Extract public commitment from Modi on continuing VSP in the public sector, CPI(M) tells Naidu, Pawan

A day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Visakhapatnam to participate in the International Day of Yoga celebrations on Saturday (June 21), the CPI(M) on Friday demanded that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan secure a clear public commitment from him that the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) would remain in the public sector. Addressing the media in Vijayawada, party State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao expressed concern over the uncertain future of the steel plant, citing widespread fears over privatisation. The lion's share of the ₹11,400 crore revival package allocated by the Union government was used to repay debts and taxes and the remaining for operational needs such as salaries, machinery, and raw materials, he said. 'The package is an illusion meant to mislead the people. Thousands of employees have already lost their jobs, and now the plant faces the threat of privatisation. The BJP, the TDP, and the JSP have all misled the people in the name of a revival package. The recent allocation of mines and port access to the Mittal Group indicates backdoor privatisation efforts,' Mr. Srinivasa Rao said. He also criticised the government's expenditure of ₹70 crore on yoga promotion programmes, calling it wasteful at a time when basic needs like food, shelter, and employment remained unaddressed. 'Millions already practice yoga individually. What people need is not mass yoga shows, but job security and livelihood support,' he said, adding that the funds should have been spent on improving children's nutrition. Mr. Srinivasa Rao also raised doubts about the authenticity of the government's claim that two crore people had registered themselves for the yoga programme. 'The registrations are largely bogus. Even my name has been listed without consent. This is all done to chase a Guinness record,' he alleged, presenting documents to support his claim. Party Central Committee member D. Rama Devi condemned the recent incident in Kuppam where a woman had reportedly been tied to a tree and beaten by a moneylender. 'This is the reality of women empowerment under this government,' she said.

Yoga as a mass campaign to build a healthier India

India, the birthplace of yoga, continues to uphold this ancient wisdom, not just as physical exercises but as a holistic philosophy for the nurturing of the human mind, body, and spirit. The phrase from the Bhagavad Gita, yogah karmasu kaushalam (yoga is skill in action), points to yoga's transformative potential, particularly in empowering women and nurturing children. Yoga has gained global recognition as a channel for wellness and social transformation. The UN's 2014 decision to declare June 21 as International Day of Yoga was the world's recognition of India's great spiritual and civilisational heritage. Yoga must be seen not just as a practice, but as a participatory movement — a jan andolan for health and wellness. (AP) This year's Yoga Day theme is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. As the nation marches towards Viksit Bharat, it is necessary to integrate yoga into the lives of women and children, who constitute two-thirds of the country's population and are more vulnerable and exposed to health issues than other sections. From improving mental health and hormonal balance to strengthening the muscular and skeletal system, yoga is uniquely suited to meet the health needs of women across age groups. Adopting yoga before and after pregnancy empowers women to effectively manage related health challenges. Prenatal yoga, with its targeted postures and meditative techniques, alleviates pregnancy discomforts, supports pain management, and boosts energy. It prepares expectant mothers for childbirth physically and emotionally. Postnatal yoga helps lactating mothers in their recovery, emotional well-being, enhancing breastfeeding, and strengthening the mother-child bond. We have leveraged the network of over 25 lakh anganwadi workers to inform, educate, and assist women and children in adopting yoga as a necessary habit in their daily lives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has constantly advocated for women-led development. The World Bank also argued that increased female labour force participation can boost the manufacturing output by 9% and help us achieve a high-income developed nation status by 2047. All this can only be achieved when we have a physically and emotionally healthy women workforce. Coming to children, lifestyle disorders, screen dependence, and academic pressures have all become major health afflictions. Yoga offers a response to these challenges, by enhancing concentration, memory, emotional regulation, sleep quality, and stress management. Through Mission Saksham, Anganwadi, and Poshan 2.0, my ministry is embedding yoga into early childhood care and development, laying the foundation for lifelong wellness habits. The ministry houses various flagship programmes and schemes for the well-being, health, and nutrient intake of women and children. While delivering these benefits, anganwadi centres, one-stop centres, and child care institutions, among others, educate, influence, and facilitate beneficiaries in including specially designed yoga modules in their lives. From IT to space and from policymaking to strategic defence, women are the new frontline warriors. Hence, women must keep working towards unlocking their potential, with yoga playing a key role. By actively incorporating yoga into our women and child welfare policies, we are asserting our cultural sovereignty while simultaneously enhancing grassroots health and well-being. Yoga must be seen not just as a practice, but as a participatory movement — a jan andolan for health and wellness. Let us unite in embracing yoga as a social and personal commitment to build a healthier India and reach new heights. Annpurna Devi is Union minister of women and child development. The views expressed are personal.

India To Organise Yoga Day Events In 191 Countries Tomorrow

India will organise thematic events and programmes in 1,300 cities across the globe to mark the International Day of Yoga on Saturday, showcasing the nation's ancient tradition and soft power. The Indian High Commission in Pakistan is also organising a yoga event in Islamabad on the occasion, according to a statement issued on Friday by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the cultural arm of the Ministry of External Affairs. "On the 10th anniversary of International Day of Yoga, we will practically cover every country in the world where yoga events are being organised. In some countries like the US, we are hosting multiple events across various cities," ICCR's Director General, K Nandini Singla, was quoted as saying in a statement. The ICCR will organise various yoga events and programmes in 191 countries on June 21 to mark the IDY, with more than 2,000 events to be hosted at 1,300 locations, covering multiple cities in various nations, it said. Additionally, the ICCR is also hosting 'Yoga Bandhan', a signature event of IDY 2025, where 17 yoga gurus and practitioners from 15 countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Russia, China, South Africa, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea, will lead the Yoga Day events across India, Singla said. In Delhi, yoga events will be led by these foreign yoga gurus at Jantar Mantar, Qutub Minar, Purana Quila and Humayun's Tomb, while similar 'Yoga Bandhan' programmes will be organised at iconic locations in Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bhopal, Gwalior and other cities, she added. Just as yoga is a 'union' between ' Atma' and 'Paramatma', 'Yoga Bandhan' seeks to "unite India and the world', the ICCR's DG said. "It is a matter of great satisfaction that yoga has come full circle. Yoga went from India to these countries. People abroad learnt yoga, and today they have come back to India to lead yoga demonstrations by Indian people in India," Singla added. The theme for IDY 2025 is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. This theme echoes a vital truth about the interconnectedness of health, sustainability, and the environment, aligning with India's "One Earth, One Family, One Future" vision highlighted during its G20 presidency, the ICCR underlined. The ICCR DG noted that preparations for IDY- 2025 started several months ago. "To create awareness about IDY, we did various programmes to mark the 100-day countdown, 75-day countdown, 50-day countdown and 25-day countdown events. Globally, our embassies and consulates hosted special yoga events in the run-up to the IDY," she said. India's 37 cultural centres in different countries also organised numerous yoga programmes during the last 100 days, Singla added. Regarding yoga's popularity in foreign countries, she said, "prominent personalities like MPs, legislators, police officers and judges are also learning yoga abroad". Many people in foreign countries are adopting yoga in their daily lives to stay healthy and beat stress, Singla said, adding that yoga has "truly become a global movement".
