Taxi marshals return to make city nights out safer

Taxi marshals have returned to York to ensure two city centre cab ranks are safe for people to use on Friday and Saturday nights.
The scheme, operated by York Business Improvement District (BID), has operated from spring to December for the past eight years, with two marshals on patrol at each location from 23:00 to 03:00 BST.
Since its inception, it has helped to reduce noise complaints, street fights and public urination, according to the BID.
Operations manager Carl Alsop said it ensured "local residents can sleep and local businesses aren't worried".
"Ultimately, there might be a lot of drunk people there, but there also might be people who've just finished work of have gone to see a friend and just want to get home.
"The last thing they want is to be worried about a big group of people who've had a drink and might start something," he said.
The scheme is funded by local businesses, residents and the licensing team at City of York Council, with the BID contributing "very little money", Mr Alsop said.
It contributes to the city's Purple Flag status, according to councillor Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport.
The status, awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), is an internationally-recognised scheme similar to Blue Flag awards to coastal towns for high beach standards.
Purple Flags are given in recognition of efforts made to create safe and thriving places for people visiting pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants at night.
Ravilious said the scheme had been "warmly received" by residents and businesses since it started in 2017.
It "supports the aim of reducing violence against women and girls" and "provides additional securities to the taxi trade", she said.

Boy and three men arrested after knife incident

Four people have been arrested following a violent incident in Knottingley. Police were called to Yew Tree Walk at about 18:50 BST on Friday, following reports of a dispute involving several males, one of whom was reported to have a bladed weapon. Officers said no injuries had been reported but a 24-year old man was arrested on suspicion of affray at the scene, with a 30-year old man arrested later, on suspicion of affray and possession with intent to supply drugs. West Yorkshire Police said a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were also later arrested on suspicion of affray. All four males remain in custody. University student jailed for raping child

A university student has been jailed for 14 years after admitting repeatedly raping a child. David Thorne, 22, pleaded guilty to eight sexual offences, including five rape charges involving a child aged under 13. Lincoln Crown Court heard that Thorne, who is studying policing, travelled to Grantham in Lincolnshire to meet the girl. Thorne had claimed the girl told him she was 17, but his evidence was dismissed by the court at a Newton Hearing – which seeks to determine the truth when two sides give conflicting evidence. Giving evidence, the girl insisted she told Thorne her real age and said it was Thorne who claimed to be 17. All the offences took place over three days in December 2023. The court was told Thorne, an Army cadet leader, wore his uniform during one of his visits to see the girl. Passing sentence, Judge Simon Hirst said he had "no hesitation" in accepting the victim's account of events. In a victim impact statement read out in court, the girl said: "The crime made me angry and upset. "I feel very sad, especially when I'm on my own." Thorne, of New Crescent in Cherry Willingham, was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will have to serve an extended period of 12 months on licence when he is released from custody. A restraining order will also prevent Thorne having further contact with his victim. Det Con Victoria Oakes praised the girl for her bravery and courage. "Thorne's actions are reprehensible and completely unacceptable in our society. His victim was clearly underage, and he knew that," she said. "Instead, he chose to plead ignorance and I am glad that the judge dismissed his claims."
