Mamata hits back: ‘PM using Operation Sindoor as poll plank to gain political mileage'
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks at a public meeting in Alipurduar, claiming that he is looking to gain 'political mileage' out of Operation Sindoor and 'using it as an election campaign plank' in the state.
Earlier in the day, during his visit, the PM laid the foundation stone for an Rs 1,010-crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts and also addressed a public rally.
Addressing a press conference, Banerjee highlighted that the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack and killed 25 tourists are yet to be nabbed,
'Why are the terrorists who killed tourists in Pahalgam yet to be caught? When America says something, in one second you are silent (referring to US President Donald Trump's claim that he mediated for a ceasefire between India and Pakistan recently). We know everything. Just for publicity or to promote someone's image, one should not say ill about others,' the CM said.
Pointing out that this is not the time for an 'election campaign' she claimed, 'They (Centre) gave the name Operation Sindoor to get political mileage. Now, the representatives of all political parties, even the Opposition, are busy highlighting India's stand to foreign countries. We are standing for national interest. Is this the time for the Prime Minister to take political mileage? This is not the time for an election campaign. We are shocked and saddened.'
'He (Modi) is here to sell Sindoor. This is an insult to women. In front of him, BJP leaders (an apparent reference to Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari's remarks at the Alipurduar public meeting) are saying that on the lines of Operation Sindoor, there will be operation Bengal. We are ready for polls (Assembly polls are scheduled to be held next year). I challenge them, if they have the guts go to the polls tomorrow, we are ready. Bengal is ready,' Mamata Banerjee claimed.
'A barrage of lies (Modi's allegations during his speech) by him. He is trying to sell Sindoor. Remember Sindoor is the respect of nuggets and sisters of this country and Bengal. Do not insult them. This is so unbecoming of Modiji,' the CM alleged.
She also emphasised the Trinamool Congress's full support following the Pahalgam terror attack and the nation's response to Pakistan, also highlighting that party MP Abhishek Banerjee is part of the national delegation overseas.
As part of its efforts to rally global support for India's fight against terror emanating from Pakistan and moving to isolate Islamabad internationally, the government recently announced seven multi-party delegations, who would visit different countries to convey India's message post the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
Addressing her absence from a recent Niti Aayog meeting chaired by PM Modi, Banerjee claimed, 'Last time when I was there, after four minutes I was not allowed to speak. Other CMs got 10 minutes. If I am not allowed to speak, why would I go there? To have lunch?'
The chief minister also challenged PM Modi to a public debate on television to address the issues such as 'corruption.'
'I challenge you. If you can sit for a debate on TV, I am ready to reply to you,' Banerjee said, also claiming, 'If there is corruption here (in Bengal), the state government takes action.'
'The job loss of teachers in Bengal.. The issue was highlighted because BJP and others went to court. We are a humane government. We are trying to provide relief to the teachers while adhering to court directives,' she said.
Banerjee also highlighted that the state's dues from the Centre amount to Rs 1, 75,000 crore.

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar has landed into a controversy for a remark directed at sex workers in Kolkata's Sonagachi area. The Trinamool Congress on Saturday (June 21, 2025) criticised Mr. Majumdar's remarks and demanded an 'unconditional apology' from the BJP leader. West Bengal Minister Sashi Panja said that though Sukanta Majumdar claims to be a teacher, but his remarks are 'very disgusting, very disparaging and very disgraceful'. 'He has said that the law and order situation or the law in Bengal can be equated to Songachi sex workers. This is so humiliating to Sonagachi sex workers and we stand by them.' Former Corporators Ramp Up Public Outreach In Build-Up To Civic Polls
1 2 3 Nagpur: With civic election procedures gaining momentum, former corporators across the city have become increasingly active in reconnecting with their wards and addressing unresolved civic issues, filling the vacuum created by over three years under the civic administration. Already, the senior rung of leaders in the BJP camp, including CM Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and even guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, have started holding Janta Darbars. In Prabhag 26, senior BJP leader and former corporator Dharmapal Meshram recently conducted a detailed review of persistent civic problems. Acting on a slew of complaints from residents, particularly dysfunctional street lights and domestic electricity issues, Meshram held meetings with officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Meshram called a joint meeting involving Mahavitaran officials, party workers, and citizens to address household power issues. He also instructed the electrical department to immediately repair defunct street lights and install new ones where necessary to restore street illumination in the area. Meshram is not alone. Vijay aka Pintu Zalke, another former corporator, has also intensified his public outreach. Like others, he has been trying to fill the political void left by the dissolution of the NMC's general body in March 2022 which led to bureaucratic governance without elected representation. With polls likely in the coming months, Zalke and others have begun directly engaging with citizens, addressing grievances, and reviving their grassroots presence. Former BJP city chief Jitendra Kukde, too, has returned to active fieldwork in his former ward. "As I was busy with both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections after being appointed city president, I missed regular interactions with people of my Prabhag," said Kukde, who was later replaced by Dayashankar Tiwari. Now out of party office, Kukde is back on the ground, attempting to rebuild his image and rapport with voters. Several ex-corporators have also reopened their contact offices to directly receive complaints. Former women corporators from opposition camps like Sneha Nikose and Shakshi Raut have become proactive, addressing issues like sewer blockages, irregular garbage collection, low water pressure, and damaged public infrastructure. These efforts come as citizens grow increasingly frustrated with the lukewarm response of the civic officials. With many wards still plagued by basic issues — ranging from faulty street lights and choked drains to uncollected garbage — former corporators are leveraging this discontent to re-establish their political relevance. The surge in activity suggests that while the municipal body remains under administrative control, the unofficial race for the civic body's 151 seats has already begun on the ground.

Cost of Shambhu border protest: Farm group Kisan Mazdoor Morcha got 20.6L for 13-month stir, left with Rs 1,734
Bathinda: Farmer forum Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) on Saturday released details of the donations it received and the expenses it made during the 13-month-long protest helmed by the farmers' body at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana from Feb 13, 2024, to Mar 19 this year. The protest, along with another stir helmed by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) at Khanauri border between the two states, was carried out to demand a legal right for farmers on the minimum support price (MSP) for their crops, calculated for a 50% profit over comprehensive cost. KMM claimed that it received Rs 20,58,254 over the 13 months and spent Rs 20,56,520, leaving it with cash at hand of Rs 1,734. KMM also released a month-wise account of the funds for the period from Feb 2024 to Mar 2025. According to details, KMM received the highest amount in donations in May 2024, getting Rs 6,53,650. The lowest collection was made in Jan 2025, with the group getting just Rs 39,095 for the entire month. The highest expenditure was incurred in April and May 2024, when over Rs 5 lakh each were spent. Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) is yet to release the details of its accounts. The group headed by Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who went on a hunger strike for MSP, said it will make public its accounts on June 25. KMM accounts committee member Guramneet Singh Mangat said they audited their accounts in April, but a couple of receipt books went missing when police forcibly demolished the morcha site on March 19. "We had to find those receipts and then audit the accounts. This is why the process was delayed," he said. SKM (Non-Political) functionary Abhimanyu Kohar said both forums met on June 19, where accounts from both sides were shared. "We are busy with some engagements and the accounts will be put in the public domain on June 25," he said. The collection of funds was mired in controversy even during the previous 2020-21 farmers' protest on the borders of Delhi, as certain leaders alleged misappropriation of funds.
