KKR miss Gautam Gambhir's aura, Shreyas Iyer's midas touch; surrender meekly

One of the biggest questions going into IPL 2025 was whether defending champions KKR could cope without their talisman
Gautam Gambhir
. The ex-India batter had resigned from his role as KKR's mentor to take on the responsibility of being the national team's head coach, throwing fans in a state of panic.
The Kolkata-based franchise had earlier struggled massively following Gambhir's exit as captain, reaching the playoffs only twice.
However, the ex-India batter's return as KKR's mentor in IPL 2024 transformed the franchise completely, converting them from an under-confident unit to one capable of beating the best. Unheralded players like Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora stepped up as the Kolkata-based franchise won the IPL for the first time since the 2014 season.

Gambhir's departure was further followed by the exit of KKR's IPL 2024 winning captain
Shreyas Iyer
, due to a disagreement over the retention sum. Losing such key figures in a short duration can be a stern challenge for the best which KKR soon realised. A paucity of proven candidates for the captain's role forced the franchise to attempt a left-field move by handing Ajinkya Rahane the captaincy.

KKR further assigned ex-West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo the massive responsibility of filling in Gambhir's shoes.
Who's that IPL player?
However, things certainly did not go in favour of the franchise despite Rahane attempting to encourage an aggressive approach. One of the biggest factors behind KKR's success in IPL 2024 was the focus on performing as a unit. However, the same simply went missing in IPL 2025. KKR recorded three wins in their opening seven matches, failing to step up even during the business end.
Two consecutive wins against DC and RR sparked hopes of a turnaround, which never transpired as the Rahane-led side ended their campaign with a 110-run loss against SRH.
One of the biggest factors behind KKR's dominance in IPL 2024 was the form of Sunil Narine, who smashed 488 runs at a strike rate of 180.74, chipping in with 17 wickets. However, Narine's performance suffered a sharp decline as he barely managed to score 246 runs, accounting for 12 dismissals.
KKR also badly missed the presence of opener Phil Salt, who'd scored 435 runs at a strike rate of 182.01 in IPL 2024, with the decision to pick Quinton de Kock failing miserably.
Ajinkya Rahane reflects on KKR's inconsistent IPL 2025, backs under-fire Venkatesh Iyer
Even the likes of Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh and
Venkatesh Iyer
had a forgettable campaign. Iyer was signed for Rs 23.75 crore in the auction, but finished with just 142 runs in 11 matches while Rinku accumulated 206 runs in 13 games. Ramandeep, who'd emerged as a reliable campaigner in IPL 2024, barely scored 47 runs in 11 matches.
Russell's reputation as a match-winner further suffered a hit after accumulating 167 runs in 13 games, with a duck in the final clash summing up his season.
Fans have also questioned head coach Chandrakant Pandit's inability to implement his philosophy in Gambhir's absence. While Vidarbha managed to pull off a win in the bleakest of situations under Pandit, the same certainly didn't reflect this season.
Poll
Will KKR be able to bounce back in IPL 2026?
Yes, they have potential
No, they need major changes
Maybe, depends on the strategy
Cannot predict
KKR's fortunes with the ball seemed reliant on Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, who was the joint top-wicket taker with 17 dismissals.
The franchise failed to find a suitable replacement for Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, with the likes of Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana proving quite expensive, recording economy rates of 10.11 and 10.18 respectively. Arora and Rana's lack of penetration with vital dismissals especially raised eyebrows, despite finishing their campaigns with 17 and 15 wickets respectively.
"There was a thrill factor that I miss.
Gambhir has an aura in the way he carries the team forward," revealed Rana, showcasing the India head coach's impact. KKR will definitely need to rethink their approach and may well rue their decision not to retain Shreyas, considering his success at PBKS, who've reached the playoffs.
"KKR have a lot of pieces to figure out. The fact that they've shelled out as much as they have for Venkatesh and not used him properly gives you a lot to think about. A lot of realigning needs to happen. There's been a lot of confusion," said JioStar expert Robin Uthappa, summing up the concerns plaguing the dethroned defending champions.

