Where Oregon Ducks' Dante Moore ranks among Josh Pate's top QBs in Big Ten for 2025 season
It hasn't been set in stone quite yet who the Oregon Ducks' starting quarterback will be in Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, as both Dante Moore and Austin Novosad continue to battle it out over the offseason and compete to see who the successor to Dillon Gabriel will end up being.
The national perception, though, is that Moore will take over as the starter, being the player with more experience on the field and a higher profile as a former 5-star recruit coming into the position battle.
Whichever player ends up winning the job will have some big shoes to fill, but there is a lot of confidence that their passer can get the job done and return Oregon to the prominence that they saw a year ago, winning the Big Ten Championship and going into the College Football Playoff as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
This past week, notable CBS Sports analyst Josh Pate released his power rankings of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten, and he had Moore near the top of the list.
It comes as no shock to see Allar at the top of the list, and with Sayin and Moore at No. 2 and No. 3, it's hard to argue. Where things get a bit interesting is at the No. 4 position, where Williams is getting a lot of love from Washington, and further down the list, where Michigan's true freshman QB is ranked ahead of the likes of Mendoza and Iamaleava.
As for Moore, there is a lot of hype in Eugene about what he can do this year with the Ducks. A number of players on the team, from former Duck Tez Johnson to current Duck Dakorien Moore, have propped him up as a Heisman Trophy contender in 2025, and there's a hope that he unlocks a level of Oregon's offense under Will Stein that we didn't see with Gabriel under center.
He's got to beat out Novosad for the job before any of this can come to fruition, but should that happen, there's a strong sense of confidence in Eugene.

Oregon Football QB target Bryson Beaver named biggest stock-riser at Elite 11 Finals
The Oregon Ducks are working hard in the recruiting world when it comes to the quarterback position, pushing hard on a pair of prospects in the 2026 class: 5-star Ryder Lyons and 4-star Bryson Beaver. The former is a highly-touted prospect who the Ducks are going to have to try hard to win away from the BYU Cougars when he announces his commitment in a few days. However, Oregon got in early on the latter with an offer before his recruitment started to take off a couple of weeks ago, and it appears that it is paying off. Beaver participated in the Elite 11 Finals this past week down in Los Angeles and was named the No. 3 performer in what is being described as one of the best crops of QBs the camp has seen in quite some time. On top of that, On3 has now declared that Beaver is the biggest stock-riser from the bunch, with the distinction of "strongest arm" coming out of the camp. "Beaver looked like one of the more talented prospects on hand," On3's Charles Power writes. "We felt his arm took a backseat to nobody in attendance. The Southern California native has explosive arm power that effortlessly delivers from multiple slots and platforms. ... Currently a four-star prospect for On3, Beaver is primed to debut inside the inaugural Rivals300 ranking in July." It's been quite an eventful two weeks for Beaver in the recruiting world. Rated a three-star commit to the Boise State Broncos over a week ago, Beaver has since seen his rating rise to a four-star after being offered by the Ducks. He has taken a couple of visits to SEC schools after receiving offers from the Ole Miss Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide. He is also in Eugene this weekend for an official visit, and is now predicted to land with the Ducks according to a new Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports' Blair Angulo. The Ducks are also hosting 4-star QB Matt Ponatoski on a visit this weekend, with the expectation that they likely will be getting a commitment from one of them. At the moment, there is a belief that Ponatoski could get selected in the MLB draft as a top high school prospect this summer, which might lead to him never taking a snap in college football. That may lead to the Ducks prioritizing Beaver, who is among the fastest-rising QB prospects in the nation. 2026 five-star athlete snubs Penn State, Oregon for SEC
For Penn State and Oregon, landing a player of Brandon Arrington's stature would have paid dividends. For the Nittany Lions, it would have been their first five-star recruit in their 7th-ranked 2026 class. For Oregon, it would have been their second and a testament to DC Tosh Lupoi's recruiting along the defense. However, it is not meant to be for both teams, as the No. 1 overall athlete and 10th overall recruit decide to take his talents to College Station and the Aggies. Arrington had recently visited Oregon on June 6 and Penn State earlier in the month. The most shocking aspect of this commitment is that he didn't visit the Aggies officially at all. In fact, he was supposed to have his visit on June 20th, with his commitment to come in early July. However, Arrington decide to move up his commitment date to the 19th, something which could not have been foreseen by either Penn State nor Oregon. Seemingly, his mind was made up long ago. With this commitment for the Aggies, it sees them become the No. 2 ranked class in the nation and sees Mike Elko establish himself as one of the elite recruiters in college football. However, the loss of Arrington for both Big Ten programs stings, especially for Penn State. At the very least, Oregon have a five-star in the building despite their 33rd overall rank and 10th overall Big Ten rank in the 2026 cycle. For Penn State, no matter the fact they have the 7th-ranked class, this is a big loss for a program looking to make a statement. With Arrington, Penn State could point to him as a symbol of their continued success. Now, they're left to pick up the pieces of what could have been. Immanuel Iheanacho, the No. 1 corner in the class, is now their only hope. Penn State must act swiftly if they don't want to strike out yet again. Court rules Reggie Bush must pay Lloyd Lake $1.4 million in defamation lawsuit
On Friday, a judge ruled in favor of sports agent Lloyd Lake in a defamation lawsuit against former USC star running back Reggie Bush. Per the judge's ruling, Bush must pay Lake $1.4 million. Lake, of course, was the agent at the center of Bush's improper benefits scandal that lives in USC infamy. As a result of the scandal, the Trojans were handed a two-year postseason ban and lost 30 scholarships over the course of three seasons. Following the news, Los Angeles Times USC beat writer Ryan Kartje offered more details: 'Lake filed the suit against Bush back in February 2023 — along with his parents, Roy and Barbara Gunner — alleging that Bush publicly disparaged and defamed him during a podcast appearance and in social media posts and, as such, violated the non-disparagement clause they agreed upon in a previous settlement,' Kartje wrote. 'The comments, according to Lake and his parents' complaint, 'created a firestorm of vitriol' that saw the Gunner home vandalized with graffiti and left them fearing for their safety. 'The judge's decision this week came more than 15 years after the first explosive lawsuit between the two men was settled. That suit, which Lake first filed in 2007, claimed that he and another businessman, Michael Michaels, had provided Bush and his family with cash, a car, rent-free use of a house and other gifts while he played at USC in 2004 and 2005 with the expectation Bush would sign with Lake and his fledgling sports management company, New Era Sports & Entertainment. The first case was settled in April 2010, just before Bush and Michaels were scheduled to be deposed. But Lake's account of their arrangement, which violated NCAA rules, had already prompted a firestorm, one that ultimately ended in severe sanctions for USC's football program, the vacating of the Trojans' 2004 national title and the return of Bush's Heisman Trophy.' Somehow, there is still new news in this case more than 15 years after USC received its original NCAA sanctions, and nearly 20 years after Bush last suited up for the Trojans. USC fans are certainly hoping that this ruling can bring closure, and that all parties can finally put the scandal behind them.
