Governor of Goa PS Sreedharan Pillai leads yoga session in Panaji to mark 11th International Yoga Day
Panaji (Goa) [India], June 21 (ANI): Governor of Goa, PS Sreedharan Pillai, on Saturday led a yoga session at the Old Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan in Panaji to mark the 11th International Yoga Day. The officials and staff members of Raj Bhavan, Goa, performed Yoga at Raj Bhavan.
Sanjeev Gauns Desai, Secretary to the Governor, also participated in the yoga session.
The International Yoga Day is being celebrated every year across the globe on June 21 since last eleven years to create awareness about its vast potential in improving overall health and well-being. It also promotes the practice of yoga for physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing worldwide.
The participants of yoga were guided by Dhananjay Patil an experienced yoga instructor attached to Tapobhumi, Kundaim.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed happiness over the global enthusiasm for the 11th International Day of Yoga, noting that people from all walks of life participated in the celebrations.
Sharing glimpses from the event held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the Prime Minister said the day highlighted how yoga 'unites' the world.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, 'Yoga unites the world! Glad to see immense enthusiasm all across the planet for International Day of Yoga.'

Meanwhile, in Gujarat's Vadnagar, a total of 2,121 people made a Guinness World Record when they held the Cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds.
According to Richard Stunning, official adjudicator at Guinness World Records, a record with a title for the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga began on Saturday. The minimum number of participants for the record was 250; they had to hold the Yoga Cobra pose for at least a minute.
A total of 2,184 participants breached the one-minute timeline; they ended up holding the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds. The Guinness World Records discounted 64 participants, after which 2,121 participants held the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds to clinch the Guinness World Record.
'The Guinness World Records title that starts today is the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga, simultaneously. We set a guideline that everyone had to do it for at least a minute each, and we set a minimum target of 250 participants. Today, they did it for more than a minute, they did it for two minutes and nine seconds, and the total was 2185. We had to discount 64 participants. So the confirmed title is 2,121 participants. Given we set a minimum of 250, this is smashing the Guinness World Record. Congratulations to everyone involved, and it's a fantastic achievement,' Richard Stunning told ANI. (ANI)

60-day river yoga floats dual message of wellness & cleanliness
Lucknow: The 60-day River Yoga campaign, blending wellness and environmental action, concluded with a mass yoga demonstration at Kudiya Ghat on International Yoga Day on Saturday. The campaign was led by the Gomti Task Force (137 Composite Ecological Task Force Battalion, Territorial Army), in collaboration with the State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG-UP), Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), and the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC). The drive brought together students, civil society members, and volunteers for daily yoga sessions and riverbank clean-up campaigns. The concluding event, which drew over 300 participants, featured a mass yoga demonstration, an exhibition summarising the 60-day campaign, and felicitation of key contributors. Attendees included Rajya Sabha members Dinesh Sharma, former minister Mohsin Raza, Prof Venkatesh Dutta from BBAU, civic officials, and representatives from the army. "We completed 60 days of continuous clean-up and yoga on the banks of Gomti. The campaign has led to the approval of several eco-measures, such as a dedicated budget in the Lucknow Municipal Corporation for a trash skimmer, and the start of continuous monitoring of STPs and drains," said Prof Venkatesh Dutta, who added that the initiative was a model of civil-military-academic collaboration, promoting a people-led approach to environmental restoration and river rejuvenation. Launched on April 21, the campaign operated daily from 6-8am across five major ghats — Kudiya, Mankameshwar, Jhulelal, Gau, and Chhath. Each session began with guided yoga led by certified instructors and was followed by clean-up activities involving NCC/NSS cadets, local NGOs, and residents. Weekly themes such as "plastic-free ghats" and "mindfulness by the river" emphasized the connection between personal well-being and ecological responsibility. The initiative resulted in several civic outcomes, including continuous monitoring of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and drains flowing into the Gomti.

HC: Husband's consent not needed for passport
A woman does not need her husband's consent and signature to apply for a passport and insisting on the same is an instance of 'male supremacism', the Madras high court has said disposing of a petition filed by a woman who sought directions to authorities to issue her a fresh passport. (ANI Photo) (ANI) Saying that the insistence by the Regional Passport Office (RPO) that the woman get her estranged husband's permission for issuance of a passport was 'shocking', the bench of justice N Anand Venkatesh said it shows the 'mindset of the society in treating woman who are married as if they are chattel belonging to the husband'. The woman, Revathy, moved the court saying that she applied for a passport in April, but her application was not processed and the petitioner was informed that she must obtain the signature of her husband in Form-J and only thereafter, the application will be processed by the Chennai RPO. The petitioner got married in 2023 and there was a matrimonial dispute between the parties which resulted in her husband filing a petition before a local court, seeking for the dissolution of the marriage. This petition was pending. The RPO also took the pending dispute into consideration, following which she filed the present petition. In his order, the judge said that in the considered view of this court, the application submitted by the petitioner seeking a passport has to be processed independently. 'It is not necessary for a wife to get the permission of her husband and take his signature before applying for a passport before the authority,' the judge said in the June 18 order. 'This insistence made by the 2nd respondent (the RPO) shows the mindset of the society in treating woman who are married as if they are chattel belonging to the husband. It is quite shocking that the passport office is insisting for the permission of the husband and his signature in a particular form in order to process the application submitted by the petitioner for passport,' the court said. The judge said the petitioner after marriage does not lose her individuality and a wife can always apply for a passport without the permission or signature of the husband in any form. 'It is quite shocking that the passport office is insisting for the permission of the husband and his signature in a particular form in order to process the application submitted by the petitioner for passport,' the court said. It noted that it was not possible for the petitioner woman to obtain her husband's signature on the application in view of the strained relationship between them, the judge said, the RPO was insisting the woman 'fulfill an impossibility'. 'The practice of insisting for permission from the husband to apply for passport, does not augur well for a society which is moving towards emancipation. This practice is nothing short of male supremacism,' the court said. The judge directed the RPO to process the application submitted by the petitioner and issue a passport in her name on her satisfying the other requirements. This process shall be completed within four weeks, the judge added.