Kevin Durant responds sharply as fist fight rumors drag Phoenix Suns deeper into chaos
(Image Source - Getty Images) The Phoenix Suns are already under the spotlight for a lackluster season, but a new twist just added heat. DeMarcus Cousins dropped a claim about locker room fist fights—and Kevin Durant fired back without holding back. As trade rumors swirl and a franchise hits reset, this latest drama could reshape everything. Kevin Durant fires back after DeMarcus Cousins droping bombshell In the past few days, ex-NBA star DeMarcus Cousins made headlines by stating that the Phoenix Suns "had a couple of fist fights" in their locker room while on Run It Back. Cousins claimed that the rumors were rooted in insider knowledge, asserting that actual physical fights had taken place—and he noted that the toxicity "carries over to the court." Given that the franchise is already reeling from a poor 36–46 season and no playoff appearance, these claims only added fuel to the fire of speculation regarding deeper dysfunction. Kevin Durant wasn't having any of it. On June 20, 2025, he took to X to deliver a swift, cutting rebuttal — "I have to contest this 94-footer…we were trash this year ha ha ha but we NEVER got close to this. NEVER". Aside from the brawl, Phoenix is dealing with a lot of instability. The Suns racked up 46 losses, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020, and let go of head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one season. At the same time, the team's star trio—Kharlé Beal ($50.2M), Devin Booker ($49.2M), and Durant ($49.86M)—made up the highest-paid starting lineup in the NBA , but they couldn't even snag a play-in spot. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The outcome? Soaring expectations, fading patience, and heavy pressure on the future of the franchise. With the trade chatter ramping up—Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves are regular contenders—Durant's statements are gaining importance. As teams scramble for an edge, the star's public reaction to the rumors makes it clear: he's not going to stand for any fake drama. But this might only be the tip of the iceberg. Also Read: The Los Angeles Lakers took a risk on Luka Doncic and now the weight of that decision is starting to show Kevin Durant's strong public rejection of locker room brawls might not change the Suns' challenging season, but it clearly separates genuine problems from exaggerated gossip. As Phoenix starts fresh—with a new coach, a hefty payroll, and possible trade chaos—Durant has taken charge of the story. After finishing his 36‑46 season with straightforward honesty, the focus now turns to what lies ahead: rebuilding trust, team chemistry—and fingers crossed, victories. Nat'l-level boxer's daughter shines on basketball court
Ludhiana: For Pardeep Kaur, a national-level boxer who once dreamt of representing India internationally, watching her daughter shine in a global arena is a dream reborn. Her daughter, Tishmeet Kaur, is fulfilling that dream, not in the boxing ring, but on the basketball court. Tishmeet was a key player in India's Under-16 girls' basketball team that emerged victorious in the SABA qualifying zone held in the Maldives from June 12 to 15. India won all its matches in a dominant fashion, defeating Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. In the final, India again trounced Sri Lanka, winning by more than 50 points. What makes her achievement even more special is that Tishmeet was the only player from north India to make it to the national squad. Now, having helped India qualify for the final round of the Asian Basketball Championship (ABC), scheduled to be held in Malaysia this Sept, she is preparing to showcase her talent on the international stage. Pardeep Kaur, now a DPT physical education teacher at DAV School, Pakhowal Road, where Tishmeet is a Class XI student, shared, "I had played at the national level in boxing and told Tishmeet that she must go beyond that and achieve at the international level." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? Ex-India Stumper Surprised By Kuldeep Yadav's Omission From India's Playing XI
India opted for a pace-heavy attack with four quicks and a sole spinner in veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for the series opener at Headingley in Leeds. 'I would have liked Kuldeep Yadav to be in the playing XI. He is your trump card alongside (Jasprit) Bumrah. I would have picked him," Engineer told PTI on Friday, the first day of the opening Test. 'Since he is a quality bowler, England batters would find it difficult to play him. So, I would play him in all five games," he added. The 87-year-old, who featured in 46 Tests for India between 1961 and 1975, also supported new Test captain Shubman Gill, backing the 25-year-old to succeed despite his modest batting record in SENA countries. 'A few people have written Shubman off, saying he hasn't got runs in England or he can't get runs in England because of his technique, but I beg to disagree. He is a class player." He was particularly impressed with Gill's leadership during the 2025 IPL season, where the opener led Gujarat Titans to the Eliminator. 'Shubman has got this captaincy after the IPL. He captained his team pretty well in the IPL. I thought he showed calmness and made the right decisions—bowling changes and fielding changes. 'So, let's give him a chance and an opportunity because I think he'll do well. I have confidence that he's a level-headed young man and willing to listen to senior players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant the vice-captain, or certainly Jasprit Bumrah. So, I think he'll do well. Let's back him," he said. Engineer also lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struck a fluent 101 off 159 balls on the opening day, setting the tone for India in the series. 'Credit to Yashasvi Jaiswal for batting patiently despite a painful rib injury from a short ball. He played his shots correctly and batted superbly." Reflecting on England's bowling performance, the former cricketer felt India should exploit the home side's weak spin attack. 'England lack quality spinners. Young Bashir, despite a decent Test record, isn't great and can concede runs. Our batsmen excel against off-spin, so they'll capitalise on him," he said. Engineer added that while the retirement of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin has undeniably left a void in the Indian Test setup, it also paves the way for the next generation to step up. 'A player of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin's calibre will undoubtedly be missed, but this creates great opportunities for youngsters like Sai Sudharsan. 'I'm confident we'll see more of Sai in Test cricket, despite his unfortunate dismissal today," added Engineer, referring to the debutant's four-ball duck. Advertisement
