Health Alert issued for Albuquerque due to strong winds, blowing dust
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque-Bernalillo County air quality program issued a health alert on Tuesday due to blowing dust. The health alert is effective from Tuesday, March 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Bernalillo County residents with respiratory conditions are encouraged to limit outdoor activity.

Contractors and businesses that generate dust have also been issued to shut down immediately.
Also, due to high winds, Albuquerque's Solid Waste Management Department is asking residents to help keep the community clean. Solid Waste will not pick up bins that have been knocked over by the wind. Drivers will not be able to complete their routes if the bins are not upright. They ask if you see your bin knocked over, to place it upright. They also ask if you see your neighbor's bin knocked over place it upright as well.
People are also encouraged to report any downed limbs on roadways and public places by calling 311 or online.
Limit your time spent outdoors and avoid outdoor exercise.
Schools and senior citizen facilities may want to provide indoor activities to minimize exposure to elevated outdoor particulate levels.
Keep windows and doors closed. If needed for comfort, use air conditioners or heating systems on recycle/recirculation mode.
If symptoms of heart or lung disease occur, (including shortness of breath, chest tightness, chest pain, palpitations or unusual fatigue) contact your healthcare provider.
Individuals with heart or lung disease should follow their health management plan from their health care provider.
Asthmatic individuals should follow a prescribed asthma management plan.

New Mexico Gov. declares emergency in response to Trout Fire
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued an emergency declaration on Tuesday in response to the Trout Fire near Silver City, which has burnt over 24,000 acres and led to evacuations across the area. Alongside the emergency declaration, Gov. Lujan Grisham has also secured Fire Management Assistance Grants to further assist with firefighting efforts in Grant County. Soldiers and Airmen of the New Mexico National Guard have been activated as well, with personnel from Rio Rancho, Albuquerque, Kirtland Air Force Base and Las Cruces helping with evacuations ordered last Friday. The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management is being allocated $750,000 by the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration to request assets such as additional firefighting crews, fire engines, air support, sheltering assistance, and out-of-state other personnel. This is through Executive Order 2025-235. 'New Mexicans are all too familiar with the devastation that comes from wildfires that bring danger and destruction to everything in their paths,' said Gov. Lujan Grisham. 'I appreciate our federal partners for taking this threat seriously and for doing their part in supporting the responders who are working their hardest to protect the community.' New Mexico Lt. Governor Howie Morales said 35 New Mexico National Guardsmen and women will be on scene by the end of the day. He said there are no indications that structures are being threatened at this point, but power is being shut off to protect firefighters. 'When I drove through there yesterday, the smoke was pretty heavy. The air quality was causing a lot of respiratory issues. How are crews using aerial support to fight New Mexico wildfires?
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – They're one of the largest firefighting tanker planes in the world and have played a big part in supporting firefighters as they work to contain fires across the state. 'Our primary mission is supplying fire retardant in support of the fire operations on the ground,' said Chris Niccoli, Chief Operating Officer for 10 Tanker Air Carrier. ABQ Taco Fest and more Forecast: Wildfire danger returns to parts of New Mexico Friday and Saturday As thousands of acres burn in the Gila National Forest, crews are working around the clock to suppress the flames, and a key part of that effort is air support from 10 Tanker Air Carrier, and its fleet of retrofitted DC-10 airplanes. 'We've been running missions every day, in support of Trout, Buck,' said Niccoli. 'Also, Seven Springs, down to that way, and so there hasn't been a day since it started that we haven't been supporting the operations there, and firefighters there.' The planes have been supporting crews for about a week now. Their goal? Drop thousands of tons of flame retardant to put out the flames. According to Niccoli, a plane can get fueled up and take off from Albuquerque in as little as thirty minutes. The air carrier has four planes assisting with the various fires across New Mexico. 'Our pilots come on, usually around 9 o'clock, and then usually wait for an order that might come on,' Niccoli said. The airplane company said pilots and mechanics work 12 days on, 12 days off. The team also works closely with ground crews to determine if aerial support is needed and how much retardant needs to be dropped. They added that the type of fuel burning in the fire determines how big an area the plane can dump chemicals on. Fuel, such as big trees, typically take more coverage compared to smaller shrubs or plants. 'We can, in our light coverages, we can take retardant as up to as far as a mile with this particular aircraft, just because we have a lot of volume,' Niccoli added. Health officials issue warnings as UK bakes in the first heat wave of 2025
LONDON — British health officials are warning people across the country to take precautions when out in the sun as the U.K. bakes under its first heat wave of the year. Temperatures are expected to peak at 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) in some parts of eastern England on Saturday following a week of unusually warm weather, according to the national weather agency the Met Office. That's about 12 C (22 F) higher than normal for this time of year. The U.K. Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat health alert covering all of England because of increased health risks for people over 65 and those with heart and lung problems. 'Heat can result in serious health outcomes across the population, especially for older adults or those with pre-existing health conditions,' Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of the UKHSA, said in a statement. 'It is therefore important to check on friends, family and neighbors who are more vulnerable and to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.' Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of the heat wave, with temperatures falling slightly on Sunday and dropping back into the more normal temperatures next week, the Met Office said. The heat alert is currently scheduled to remain in effect until Monday morning. Unusually, temperatures in London this week have been higher than in many parts of Western Europe. That's because the high temperatures are not the result of hot air moving north from the Iberian Peninsula or North Africa as is often the case, the Met Office said. Instead, this weather system originated in air high over the Atlantic Ocean south of Greenland. As it approaches the U.K., it descends toward ground level, causing it to warm rapidly, Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lenhert said. That said, it has been plenty hot in Europe too. Aviation enthusiasts attending the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, north of Paris, this week sought the shade of a Boeing 777's wing, cooling off as temperatures hovered in the low 30s C (mid-80s F.) Met Office scientists this week published research showing that climate change is increasing the likelihood of extreme high temperatures in the U.K. The chance of temperatures exceeding 40 Celsius (104 F) is now more than 20 times higher than it was in the 1960s, the researchers said.
