medicating with cannabis.

Counsel said her client is currently under the supervision of the Probation Services and has undertaken community response programmes. The Probation Services have said he is at low risk of reoffending.
She said Obelngoa has written letters of apology to both the garda and the young girl in this case, outlining his sincere remorse. He does not have a clear memory of the incident, but when shown the CCTV footage, he was embarrassed.
She asked the court to take into account that her client was quite young and had an acute mental health issue when this offence was committed. She said her client has taken steps to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again.
Judge Sinead Ni Chulachain said, 'these are very serious offences,' and adjourned this matter for two weeks to consider her sentences and read all documents handed into the court.

A MURDERER was caught after cops followed a trail of blood from the victim after he was stabbed in a TV remote row. James Murray, 47, died in Wythenshawe, Manchester, after being fatally knifed by his flatmate Scott Thomson, 57. 2 2 The pair of pals had moved in together after initially meeting at a hostel. But as the months went by the "co-dependent" relationship soured as Thomson became increasingly suspicious of his flatmate. Tensions surrounding a new TV bought for the flat began to flare, with Thomson claiming that Murray was hogging the remote. On December 4 last year, an argument over the TV remote escalated, with tragic consequences. Thomson grabbed a 19cm blade and lashed out at his flatmate with the large knife causing fatal damage. The weapon caused an 8cm wound, penetrating through Murray's ribcage and going "straight into his heart". He manage to stagger outside bleeding but Murray then collapsed and died in the street despite the efforts of paramedics to save him. A trail of blood led officers to Thomson's flat, where further evidence of the violent altercation was discovered. Thomson fled the scene but was arrested the next day after approaching cops and admitting his involvement. Thomson was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years for killing Murray in a hearing at Manchester Crown Court yesterday. In a powerful victim impact statement read out in court, James' son said: 'I would like to pass on thanks to my family liaison officer for all the help and support they have provided to me and my family throughout this process. "There is no way to fully express the depth of pain and loss that my father's murder has caused. 'My dad, James, was funny, laid back, and incredibly personable. He had a gift for making people laugh, often by winding us up in a way that only he could. "That was his way—he brought joy and light into every room he entered. He may not have been an angel, he may not have lived the best life, but he was my dad. 'Since the day he was taken from us, my life has changed completely. I am constantly reminded of what has happened. I consistently feel the pain of his murder, there is not a day that goes by that I don't feel the weight of his absence. "I struggle to sleep. I struggle to have a 'normal' day. Even the simplest things have become difficult without him here. 'What hurts the most is knowing that due to Scott Thompson taking my dad's life, I no longer have the opportunity to create new memories with my dad or share my life with him. No milestones, no quiet chats, no laughter, no future together. "The loss of his life is greater than just the loss of a person—it's the loss of time, connection, and a relationship that can never be replaced. 'No sentence can bring him back, but I hope justice can reflect the seriousness of the pain inflicted on our family, and the irreplaceable life that was taken from us. 'The way in which James was taken from the world is a constant memory, a constant image for which I will never be able to unsee and this being solely due to Scott Thomson's actions on December 4 2024. 'I want Scott Thomson to know his actions will never be forgotten or forgiven.' If he is ever released from prison Thomson will be subject to licence for the rest of his life. Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe said: 'Firstly, our thoughts remain with James' family and friends at this time. 'This was a tragic and totally avoidable incident that highlights the devastating impact knife crime can have. There is no doubt that this issue could have been resolved without weapons. Chloe Othen, 34, had been invited over to Ricky Lawrence's home in Knightsbridge, London, when "all hell broke loose", a court heard. 8 8 8 8 The Miss Universe finalist claimed she was pinned down by Lawrence and accused him of punching and biting her on her legs, arm and shoulder, jurors heard. Chloe, an Instagram influencer with 284,000 followers, said she "feared she would die" at the 33-year-old's £1.5million apartment. But Lawrence, who runs Lawrence & Winslade bespoke tailors in Knightsbridge, denied the charges and was cleared of assault causing actual bodily harm after an eight-day retrial. Whisky merchant Lawrence was accused of punching Chloe multiple times but was found not guilty having insisted a love rival beat her up. He claimed her current partner Hatton Garden jeweller Bora Guccuk, 41, was responsible for Chloe's injuries. Now, Chloe has taken to Instagram with her latest post referencing the ordeal. Jurors previously heard a slew of messages were recovered from Lawrence's phone that were sent just before the accusations of assault. He told her: 'I'll do everything in my power to f**k you up. "You're a lying little w****, you said you were coming to me an hour-and-a-half ago." Chloe also described Lawrence as "crazy" and claimed he pursued her while she was at the Cannes film festival and in Mykonos with friends. CHARGES CLEARED Smartly dressed in a grey suit, bearded Lawrence appeared emotional as the unanimous verdict was announced as he looked over to supporters at the back of the courtroom. Giving evidence in court, Lawrence claimed Chloe had confided in him that her boyfriend Guccuk was violent towards her - and that at one point he had seen her with a red mark on her face. Lawrence claimed: "She had a mark on the side of her face. It looked like a footprint. It was a round mark. It was a red round mark. "She always described the relationship as violent. She said he used to beat her up, things of that nature." Asked by Tom Wyatt, defending, whether he had ever bitten anyone, Lawrence replied: "Absolutely not. I'd never even had a fight". The defence lawyer said no one was suggesting Chloe was not assaulted but claimed Guccuk was responsible for her injuries. Mr Wyatt added: "She couldn't risk losing the man who paid for her lifestyle." Francesca Allen, 28, who appeared on series five of Love Island, dated Lawrence in 2018 and wrote a character statement as part of Lawrence's defence. Following his initial arrest, Lawrence had wept and said: "This is ridiculous. She's ruining my life. I asked her to leave." Lawrence later gave police a prepared statement in which he confirmed his relationship with Ms Othen began in January 2022 and ended four months later "because she aborted my child". 8 8 8
